I fell in love with Catholic mysticism through reading the life of this Saint. She inspires a spirituality of the Cross.

"Think a moment! May not a man become so absorbed in a beautiful book as to be unconscious of aught else? But if he converse with God Himself, the Source of all beauty, how is it possible for him not to be wholly lost in Him?"

Finished some spiritual reading during this time of Lent. Though a lot of it was the voice of the interpreter, I enjoyed reading and contemplating Anne Catherine Emmerich's own words and experience. The German mystic stigmatist was born in the midst of French Revolutionary shifts that swept over the continent, which targeted Christian faith and perhaps especially (and not entirely without reason) the Catholic Church. She was beatified by Pope John Paull II in 2004, which begs the question of ulterior motives, when the Catholic Church basically rejects her supporter Brentano's books about her. (Speaking of John Paull II: 'The Vatican Girl' documentary, in which he figures, is a disturbing must-watch.) In that same year, Mel Gibson released The Passion of the Christ, which also used 'The Dolorous Passion' book by Brentano based on her experience. Obviously, we're also all waiting for his upcoming sequel, Resurrection :)+

Overall I find her case to be a humbling reminder of self-effacing service to Jesus. Eventually I'll get to the second volume, but until then, the first 600 pages will sustain me for a while.

I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me
