A Kingdom of Whispers
Arla knows she is worthless.

2.75⭐️this was just fine for me, it is very very YA, so maybe that’s why I found it underwhelming. Wont be continuing with the series💫

I love the way the author has formed this world. There’s a deep magic system at play but it’s not hard to grasp. I do so love to see creative magic at work and we get to explore so much of it!
The author creatively weaves the magic into both the social and governmental system. I rarely see it done so well. The impact of one having access to magic affects both their view of themselves and how other see them, an understandable affect.
I love our main character. I was drawn into her plight straight from the first chapter. All I wanted to do was jump into the book and defend her. That kind of empathy is the key to an amazing journey.
I dare not give away any spoilers except that the journey is full of wonderful surprises!

I received this book as an ARC and I just want to say I will be honest.
I think this story was very unique and for that it captured my attention. I LOVE Leo as he was thinking and saying everything I felt while reading.
The only problem I had was after a big climatic event the story did slow down a bit about 70% through. After a few chapters it picked back up.
I give this a 4/5 !

I absolutely adore this book! I was hooked from the beginning and it made me feel so many emotions from the start until the end. I do not normally cry, no matter how sad books get... but I loved Arla so much I teared up several times.
This book is going on my favorites shelf and I will reread it. I do not reread books unless I love them, and this one was fantastic!
I read this in about 15 hours, would have been faster but I got sick part way through and had to read slower due to a migraine. I shouldn't have been reading at all, but I could not put it down and so I suffered so I could keep reading it because I was enjoying it so much!
I cannot say thank you to the author enough, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any other books she publishes! Fantastically and beautifully written!

I do want to note right away that this is the first of an unknown set of stories set in the Kingdom of Whispers. I wish the next book was available already!
This fantasy story creates a new kind of magic system! While deep and complex, Jyna Maeng introduces it in a way that is not difficult to understand. As a fae and magic lover, I found myself drawn to this new system of magic.
Our FMC, Arla, is a High-Born princess with no magic. I often felt Arla was older than her 16 years, maybe 18 or so. But while she felt young and lost at times, I never found her childish and annoying, which I appreciated.
The Forest was complex and intriguing and, without spoiling, I loved the intricacies of it.
The societal politics definitely play a role with Arla and Leo and I also found some of the side characters to be perfect additions to the story and the flow.
As detailed in the synopsis, this is a slow-burn. Emphasis on s l o w. I want to really clarify that for those who will enter this journey expecting different.
Overall, really solid, fun, fantastical read and I truly enjoyed it. I look forward to the sequel.

I received a free copy of A Kingdom of Whispers and am leaving my honest review.
I enjoyed this story a lot! I thought the concept was unique and so interesting. The title and the blurb about the book immediately had me wanting to read Arla’s story.
Arla has been told over and over again that she is useless and has spent most of her young life alone and completely shut off from her family and others. This is something I kept reminding myself of while I was reading. Arla does come off a little awkward and cringey but being that she did spend so many of those developmental years alone, this makes sense. However, it also made it hard for me to connect with her. She has good character development so I’m hopeful this will only continue and progress.
The romance between Arla and Leo is so cute and wholesome. Their story took its time and developed nicely. Leo is still a little mysterious but I love that we’ve been able to see him open up little by little. It’ll be interesting where their relationship goes based on how the book ended.
Another thing I enjoyed about the book was the clear description. I was able to picture everything in my head as it was happening. Especially the forest scenes. I can tell a lot of thought and care went into those particular parts.
It was hard to read how badly Arla was treated but also so rewarding to see her get justice and overcome the abuse she suffered.
Overall, I give the book 3/5 stars. It was fun and enjoyable but has room to grow.

