This is an origami reference book like no other. I first found it at the Carnegie library in Pittsburgh and later finally acquired a copy of my own. If you really want to learn history of origami and mathematical principles and examples of kirigami and connected forms, this book is for you. It opens up the world of concepts in origami like none other in my massive collection of origami books.
Hey, parents out there - I have this paperback book for years. I am Japanese American and wanted to see the artists that makes the paper art style with my Japanese mother, I bought the book in 1980's a beautifully written and drawn origami makes this book perfectly for kids too. Go buy this book NOW!
The book documents traditional and historic models, such as costume folds, the octopus, and the crab, which involve using scissors. Compound folds, such as the yako-san (manservant) require glue to stick together. There are many original models shown, and no hesitancy in using these tools is present, as the book predates the modern development of means of locking paper and new bases to engineer more points (e.g. for more legs) from the square.
However, the modern purist will also find many figures that are folded from a single uncut square, and there is no need to use methylcellulose, a compass, or foil-backed tissue paper to produce a good result.
The diagrams are clear and easy to follow, and I find the book to be a useful source for simple and intermediate models.
Well it took me a long time to find the non-abridged version of this book… I have very found memories of this book from my childhood, and it has the best model of a pig ever.
So, I'm thrilled to have located a copy of the non-abridged version of this book and would recommend it highly for those interested in kirigami (there is some cutting in some of the models). And the pig still rocks.
Author is excellent and the book is diverse. Lots of great models, clear instructions and a good range of skills.
Good for a novice looking to be challenged for time to come. Some of the best animal models I have seen. I need to buy it again so I can finally manage to make the dog in the doghouse model (1 sheet creates the house and protruding dog...)
I've grown up with this book and just about worn it out. Many of the models in this book I've commited to memory several times over. It makes a great primer!
