I do not write book reviews, but I had a lot of thoughts on this book while reading it, and, considering this author is a small one, I figured I'd show some appreciation by a review.

The writing style itself is absolutely beautiful. I love the descriptive word-building and use of similar. In fact, I would say that it is my favorite aspect of this book.

The dialogue is smart and flows incredibly well, in my opinion.

The characters and their characterizations feel off and, at times, bland, but that is most likely due to the fact that the book is very short.

Similarly, the plot falls flat most times, which is, again, seemingly due to the shortness of the story.

So, overall, while the plot feels mostly lacking, and the characters feel unnatural at times, I was able to enjoy the story and to follow it clearly.

And, of course, (as said again) I was in love with the writing style itself. It truly is magnificent.

I was full of awe and tears while reading this book. It showcases the beauty of life, death, sorrow, identity, love, and much more, all seen through the eyes of an innocent soul. It is unique, wonderful, and comforting—a beautiful work, devastatingly not known by many.

Fav quotes:

“Life was about movement. You could drown yourself in suffering or let pain pass as a purifying rain, but you could not stop those waters from flowing.,,

“The same water that washes your wounds today can drown you tomorrow, the first does not make it holy, the second one does not make it evil.”

“It is easy to fall when you know someone will catch you.”

“To hope is never a pointless endeavour.”

“Because different means lesser in the eyes of others.”

“If the tiniest speck of light manages to sneak by the darkness,no matter how hard it is pushed away, the flower will always be able to follow it.”

I really loved this book, a relaxing read. You slowly get to know the characters as the narrator discovers them and you slowly find out your own story. I liked how everything unfolded, a soft reflection on life and the afterlife.

Devastatingly Beautiful

This book is a truly wonderful look at life, death, and the inconsequential aspect of time. A deep look at what holds sway over who we are and who we choose to be. It asks the question is who we are the result of those around us, or are we the only one who can truly define ourselves despite those around us?
While this book truly stands on its own, the author refers to some characters from Madeline Miller's "The Song of Achilles," maintaining Miller's feel of them and simultaneously making them uniquely their own.
