Once Upon A One-Night Stand

Xena St. James always plays it safe.

Not only is Lynx Grove anatomically perfect, but he's the youngest ever owner of a professional sports team, a member of the most powerful tech billionaire families in the world, Manhattan's most eligible bachelor, and according to Xena's favorite cousin, he's a good guy. So on paper, a one-night stand with Lynx Grove is a safe choice, right?

Wrong!

So quickly Prince Charming turns into a frog, dropping several commitment-phobic bombs that should send Xena running for the hills. But Lynx is shaping up to be an expert lover, and that's how her safe decision becomes a reckless one-night stand.

When it's over, Xena vows to forget Lynx ever existed. But oddly, he keeps showing up at her lowest moments, offering to save her from the unfortunate outcomes of her safe decisions. He even wants to hire her. Lynx Grove? Her new boss?

Yikes!

Billionaire Lynx Grove isn't looking for love. But there's something about Xena that dissolves his defenses. Maybe that's why he offered her a job and insisted she becomes his roommate.

WTH.

Lynx knows he's being careless, and Xena's wise to be cautious. He doesn't do vanilla relationships. But could his beautiful and exciting new employee chip away at his wall one encounter at a time?

Once Upon A One-Night Stand is a fun, emotional, and unpredictable standalone romantic comedy that ends happily ever after.

Had potential. Hit a few marks but missed dozens more. Dragged, while skipping. Often skipped, and then stopped to ‘tell’ us all about what they just skipped. Didn’t feel a connection to any of the characters. It feels like a late in the series book, because you’re constantly surrounded by old characters with old stories, but not enough to actually know them. Turns out there’s a previous set about the other brother/cousins/sisters. As for the storyline… there wasn’t much thought into how it all connected. It just should because it’s side by side!

Edit: ahhh, just saw ZL Arkadis (next to Zoey Locke). I’ve read her years ago, and found very similar problems. Would almost certainly have skipped had I seen that first, and certainly wouldn’t have pushed to finish after I started struggling with it.

Meh

Wanted more from the characters, the story felt rushed, and could have held more history for both characters, why Lynx didn't kiss or spoon etc.
Or, the inner turmoil push and pull for the two main characters, the support characters were awful, their names and storyline were confusing and hard to keep track of so I give up trying.

Overall, the story was lukewarm for me.

Xena was at her cousin Lily place when she meant Lynx. They had sex and thought that was it. Xena had been in a relationship with Greg her boss at the time. She left him and her job with him. The one night stand that Lynx and Xena had, he told her he didn’t kiss or do relationships. Lynx came to Xena apartment and didn’t like the environment. So he told her to share his apartment, which had two sides. He also gave her a new job. Lynx has a baseball team and has a seat at GIT. Most everyone thought he would sell the team. He went in with Lords to be co-owners of his baseball team. We can’t forget about Penelope, she was alway at his side, when he wanted to be with Xena.

This was good. I liked how many different tropes the book used to push these two differing characters together. One of my favorite tropes is the fuckboy not liking kissing but then he ends up kissing the main lead anyway and falls in love. This book used that trope well, but I still believe there was room for improvement on that front. Lynx (who on earth names their son Lynx?!) didn't panic enough to make that trope believable. Also, everyone kept on saying that Lynx was interested in fucking around, but we never see him flirting or doing anything with any other woman except Xena (and Penelope, to a very small extent which wasn't as sexual as it was claimed to be).

Thanks to Booksirens for a copy of this book.

I got so confused with all the names, relationships and references to past events that I had to come to double check this is a standalone. It is, apparently. It’s not, in reality.

I feel like the story is jumping around all over the place, mentioning past events that aren’t fully explained, and I can’t keep everyone straight or work out what the significance of all the information I am being told is.

This is too much work to try and piece together what’s actually going on.

