A year after reading the first book, I’m finally diving into the second of this duology. I still have a slight preference for the first book, but the second one is just as good. This time, we are truly in the middle of the Kingdom, surrounded by magical creatures and enchanting landscapes. The universe is so magical that I couldn't help but love it.
Of course, just like in the first book, there is a lot of misogyny, which I was hoping would fade after the first book. Obviously, it's part of the story's setting and not the author's own views. It’s portrayed so well, a woman being undermined despite holding the exact same position as a respected man. And even though the main character is only 12 years old, that is no excuse.
Brynja (aka Bryn) is still full of energy and love for the magical creatures. All she wants to do is save them and help them. Despite her young age, she is intelligent, and if she had been a boy, the other adult Sentinels would have listened to her, and their problems would have been solved much sooner. In the novel, many accuse her of not following the rules, but why should she if they won't listen to her? Sure, she does whatever she wants, but as I said: if they had just listened to her, the book would have been 10 pages long.
I have a vague memory of liking Ari in the first book, but let me tell you, that is no longer the case. He was a bad friend. Even though he apologised and Bryn forgave him, I just can't bring myself to like him anymore. On the other hand, I loved Runa even more. She is a true friend, funny, and she believes in what Bryn believes in. We all need a Runa in our lives (I could do without an Ari, though).
This middle-grade duology is simply brilliant. It has dragons, magic, envy, altruism, and, of course, friendship.
I would’ve loved to discover these two books when I was younger, and I can't recommend them enough. A genuinely great middle-grade fantasy that is bound to please!
Read this one with my 6 year old daughter who loves fantasy after reading the first one. She loved the magical creatures, the strong willed and talented Bryn. What she didn't like? The threats of the plague hurting the creatures, but more-so the threat of Bryn getting in trouble over and over as she broke the rules haha
The writing is captivating and the characters are distinct and nuanced. This book leaned more into Bryn's and Runa's relationship which was both entertaining and empowering. There was also some tension between Bryn and Ari as they sought to both prove themselves to the seekers while also continuing to do what is right. Once again, however, just like the first book there was a lot of rule breaking, sneaking out out night, and lying (even if by omission). While Bryn was oftentimes justified, it is still a behavior that needed some further discussion to discuss the nuance and how it could have gone much worse. At least in this story there ARE some ramifications that finally Bryn internalizes by the end and at least an assertion that the rule breaking/lying would end.
My daughter was upset to learn that this was the last book and that there would be no more stories in the Wild Realm. However, she does have lots of fuel for her imagination for her own continued stories in this world :)
This novel tells about a 12 year old girl named Byrn who takes her very first challenges as an official Seeker of the wild realm.
When Seeker Byrn and her Seeker friend, Ari find out the truth after a deadly and menacing plague emerging, destroying the charming Realm, they could not wait to explore and save it from the threat.
The plague has appeared before, killing more than half of the realm. However the council decided to keep it as a secret between the seekers. When Seeker Byrn and Seeker Ari find out about the disease, the other older seekers had no choice but to tell themabout it.
Whenever Byrn and Ari tried to voice their ideas, the other seekers interrupted them and turned against them. She decided to prove herself to the council by breaking the rules and entering in the Realm at night to find any clue, how to cure the sick animals. Thinking she's right and confident about the adventure, she nearly lost her dragon, Lilja.
My favorite character in this story is Seeker Byrn because I liked the way she showed courage and a pure will to save the Realm, although she made many mistakes along her way. I strongly recommend this book to studetns who enjoy fantasy, adventure and magic.
J'adore cet univers !
three and a half stars. i listened to the adio book. i've read this book before in the past, and really anjoyed it.
but this time bryn just seemed very unlikable, always breaking rules and thinking she's right. very stuck in one point of veiw and just not very likable at all.
plus, the little bit with little puff being taken out of the realm, and no-one even finding out, is just bad.
and i would have liked more about how they sent the vondor away, some dilog, quistioning, asking the liken something, we had so much build up to it, but then it ends right after it starts.
If you loved the story of Bryn and Ari the first time, this second adventure will not fail to disappoint. The Realm is still as beautiful and imaginative as ever and is under attack again. Now as a Seeker, Bryn feels the need to prove herself to the rest of the Council of Seekers more than ever, and often dismisses all other advice in doing so. It takes Lilja succumbing to the attacks before she will finally stop to listen. I enjoyed the adventure and the plot moves quickly, but would have liked some new to differentiate it from the original story.
The legend of the realm is a story filled with magic, suspense, and adventure. I love how much Bryn cares for the realm and its magical creatures that live in it. I also love Runa's personality and her attitude. I was kind of annoyed with how the other seekers just kept ignoring Bryn but i'm glad about how it turned out in the end. The events and moments in the book kept me on my toes and I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, suspense, magic, and fantasy.
I thought this was a super fun read. I loved the adventure elements I also thought it handled the topic of pandemic and that was unique element. I also really loved the characters and their adventures and also the talks about sexism and loved the fun animals in this world and also loved the focus on friendship elements. It was super quick read as well. Well def read more by this author in the future.
Read with my daughter (4th grade) and enjoyed. The main character works to save her community from a plague while also learning to be assertive and to look beyond trying to do everything herself.
The adventure continues a bit down the road from the ending of book one. Still filled with dragons, magical creatures, evil intruders, friendship and fun. A longer but easy read for parents with kids 8-12 years old.
The adventures of Bryn, Ari and Runa continue is this story as a new challenge threatens the realm. Can Bryn overcome her need to prove herself at the expense of her friendship? What is causing the animals of the realm to fall ill? An attention grabbing sequel for those who have read Book 1.
I was really annoyed with the main character’s arrogant attitude, but, thankfully, she realized her errors and became a better teammate. We enjoyed the cute, magical creatures and this story as a read aloud.
The main character makes the same mistake over. and over. and over. and over. and over. and over. and over... you get the idea.
At the end of the book she learns to not make this mistake. With a competent main character, half the book could have been taken out from her learning why
This is a really good book. If you have daughters, this is one series to include on your reading list. I love the creativity in the beautiful story world that Alexandra Ott has created in these books.
Wonderful read, well written, imparts important lessons with added hope--especially important given certain current events. I hope she keeps adding to this series.
Good story. Weird that there is a sickness going on in the book and in real life. Not as good as the first, but im glad Runa got more of a part in this one..
