Richard Anthony "Cheech" Marin is an American comedian and actor who gained recognition as part of the comedy act Cheech & Chong during the 1970s and early 1980s, and as Don Johnson's quick-and-scheme partner, Insp. Joe Dominguez on Nash Bridges.
Would you trust a bus load of school kids to Cheech Marin, formerly one half of Cheech and Chong, the comedy duo notorious for turning their drug problems into comedy, or comedy into their drug problems! Weeeelllll, seems we have no choice in the matter. This kids book (and yes Cheech writes kids books so he's no different from other kids authors with drug related issues, like say, Lewis Carroll!) has our favorite Mexican from East LA driving kids to a battle of the bands. The purpose: to prove that mariachi music beats rock and roll! Only in fiction, though, is it ever possible for the Macarena to drown out, say, Metallica with Enter Sandman. Of course other bands in this contest are louder and no one hears from the noise. So it's up to Cheech the Mr Miyagi of music to inspire confidence in the kids to get onstage and play the mariachi music and soon, the audience is silent as they play, everybody listens, everybody enjoys, and nobody is aware of the real world, where in America people could care less about Latin mariachi music, unless it's got names like Julio, Enrique, JLo, Marc Anthony, or Los Lobos, or God help us Ricky Martin! As I have said, only in fiction, and only in the mind of Cheech Marin, is this "greatest hit" (LoL) possible. Three stars Cheech a bad preach, but at least he can still roll out some good ones!! (Oops!)
Meh. The title is very misleading. The story is not about being a bus driver but about a group of children entering a battle of the bands as a Mariachi band.
Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong tries writing a picture book story. It isn't bad, but it isn't spectacular. As a school bus driver, Cheech leads the kids of his school as they take their mariachi band to compete in a rock competition. In the unlikely way of most kids books, the mariachi band beets out all of the rock bands.
The pictures are bright and fun with a lot of them devoted to head shots of cheech's animated character looking shocked.
This is a fun book that emphasizes being true to yourself, despite what's popular. This moralistic tale isn't too heavy handed, and the various bands highlighted at the battle of the bands are very funny. Our girls enjoyed this book and I enjoyed seeing something from Cheech Marin that was G-rated. My memories of him are pretty "hazy."
I was worried when I saw this! the librarian assured me it was a good read, I agree! cheech stays true to his roots of being scatter brained- parents may get a kick out of it.
The story isn't the most thrilling thing ever, but I do find it hilarious that Cheech Marin wrote a kiddie book. I do like the band that dressed up like spiders.