The heroine is annoying (blames alcohol and everyone else within a mile of her for her own lack of verbal self-control), self-centered (literally only thinks about herself, her wants, her needs, her reputation, etc.), selfish (only receives, never gives), rude ("borrows" her cousin's robe to sleep in and has sex on her cousin's bed without permission), insecure (doesn't believe the guy's sincere compliments), arrogant (judges her own voice as "objectively great"), judgmental (is literally constantly judging this dude as "inferior" to her...even as she has already made up her mind to have sex with him but claims that she has a "lapse of judgment" when she tells him the truth about her physical attraction to him), fake submissive (lets the guy "have his way with her"...as long as it's done her way), and a control freak (disobeys his command about what to do with HIS body part) who turned the one-night stand into a power struggle when the "hero" was honest with her about not wanting a relationship before they got horizontal. He's not smart because her pauses spoke volumes. He should've run away right away!

An example of the heroine's lack of likability and character:

"The doorbell rings, and I tense up. A deep sense of relief surges through me. It must be Lilly. She left earlier without shoes on her feet. I’m sure she didn’t have her keys either. I run-walk out of the bedroom, ready to give my cousin a piece of my mind. How dare she leave me with her guest, especially after I said what I said about my panties. I needed her to take the edge off and help foster enough rational conversation between him and me to make him forget about my momentary lapse of judgment. I swing the door open with fire in my eyes and a lashing on the tip of my tongue. But it’s not Lilly standing in front of me. A tall, strapping figure impedes the light flowing in from the hallway. My eyes expand beyond a comfortable limit, and I’m infused with shock..."

She's a guest in her cousin's house yet wants to give her a "tongue lashing" about...leaving her to clean up her own verbal mess? Really? She's in "shock" that a man returned to see if he can have sex with a woman who just told him that she's sexually aroused by him? Really?! The author keeps posting the time (e.g., "5 minutes later", "30 minutes later..."), which only served to remind me of how much the story drags even though the two main characters fast-forward through the pleasantries to bump uglies.

By the end of chapter two, I didn't like either of them but felt sorry for him because he's not smart enough to avoid getting into an entanglement with her. Since the story is told from her perspective and I didn't want to be in her head anymore, I did not finish.

Living by the Spirit’s Power (Galatians 5:16-26, New Living Translation)

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: SEXUAL IMMORALITY, impurity, LUSTFUL PLEASURES, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, SELFISH AMBITION, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become CONCEITED, or PROVOKE ONE ANOTHER, or be jealous of one another.

I like reading quick, sometimes eye-roll inducing, romance books between what I know will be "heavier" reading material. This is the type of book I usually avoid for one main reason: character names. In this one book we have a Lynx, Xena, Achilles, Hercules, Orion, and (for Heaven's sake!) Treasure. And no, this isn't set in the ancient world, its set in modern day Manhattan. I don't care how rich these people are, they'd go to their graves being ridiculed about their names. I can't take any book with names like this seriously. But the premise of a one night stand intrigued me enough to dedicate a few hours into reading the whole thing.

Basically, the story is okay. Too much of a fairy tale for Xena (Warrior Princess anyone?): not only is Lynx hella great during their tryst, but he wants to see her again, and he gives her a job at triple her current salary, and then he provides her a penthouse to live in. Meanwhile, Lynx's father wants to retire and finally give him the reigns of half the family company, a birthright position Lynx was denied after graduate school that his cousin Max, who had the same qualifications, was given without a bat of the eye. The big caveat is that Lynx settle down, have a son (okay, archaic), and sell his mega successful baseball team. Frankly, screw you Pops. I have no idea why Lynx was so hot to take over. He built his own baseball team, was denied the position after watching his cousin get his, and has to get married and hope for a son? I wouldn't have even batted an eyelash at co-CEO. And the whole conflict of it all, Penelope and Rich I understand but needing to sell part ownership to his in-laws, Max's slight betrayal that Lynx didn't do exactly what was required...it was all fluff. It was just too much needless rigamarole.

