Firsthand source of some of the most important times in the history of the United States.

Books like this are important, and I find myself looking into this book at the most random times for reference.

Not as riveting as the second book, maybe because earlier history is more familiar or more remote.

I might have liked history when I was a kid if it had been presented like this: firsthand documents, strong voices, and many more views of the way things were than the history books present. An important series of books.
