Terry Brooks was born in Illinois in 1944, where he spent a great deal of his childhood and early adulthood dreaming up stories in and around Sinnissippi Park, the very same park that would eventually become the setting for his bestselling Word & Void trilogy. He went to college and received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College, where he majored in English Literature, and he received his graduate degree from the School of Law at Washington & Lee University. A writer since high school, he wrote many stories within the genres of science fiction, western, fiction, and non-fiction, until one semester early in his college years he was given The Lord of the Rings to read. That moment changed Terry's life forever, because in Tolkien's great work he found all the elements needed to fully explore his writing combined in one genre. He then wrote The Sword of Shannara, the seven year grand result retaining sanity while studying at Washington & Lee University and practicing law. It became the first work of fiction ever to appear on the New York Times trade paperback bestseller list, where it remained for over five months.
What is interesting about The Druids Keep is that it appears to be a money grab by someone... If one goes to Wikipedia, one will find that the original Sword of Shannara was published as a single 726 page book in 1977. The Sword of Shannara book I reviewed recently, was apparently only Part 1 of the original publication. The Druid's Keep is thus Part 2 of the original Sword of Shannara book, which itself was the first book in a trilogy. Dividing it into parts means that I need to pay $7 per ebook, when I could go out and find a single, secondhand paperback for half that price... The other downside is that I now may be on the hook to read a long fantasy saga, which, while I do enjoy, I was trying to avoid.
Well, what about this book? Overall, I find that things are picking up in Part 2. The narrative rythym is starting to resonate, the story is getting more interesting, and individual characters are starting to have their own unique personalities. My biggest complaint this time around would be the several examples of dumbfoundingly oblivious characters and poorly conceived plans.
It will be a little while before I plung into the exciting conclusion of the Sword of Shanarra. I'll hold off my final thoughts until then. For now, I highly recommend finding the old, single volume book, or buying all three together as a single ebook.
The Druids' Keep is a solid continuation of the Sword of Shannara series, diving deeper into the world Brooks has built with captivating detail and lore. The pacing picks up where the first book left off, and the story unfolds with a good balance of action, character growth, and intriguing mysteries.
Brooks excels in world-building, as always, with vivid descriptions that transport you into a rich, well-crafted setting. The characters evolve in this book, and I appreciated the complexity added to their motivations and relationships. While there are still moments where the plot feels a little predictable, the book has enough twists and emotional depth to keep you engaged.
The stakes feel higher, and there’s a noticeable improvement in the pacing compared to the first book, which makes the read more thrilling. Fans of epic fantasy with classic good vs. evil themes will find a lot to enjoy here.
Overall, The Druids' Keep is an excellent addition to the series and a rewarding read for those invested in the world of Shannara. It’s not without its flaws, but it’s a compelling and enjoyable fantasy tale that builds well on the foundation set by the first book.
If you are a reader who loves fantasy and have not read the Sword of Shannara series you are missing out. Terry Brooks is an amazing writer. I learned to love reading and writing by reading books like this. I read this when I was 10 years old and loved it. I still find it a fantastic read today!
