Winterglass & Thorne #2

The Golden Griffin Job

Rate this book
When a glamorous socialite is found dead at her breakfast table, police detective Freya Winterglass is delighted to be assigned the case, even if it’s only because of her personal connection to the Gentry. But when the chief suspect turns out to be a svartalf, simmering tensions between the light and dark elves begin to boil over. Unless Freya can prove him innocent, more lives could be lost and her beloved city plunged into civil war.

Gentleman jewel thief Lucian Thorne has been lying low for a while, but he cannot stay away from the charming detective inspector forever, even if she knows far too much about him for comfort. While she is distracted by the murder case, he and his friends plan to steal a solid gold statuette of a griffin, currently on display at the city museum—but they’re not the only thieves with their eyes on this particular prize.

Neither Freya nor Lucian is prepared for the tangle of family secrets, ancient feuds and long-forgotten crimes that their activities will uncover, but a shared problem can only bring them closer together. Can’t it?

About the author

Anne Lyle

Anne Lyle grew up a longbow-shot from Sherwood Forest, and has been obsessed by history, folklore, and swashbuckling heroes ever since. Apart from her first love, fantasy, she also enjoys historical fiction and mysteries, so it was inevitable that her own books would combine all three. They also feature LGBTQ characters, strong language, slow burn romance and rogues with a heart of gold—or at least tarnished silver.

She does most of her writing in a small home office crammed with books, fountain pens, abandoned cups of tea, tarot decks, candles and all the electronic impedimenta of the modern fantasy author. Her hobbies include watercolour painting, gardening, and trying to teach her cats to communicate using talking buttons. She's rather glad she didn't live hundreds of years ago, as she would probably have been burned as a witch by now!

I have to admit that the first book in this series was a little confusing for a long while, but I was very positively surprised when the author brought everything together by the end of the book and connected each and every storyline and scene. I was therefore really excited to dive into this sequel and I was really happy that BookSirens notified me that I could grab an arc for this second book via their website.

In this book it's clear from the start how the two cases, the robbery Lucian is involved in and the murder-case Freya is trying to solve, are connected. However, it was in no way predictable how eventually the two storylines would come together and how Freya and Lucian need each other to get out of the situation they're in. I loved how their paths kept on crossing and how this case really helped to deepen their relationship.

I also love the world this series is taking place in. Although we're spending most of our time in one town we do know that the world is incredibly big. We travel to other places, we meet people from other places and we know there is more out there. Just like the author focusses mainly on our two main characters, but uses them to show us the political climate, the society and the written and unwritten rules.

And despite the fact that there is quite some magic in this book it never feels like magic can do and solve everything. The author clearly made rules for her magic. Who can do magic? What kind of magic can people do? Who's magic is stronger? Who's magic can counter whom's? There are rules and limitations. And those are constantly challenging our characters to eventually become even better versions of themselves.

I hope there will be loads more to come!

Inspector Freya Gitasdottir - this time making use of her father's name Winterglass to improve her chances gaining access while investigating a murder amongst the Gentry - and her former colleague and secret jewel thief Kel Misthollow/Lucian Thorne are back for another rollicking adventure in this fantastic world that continues to impress.

As with the first book, the story builds slowly but steadily, inexorably drawing the reader into the various parts of the plot that once again combine a police investigation conducted with the aid of supernatural means with the exploits of a heist crew plotting a high profile theft.

I loved getting to know more about Kel's background, including the introduction of several members of his family to join the cast of characters, and the story once again had me hooked.

In short: I thoroughly enjoyed every part of this book and can't wait to get my hands on the next part!

Slowbuilding. Lots of interlinking g storylines, so very interesting while convoluted. Kind of cool to see Kel/Julian and Freya back but in different settings. A new forensic scientist that she clashes with and yet is working with. The murder is so sad, but all murders are. Fresh arrests who the evidence leads to but is pretty certain someone else has done it and so has to find new evidence to follow to find the real killer. And she needs to do this to get the city back on an even keel before it implodes! All while Kel is trying to work with his team to steal an object that will net them quite A pretty penny, but at what cost? And all these storylines are interlinked! Quite the conundrum!

I was happy to return to this entertaining fantasy series. Anne Lyle has a writing style that draws you in, and you read and don’t stop. Only to be disappointed the book has once more come to an end. A murder, a theft, romance, political intrigue, a multitude of characters that intersect and intertwine. The main characters are ones I am happy to spend time with. To silently cheer from the reading side line, or to mentally say get your act together. I’m sure there are more adventures to come; I can’t wait!!! Thank you to Anne Lyle and BookSirens for the ARC. An enjoyable read with entertaining characters and lots of twists and turns. In fact, having so many characters is one of my favorite aspects of the book. The author was able to weave the characters and their actions into one compelling story with a variety of storylines….which kept me on my toes. When I know I am going to write a review I take notes while I read. This habit was beneficial for me as I had to take a some time off from reading to take care of family matters. As such, I was able to review my notes and pick up where I left off weeks earlier. I look forward to more books by this author. The Golden Griffin Job is Book 2 in the Winterglass and Thorne by Anne Lyle. I really enjoy this book because it has so much woven into the story. Lucian, a Fae, is a complex character. He is a thief, has a complicated family, he loves a police inspector, Freya, and finally, he has a blood curse on him. There is so much action and a murder pulls everything together. I feel that the characters are well written. I can't wait to see what Lucian gets into next. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Very enjoyable mystery with lots of interesting characters. I absolutely love Kel and the inspector has my heart - their journey and the entertwining criminal cases kept me on my toes, completely enthralled.

The murderer's motive was a bit weak but that didn't take away from the breathtaking chase and the beautiful writing style just adds to the entertainment.

I hope there will be more cases in this series!

It was a little slow getting into, I think that’s because I didn’t read the first. But it got much better. Won’t say I couldn’t put it down.. but close! And I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
