This bright lift-the-flap book keeps the attention of the entire group.

Finish story time with the story about the Chocolate Chip Cookie Ghost.

One version of this story can be found at http://www.thedoodlegirl.com/crafts/a...

Here is the way I tell it. (first I found a cute casper-like ghost line drawing (web search "ghost clip art"). Then I ran copies of the ghost on purple, red, green, orange, yellow, off-white, and white paper and cut them out. A quick way to cut out multiple copies of the same image is to staple the pages together all around the image. In this way I cut out all seven images at once.

Once upon a time there lived a mother ghost and her five little ghosts. She fed them on a strict diet of vanilla icecream and whole milk. One day she went to the refrigerator and there wasn't any milk. She opened the freezer and there wasn't any icecream.
"Oh dear, I must go to the store for more milk and icecream," she said. She called her five little ghosts and told them not to eat anything while she was gone. Just then the babysitter arrived and mother ghost hurried away.

The first little ghost told the babysitter he was thirsty too. "Mom lets me drink whatever I want," he said. He drank up all the grape juice. (mime drinking a glass of juice and say "glug, glug, glug" Invite the children to do it too). "Oh no!," he cried. (hold up purple ghost) "Now I know why mom only gives me milk," and he ran upstairs to hide.

The second little ghost told the babysitter, "Mom lets me eat anything I want" and she popped a strawberry into her mouth. (mime savoring a red ripe strawberry and say "mmmm, mmmm, mmmm") "Uh oh," she said.(hold up red ghost) "Now I know why mom only gives me vanilla icecream," and she ran upstairs to hide.

The third little ghost told the babysitter, "Mom lets me munch anything I like," and he said as he crunched his way through a carrot. (mime crunching a carrot making exagerated chewing motions) "Whoa," he said. (hold up orange ghost) "Now I know why mom is careful about what I eat," and he ran upstairs to hide.

The fourth little ghost told the babysitter, "Mom doesn't care what I eat," and he opened a can of spinach to sample. (mime opening can with can opener). "Oh boy," he said. (hold up green ghost) "Now I'm in trouble," and he ran upstairs to hide.

The fifth little ghost told the babysitter, "Mom lets me snack on anything I like," and she reached into the cookie jar and helped herself to a hand full of chocolate chip cookies. (mime biting and chewing cookies with a big smile) "Uhhhh," she said. (hold up off-white ghost that you have embellished with brown marker spots) "This is what mom meant when she said don't eat anything," and she ran upstairs to hide.

The babysitter was thirsty by now. She checked the fridge for something to drink and found some lemonade. She drank it all up. (mime sipping through a straw) "Cool," she said. (hold up yellow ghost) "I think I'll be a banana ghost for Halloween."

Just then mother ghost came home. She paid the sitter and put the groceries away. "That's funny," she said. "I don't hear any little ghosts laughing and playing. In fact, I don't hear any little ghosts fighting or crying either." She searched the house for her little ghosts. She looked under the table. She looked behind the couch. She looked inside the closet. She went upstairs. She looked in their bedrooms. She looked in the bathroom. She looked in the play room. She even looked in the toy chest. Out popped her five little ghosts.
"Oh dear," she said. "It looks like you've been busy eating. How are we going to get you white again before Halloween?" She called the doctor and the doctor said, "No more little ghosts eating food with color. Put them to bed for five days and give them whole milk and vanilla ice cream." After 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 days they were white again-- just in time for Halloween!

Give each child a coloring sheet of a ghost outline and invite them to color them the color of their favorite food.

Peek-a-Boooo! by Marie Torres Cimarusti is a Halloween themed large flap book similar to Peek-a-Moo and Peek-a-Zoo. Toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy playing peek-a-boo with familiar, friendly, not-at-all frightening Halloween figures.

Listeners must guess who to identify a witch, scarecrow, skeleton, monster (Frankenstein-ish), bat, ghost, jack-o-lantern, and trick-or-treaters. The final page has small flaps recaping the sounds, such as clack-clackety-clack, which reveal a skeleton.

This is cute and simple, though perhaps not as fun as Peek-a-Moo! and Peek-a-Zoo!. If you have this book I reccmmend reinforcing the flaps on the last page, as the library copy was missing several. This will appeal to younger children who want an easy, non-scary look at Halloween. Good choice for a toddler or preschool Halloween story time.

For ages 2 to 5, Halloween, story time, movable-book, lift-the-flap,
print-awareness, Halloween vocabulary, and fans of Marie Torres Cimarusti.

On my own, I would have probably given this 3 or maybe 4 stars, but because my guy (was 10 months when we started reading it) is completely addicted to this book, I gave it 5 stars.

The pictures are simple and cute. Each page has a Halloween character playing peek-a-boo. The flaps are their hands (or whatever's appropriate for that character) over the face. Each character has a signature noise associated with it. The faces have distinctive eyes that stare straight out of the page which might help babies to connect with it.

Right now I'm starting to hate this book because my guy loves it so much. He makes me read it over and over and over again, day after day after day. He can't talk, but the grunting, pointing to get me to get the book and the excited laughter when I grab it and the sheer disappointment when I put it away all tell me that he is completely addicted to this book.

Super cute book for Halloween. Interactive flaps allow you to see the faces of many different costumes.