I think there were also a lot of unresolved plotlines like with Xena and her mom and then definitely in the beginning, if you haven't read Locke's other books, you for sure don't know what's going on. What Locke needs is a website with the reading order of her books, or at the very least, she needs to list the reading order on her Amazon or Goodreads page. She does include a family list in the beginning which would have been more helpful had I remembered that during reading, my bad on that one. But most importantly, I think her book, at least this one, needs a thorough editor. There were a few instances of random words in sentences that made no sense, other instances of awkward sentences, maybe incomplete thoughts. It's okay in dialogue because that's character but it was much too distracting during the actual narrative.

I am usually not into billionaire romance, but now I want to go back and read the rest of the series that came before, and wait for the next one. So that has to tell you something.

Even with this not being my preferred tropes, I was still hooked and just wanted to keep on reading and seeing what would come next.
It reads well as a standalone, but gives us enough from the side characters that I want to go read their books and find all the secrets and nuances for myself.

It is a dual POV, and there is a whole business and family subplot behind the romance itself, which gives depth and backbone to the story.

Xena is hardworking and competent, and not just the love interest. And Linx is handsome and charming, but has the brains too. They are whole characters, and that is definitely a plus for me. They work through their issues together, support each other, and grow separate and as a unit.

I had some issues with some of the plot lines feeling forced, and with the other female love interest depiction, but I guess that is just personal preference. I would have liked to see a little more character growth and "slice of life moments" when Xena and Linx are getting to really know each other, but again, that is just personal preference.

This is a nice guilty pleasure read, quick to go through, and if you are a billionaire romance fan, you will love the Grove and Lord families.

I didn't even get through the second chapter, simply because I was dizzy from being spun around, trying to find a sense of anything. This was supposed to be a standalone, which means I need not read any stories that take time and place previous to this one so I'd know who and what and where. Instead, the first chapter felt like being dropped in the middle of the book, not just starting it. I actually swiped back to the contents section (reading it on Kindle) to see if I somehow missed a prologue or accidentally read chapter twenty-something. I made no mistake, there was no prologue and no matter how much I tried to get into it from that first chapter it didn't change the feeling I missed at least half of the story.

By the end of chapter one, that was made into three parts by taking the action by five and thirty minutes in the future, any desire to read this book evaporated. Never have I read anything that was less like a standalone than this. What I read felt like a book number two in a series and whatever happened prior to chapter one - like right before - of this story was written at the end of book one.

Despite the fact I got the book free from Amazon, and I've been lucky enough to find great reads for zero bucks, I never want to try reading this book again. That one chapter and its confusing introduction of characters completely reversed my interest in this story.

Xena, the daughter of a well-known woman, used to work with her controlling and rude ex by a media company. That all changes when she meets Lynx the 11-th floor friend of her cousin Lilly. They have a one-night stand, and try to keep their feelings at bay. But that is ofcourse impossible with the attraction they have. The problem however is that Xena's ex Greg wants her back. And Penelope , the employee of GIT, a company of Lynx's family, has a with-benefits relationship with Lynx and is hellbound to break Xena and Lynx up. Until Lynx met Xena, he didn't know how to be in a relationship with someone but now he does. On top of that Lynx must secure his baseball team and co-CEO spot, while his older cousin Max wants him to give up the team. Both of them had a lot of baggage, but grow as a person by interacting with each other.

This books starts right off with a BANG! Xena and Lynx have palpable chemistry that ignites immediately, and it is everything you could want it to be. Lynx makes some comments about not being a relationship type of guy, and Xena takes him at his word. Thus begins a very very slow burn.

Xena finds herself without a job, and Lynx not only hires her, but moves her into his apartment. They try so hard to keep things platonic, and the sexual tension between them constantly builds.

The best thing about this book is the promise of this premise. Readers know they'll get the HEA, and after the way the book started, the anticipation for the HEA fireworks is high. It is a slow burn, but the payoff is totally worth the build-up. Definitely recommended!

Loved the book. It follows the lives of Xena St James who meets Lynx Grove at her cousin's apartment.
One bad day too often at her work, followed by one drink too many at her cousins, leads to her loosening her lips and her inhibitons, which sends her on a roller coaster ride with Lynx Grove.
Lynx has been a character that we have got to know through Z.L's other books, although you can read this as a stand alone , I think you will benefit from reading the whole lot. There isn't a bad book in it.
The stories are intertwined between two major families, The Lords & The Groves.
Sex & Subterfuge!
I have loved all of them.
Enjoy

Fantastic gotta read this book!!

