Freedom #3

Freedom's Whisper

Rate this book
Jani's eyes swept the paddock. No Freedom in sight! She ran toward the open gate with Keeta trotting behind her. Maybe the filly was in the barn. But even as she ran toward the new building, Jani knew Freedom wouldn't be there... How had Freedom gotten out? Had she learned to undo the latch? Or was someone targeting Jani and Penny's horses? But they had no enemies, or none she could think of. That girl, Kara, was a little strange, but she didn't seem malicious or anything like that. A sudden, horrible thought leapt into Jani's head, making her heart thud even faster. No! That was just a crazy idea! The horses couldn't have been stolen, could they?

I finally got to read the final book in the Freedom trilogy! And while I enjoyed it there were also a couple things that bothered me.

First the good stuff! This was a very fast paced, exciting adventure to uncover horse thieves and add in Freedom’s supernatural abilities and things go from a regular catch horse thieves story to another twisty level. The characters remain consistent throughout the series and I liked Kara and related to her shyness a lot. It also had a super good ending that made me tear up, so there’s that, lol.

Now to the parts I had issues with. First the characters aside from Kara felt a little flat? I don’t know if this is just me not reading much MG and being overly picky or if the author focused more on developing Kara to the point where Jani and Freedom almost took a backseat. Not sure, but their development and POV switching did feel a tad disjointed at times.

Secondly…hmm, I’m not sure how I can say this without spoilers… Basically there’s a subplot of kidnapping that isn’t really explained as to why the kidnapper did so which I thought was a weird way to brush it off. Also I accidentally noticed this plot point at the end before I fully read the book which made me think the stolen horses and kidnapping were connected and when they weren’t I was really disappointed even though that was my fault, haha.

Even though I had a couple hiccups with the story I still enjoyed it and would recommend the trilogy if you like horse stories focused on adventure and the bond between horses and girls with a little supernatural flavor sprinkled on top.

‼️Content‼️

Language: heck

Violence: horses lunge and kick at humans

Other: a horse has supernatural senses; a horse used to be a ghost; horses are stolen; a mother is verbally/emotionally abusive; kidnapping; a woman is insane

I really thought this was a wonderful end to the Freedom series!

There was great character development and interesting sub-plots. It was fast-paced, and the writing was fantastic, as usual.

This one focuses mainly on Kara. It got a little confusing because the chapters didn't tell us who the POV was like in book two. I really liked her development and plot twists there. I'm sad we never get to see what becomes of Whisper, though. Did she successfully get him? Guess I'll never know. ☹️

Jani and Penny took a big backseat, but the humor and banter were still spot on. Penny reminds me of myself back when I was that age, and it makes for some extra nostalgia. I actually liked how they weren't as featured. We already got their story in book one, and I am glad we got the chance to follow some other paths.

We never see Elaine or Hailey again, which is weird considering how much of the book was spent at their stable or around those horses. She's another character we won't get to see the ending to, which is frustrating because she was just starting to get over her fear as well.

Sunny is a gelding in this one as well, which is at least consistent with book two, but Sunny started as a mare, so...

The ending on Freedom's POV. So beautiful! What a stellar way to wrap things up.

I'm a bit outside of the target audience, but the cover reminded me of A Horse Called Freedom (and as it turned out this book is its sequel), and since I liked A Horse Called Freedom as a kid, I figured this would be a nice nostalgia bomb. Right on. The vibe is more like a reverse Horse Guardian than keeping to the vibe of A Horse Called Freedom.

This wasn't one of the best books I've read this year.

It was very sappy. The plot was not clear until about a quarter of the way through