I was honored to receive a digital ARC copy of Kingdom of Whispers and this is my honest opinion.
I was really excited to read this as the premise was very intriguing and caught my eye. The magic system Jyna Maeng created was fresh and unique, the world was diverse and rich with a non-European culture which I don't see enough of. The world building details were immersive and beautiful so I never struggled to stay rooted in the world. The slow burn romance between the Princess Arla and Capitan Leo was sweet and gentle. Seeing a non-spice romance for YA/New Adult was refreshing.
However, I had a tough time getting into it, as much as I wanted to. I personally struggled to connect with Arla. Through most of the book, I found her to be desperate, a bit whiny at times, and there were brief flashes of childishness/selfishness. For me, that was why I gave this only three stars. And yes, there was a scene about 70% in, where I nearly DNFd this. Arla made a decision that absolutely enraged me and Leo was quick to forgive (no spoilers, I hate finding them and I hate giving them.) but I do understand why she did it. It felt so out of character compared to her growth up to this point. There were moments where the author slipped into telling, not showing which for me, is difficult because I couldn't stay as immersed in the world as I wanted to be. The pacing was good and the character arc of Arla was well done and I was satisfied by the ending (though it was a little predictable).
Overall, I wasn't wowed by it, but I didn't hate it either. This for me fell into the category of books I will read on a beach or in a coffee shop.

This is a YA fantasy Romance with magic, enemies to lovers (no spice), a deadly forest, a forbidden love, and lots of action.
I would definitely recommend this book as your next read, it was so much fun.
A Kingdom of Whispers was my favorite read so far this year. This story follows Arla who is a princess that doesn't hear the whispers, which in this story is where the highborns get their powers. Her father the King of Ulsana basically disowns her because of this and Arla desperately wants to gain the love and admiration she once had as a child.
Her little step brother gets sick, it's decided the king would send a troop into the deadly Forest where a healing flower that can cure anything resides. However, no one has ever survived being in the forest, its traps and tricks have killed many who tried to even enter into it. This is when Arla decided this is her chance, she's well read about the forest and decides she's going on this mission even if it kills her to help save her little brother. The forest is where everything changes for her and she finally is able to start to see that she isn't useless and disappointing.
I would definitely recommend this book as your next read, it was so much fun.

Given the opportunity to read this book, to say ‘A kingdom of whispers’ left me speechless would be an ✨understatement✨ . I was given the gift to continuously read this book in ONE SITTING in such a quick and short timespan, i honestly just COULD NOT drop the book!!
The magical system was so easily understandable and well put together along with every single character. Arla seojin, a selfless FML who overcomes limitless obstacles definitely touched a place in my heart. If there was one thing Arla had taught me it would be to be aware of your surroundings and bring forks in a large carry bag HAHAHA, This book may have given me a traitorous tear or two i admit but in compensation it showered me most with constant giggling and memorable moments i’d carry with me. Jyna Maeng and her amazing team definitely knew what to serve when you hear Romantasy adventure/action packed novel.
I honestly could go on for days on how amazing this book is but to conclude my review, i MOST DEFINITELY suggest you to read this book, Do not be afraid of the ‘what if’s’ and from my review give this book an HONEST READ, if you do i promise you, you will NOT regret it <3

I received this book as an ARC before it’s release date and I have many thoughts! At first, I was unsure if I would actually enjoy the book because it was just difficult for me to get into in the first several chapters. I have a strong disdain for the king who happens to be an asshole which doesn’t shock me, most kings are. I really loved both Arla and Leo, they were my favorite characters. I loved the plot and the storyline and honestly felt really happy with the character building as well as the different creatures that were introduced. I love reading fantasy because it truly shocks me how creative someone’s mind can be! This book was a great introduction for a series and I loved the shunned princess who comes into her magic late in the book vibe.
I’m really impressed with this debut and would highly recommend it to others upon release!!! You won’t regret reading this book I promise.

I received an ARC of this book so I could give an honest review.
I loved this book. The pacing, the magic system, the writing that drew me in and made me so frustrated with certain characters... Well done overall.
Area is a princess, firstborn child...and completely shunned. In a country where people are divided into castes, Low Born or High Born, based on their ability to speak the whispers of magic gifted to humans, Arla can't hear a thing. But when her baby brother falls ill, she simply has to save him, so she sneaks her way into the expedition into the deadly Forest to find the one thing that can keep her brother alive.
I loved that Arla wasn't suddenly perfect at everything. She had faults that endured, but she still had solid character growth as the book progressed. With two obvious halves, this book felt like two for one in some ways, and I was so here for it. It moved quickly and (usually) read easily. I cannot wait for the next one!