I loved this book! This is my first time doing a book review so go easy on me lol. Xena and Lynx had a one-night stand. From that moment one, whenever Xena has a low moment or is in a sticky situation, Lynx is always around to save the day. You could see the romance starting and the falling in love between these two. The storytelling was very smooth which flowed quite well. The characters from prior books are also in this book. You can read this book as a standalone but it's best to read the first 3 to understand the characters' dynamics which I adored. All in all, this was a fantastic read!! Highly recommend 5/5 book rating :)

This is my first read by this author, and I must say that I quite enjoyed the storyline and characters. It is a slow burn romance between roommates, Xena and Lynx. These flawed but likeable souls and the unique plot make for an interesting read. What starts out as a one night stand turns into something more. It is a bumpy ride with drama and steam, humor and charm, sexual tension and chemistry. Entertaining.

Worth it 5 stars. - Wet - that’s the word that started Lynx and Xena’s romance. It’s actually a one-night stand that they kept revisiting in their head. Lynx and Xena were able to resist for a bit but once they restarted the intimacy, there was no stopping it. They figured out that it is a once in a lifetime connection. This story has the right pacing, good steamy scenes, and just the right amount of conflict. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily chose to review it.

Holy cow! Epic book like all the others in this series. I love the families in this series and loved to hear more about Lynx and Xena. The characters are so well written and the chemistry is off the charts. Only problem is, I didn’t want the book to end. Fab alpha male and strong female lead, loads of banter throughout. Can’t wait to read the next one with Max!

Beautiful

Lynx is a dream!!!! Xena was a good FMC. She was a bit insecure and presumptuous, but I liked her. I'm not the kind of woman who is so easily intimidated by other women, so I can't relate to her. The passion between these two was hot and volcanic!!! I loved this story!!! Highly recommended!!

2.25 ⭐ for me.

It was a quick read.
However the indecisiveness of the MMC and his relationship with Penelope has been so frustrating.
And the relationship between MMC and FMC progressed fast and so weirdly. I mean, I would feel so embarrassed if I announced that I had a one night stand with a guy and then started working with him.

One night stand

This book kept me reading until I finished, it was that good. A true fairy tale with all the anxst and drama that a good romance has but most important is a happy ending. I feel most people will love this story as well.

4.5 stars. Enjoyed reading however I didn’t like that most of the characters had extremely uncommon names, made it hard to decipher who was who at certain points. It also was a bit all over the place. Overall: would recommend but wouldn’t read again.

There is no doubt about how much I love Z.L. Arkadie's storylines. Spice level - definitely HOT 🔥and was surprised to read about other familiar characters. The Grove and Lord saga continues. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but the others are worth it. Paisley and Hercules just as good.

Great Read

Loved Xena and Lynx. Xena was a really special person. Her ex was a jerk, and when she quit her job he was even a bigger jerk. But Lynx was my hero for her. They had a special chemistry that couldn't be denied. Is a HEA. Really enjoyed.

Started well

Started well but by 70% it got real silly fast. He was acting poorly and she didn't stand up for herself when he lied to her
... It was all glossed over. A rather eye rolling ending

Honestly, didn't even begin to give this one a shot. We're dropped in the middle of a dinner party on page 1. No back story. No lead up. I felt like I was supposed to have some sort of attachment to these characters without any character developement. It was a hard pass just 3 pages in.

1.5 - not good, and don't know why I kept reading.. guess I wanted to know how it ended (even though it was quite clear how it would end).

And I hated the names (Achilles, Orion, Treasure..) - urgh. And too many side characters to keep track of.

Was a Kindle freebie.

It kept my attention but the grammatical errors were distracting at times. There were times that I was confused and thought I missed a page but I hadn’t and info was just skipped over. Overall, cute book.