Read this book as an ARC and I'm really sad that there isn't a second book to jump to after finishing this one. I loved the world Jyna created. The society she created is different from most books I've read recently. A girl who just wants to be loved by her family and accepted. She goes off on an adventure into the Forest to save a sibling and find out the strength she has along with finding out who she is as a person. She becomes a strong woman. She goes from alone to gaining friends along on her quest to help her brother. The Forest is a dangerous place that no one in the world that Jyna created dares to enter. I'd say more about the book but I don't want to ruin the story. If you enjoy magic it's an interesting take. There is a slow burn to the story. Extremely enjoyed reading this book and can't wait for what the next chapter holds for her!

If you are a fan of the fantasy genre, Kingdom of Whispers should definitely be added to your TBR list. The story centers on Arla, a princess who is thrust into a fantastical journey full of magic, romance, and self-discovery. I enjoyed learning about the kingdom of Ulsana and it's many mysteries, as well as watching Arla slowly gain confidence throughout the book. The romance is a slow burn enemies to lovers that was a delight to read. The central conflict of the book is compelling, and had me excited to see what twists and turns were coming next. The book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger - I'm excited to read the next installation in this series to see what the rest of Arla's journey has in store!

The Kingdom of Whispers is a fantastic YA read from debut author Jyna Maeng that will keep you turning the pages for more. I loved our underdog Arla from the start. She’s optimistic, kind, and I loved her subtle humor and knack for bumping into things. As the only royal without magic, she is desperate to prove her worth and earn a place in her father’s heart. Armed with nothing but determination and a bag of random supplies, she faces increasingly difficult obstacles in The Forest on the hope she can save her brother’s life. With the help of three unlikely new friends, she begins to discover her own self-worth. Perfect for readers who enjoy adventure and a clean slow-burn romance subplot. I can’t wait for the next in series.

My typical reads are on the VERY dark side, but sometimes I like to switch it up and read YA fantasy books. They bring me comfort and remind me of all the amazing books I have read in the past.
A Kingdom of Whispers was an easy read, easy to follow story that kept me exceptionally intrigued throughout.
I can't say too much without spoiling moments, so I will just say that if you're looking for a well-written YA Romantic Fantasy, with a FMC that grows and develops confidence throughout, has a magical yet dangerous forest and great banter/dynamic between the two main characters, I highly recommend this book. I was also not expecting the twists/turns and emotions while reading this story.
Wonderful debut for this author!
A Kingdom of Whispers was an easy read, easy to follow story that kept me exceptionally intrigued throughout.
I can't say too much without spoiling moments, so I will just say that if you're looking for a well-written YA Romantic Fantasy, with a FMC that grows and develops confidence throughout, has a magical yet dangerous forest and great banter/dynamic between the two main characters, I highly recommend this book. I was also not expecting the twists/turns and emotions while reading this story.

A Kingdom of Whispers by Jyna Maeng is A Realm of Whispers book. This is the first book I’ve read by this author but I doubt it will be the last. This is a clean romance that has a slow burn enemies to lovers with a grumpy, sunshine trope mixed in that has a bunch of twists and turns! It is full of action and adventure.
This book is so well written with a complex magical world that you can’t help but feel drawn into… the characters were great and I found myself really feeling their feelings and understanding their plight. This book had amazing pace and flow… the ending though! I need book two like immediately!!! If you’re a fan of slow burn fantasy romance this is a boon for you!

This book was a slow burn in every sense. The romance - still slowly burning its way forward- and the pacing in my opinion had a similar flow. A Kinquicgdom of Whispers is extremely well written it just took a little bit for me to get fully invested. Some aspect I couldnt read fast enough other parts it took a little bit more effort to keep moving through. However, once that ending took off IT TOOK OFF!!
I am now quite invested in these characters and in Arla's growth as a woman and a royal. It was painful to read of her treatment and the way she saw herself but now that she is realizing her self worth I am all in for her journey.
All in all this book is a fun read and an interesting YA fantasy world that I hope we get to see a bit more of as the series progresses.

A Kingdom of Whispers is a quick read. Arla is a great FMC with lots of growth, where you really understand her flaws and development. I thoroughly enjoyed her journey. There is also a slow-burn romance that rolls along at a nice pace. The world is intriguing with a fun magic system that is still mysterious to the reader and the characters even as the curtain closes. But this is not the end. I kept fearing the last page and now I am left with an unknown amount of days before I can discover more about this world and the fate of the larger story. Please don’t keep us waiting too long for the next book.

This is a strong debut novel. If there’s one thing I love to read is character development and this is seen in the FMC and love interest. The wanting to be loved and accepted was palpable and heartbreaking.
The magic system is intriguing and terrifying at the same time. To wield such magic! The journey into the forest was so rich in detail that I was envisioning everything like a movie.
That ending left me wanting more and I can’t wait for Queen of Whispers and see where the story takes us next.

This book is a true fantasy book. Its about a young magicless princess, who only wants to belong and beloved by her father. The story involves adventure, friendship, slow burn love, overcoming fears and justice. I really loved this book. It is beautifully written, each word, paragraph and page intentional and all relevant to the story and future books. The ending had left me wanting more but in a good way, I want to see how Arla will fly and succeed and if her and Jun will have the family relationship she always wanted. My scenios about her and Leo and going wild right now! I deserves more than 5 stars.

KoW is a really great fast-paced fantasy adventure full of magic, deadly creatures, mystery, friendship and struggle of the clash between the high and low born in society.
It is really nice to follow along Arla as she discovers herself and take confidence.
The asian-inspired details we can found everywhere feel like a sprinkle of freshness through the ocean of book set in medieval-ish time.
I read it way too quickly and am now anxiously waiting to know what’s gonna happen to Arla, Leo, The Woman, and how the kingdom will now fare under her reign !

Wow. Just incredible. Jyna Maeng creates a world of magic unlike anything I’ve read before and it was absolutely enchanting. A forest full of magic that hides it secrets and protects itself against anyone entering. High-born elites who can hear and harness the Whispers that allow them to grasp just a small glimpse of magic. Low-borns who are at the mercy of the High-borns and are forced to serve them to survive.
In a kingdom of magic, Arla is the first High-born Princess who cannot hear The Whispers and has no access to magic. Therefore, she is useless and has no value. Her kingdom, including her father the King, shun her from society and consider her a plague of sorts.
After her stepbrothers 100th Day Debut, he falls drastically ill and Arla must make a life altering choice. She wants, more than anything, to prove she has value and risks her own life to save her brother. The journey that she undertakes could cost her life but she sees no value in herself unless others do.
Watching Arla discover who she is and her personal development was fun. As the reader, I could see her value and how hard she tries but she needed to discover it for herself.
But now she risks it all and enters The Forest. The question remains: will she survive and leave?
I cannot wait for book 2 to continue Arla’s adventure and see where The Whispers go and learn more about The Forest.

This read is a solid 4.5 for me. The world building and lore behind the story line was great. The details in the forest and the creatures that are created from Arla's whispers is immaculate. The connection I had with the main character within the first few chapters was amazing. If you like a story filled with the under dog winning in the end, this is a great one. I know from Arla's point of view she didn't win anything that she truly wanted. But I also can not wait to see where the queen goes.

So this book was a great fantasy read with magic, enemies to lovers (well what it seems to be headed towards), a slow burn kinda romance! The bad guy is clearly evil. The fmc makes me feel and go through a wide variety of emotions! For the most part I'm screaming in my head at her for choices and behavior! There is definitely a cliff hanger! I'm excited to see how the main characters grow and the problems she will face!

A magical journey that touches on issues of friendship, low self esteem and how to overcome obstacles. The story is nicely narrated with an interesting cast of characters. The story follows Arla as she tries to win her father's love by going into a dangerous forest to find a rare medicinal herbs. During the journey, she faces dangers and makes new friends. I received a free copy of the book and this is my voluntary and honest review.

I finally got time to sit down and read this book without interruptions and I’m honestly obsessed. The characters are so relatable and I loved watching them develop as the story progressed. Side note though: where can I find a Leo? Adding him to my book boyfriend list ASAP. I’m so ready for the next book to come out.

I was lucky to be chosen as an E Arc reader and got this beautifully written book, I have now run to Amazon and purchased a hard copy because this is a must read, Fmc is absolutely amazing and becomes such a badass! This book got me out of a slump and truly worth the read!!!

This book is so good! It’s a romantic fantasy (no spice) with forbidden love, really cool world building (I love the way the magic works!), found family, and an adventure through a scary forest. If you enjoy main characters who struggle with their own identity, are motivated by their love for others, and meet each new challenge with their best effort, this book is for you!
