Captain Underpants #10

Kapitein Onderbroek en de revanche van de radioactieve robo-boxers

Rate this book
Eitje, toch?

My kid still loves everything about this series. It gets really weird in this one! A lot of bizarre time travel on an evil pair of pants and big funny antics in the dinosaur times.

[Re-reading for fun because why not?]

Cute, I love easy-read comics, children books are easy on the brain and most times I can relax even more. A little meh compared to the other books I've read in the series, but to be fair, I am older so....yeah.

Book 10 of my Captain Underpants marathon fir my children. At the end of book 9, Tippy Tinkletrousers our villain from book 3.... or is it 4? (I’ll have to look it up again). Tippy a.k.a. Professor Poopy Pants is seeking revenge and wants to destroy Captain Underpants. Unfortunately, when trying to do so he ruins the future buy time warping to the past.

In book 10, Tippy tries to fix his error and also destroy his nemesis. All in all it was okay. Not good enough to rave about, but not awful. Hopefully book 11 is better.

This tenth epic Captain Underpants novel jumps in right where the ninth one left off, with a time-traveling Tippy Tinkletrousers having apparently and inadvertently vanquished our hero for all time. Fortunately, both the good guys and the bad guys in the story have access to time travel machines, so the action picks up with a complicated, convoluted quest to restore things to their rightful order.

Over the course of the wacky adventure, we get two versions of Captain Underpants fighting side by side, three versions of Tippy working together against George and Harold at the same time, and the true stories behind: the big bang at the creation of the universe, the extinction of the dinosaurs, the start of the last ice age, the first caveman paintings on cave walls (in France), the world's first comic, and more.

And, of course, the book has plenty of patented Flip-O-Rama, action, humor, graphic novel sections, and ridiculous fun.

"Wow!" said George. "You mean it's that easy? All you have to do is make up your mind and stick to it, and you can change the future?"

"Yeah, I guess so," said Harold.

Chapter 2

Let's Get Serious, Folks!

Did you ever notice how grown-ups hate it when kids are having fun? Seriously, when was the last time you were doing something fun and some adult came over and made you stop? If you're like most kids, you're probably reading this very book because some adult wanted you to quit playing video games or watching TV.

If you don't believe me, try this experiment: Grab a few of your friends, go into the corner of a room, and start goofing around. Make some noise! Start laughing and cheering and maybe shout out a "Woo-hoo!" or two. It's been scientifically proven that 89.4 percent of all grown-ups will drop whatever they're doing and rush over to put a stop to whatever "nonsense" you're up to.

You have to wonder, why are most grown-ups like this? Weren't they ever kids themselves? Didn't they enjoy laughing and cheering and goofing around when they were young? If so, when did they stop? And why?

Now, I certainly can't speak for all adults, but I'm going to anyway.

I think it's a lot easier for adults to stomp out someone else's fun than it is for them to reflect on their own lives and figure out where it all went so miserably wrong. It's just too depressing for grown-ups to ponder all the decades of compromises, failures, laziness, fear, and regrettable choices that slowly transformed them from running, jumping, laughing, fun-loving kids into grumpy, complaining, calorie-counting, easily offended, peace-and-quiet-demanding grouches.

In other words, it's harder to look within yourself than it is to shout, "HEY, YOU KIDS, CUT THAT OUT!"

Keeping this in mind, you might not want to smile or laugh while reading this book. And when you get to the Flip-O-Rama parts, I suggest you flip with a bored, disinterested look on your face or some adult will probably take this book away from you and make you read Sarah, Plain and Tall instead.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

This series just keeps getting better and better, and while much of the humor isn't really my cup of tea, it's impossible not to be amused by the adventures of George and Harold, not to mention Captain Underpants and the many versions of Tippy Tinkletrousers. Readers will surely hoot in glee at the various iterations of this villain as they peek out from his unzipped pants. The focus of this volume is a revisionist history behind the Ice Age, the extinction of the dinosaurs, and other bits concerning early humans. Middle grade readers will especially enjoy the Flip-O-Rama that allows them to animate a few pages' worth of drawings. Even the chapter titles are witty; for instance, "Have an Ice Day!" (p. 158).

My son (6) and I (the Mom) reviewed this book for http://MotherDaughterBookReviews.com Here's what we have to say:

ON SAYS:

Tippy Tinkletrousers, Captain Underpants, George, Harold, and their little pets keep traveling back and forth through time. There were lots of different sizes of Tippy Tinkletrousers and there were old and new Captain Underpants, Harolds, and Georges and they met in the future. I liked all the pictures – they make the story funnier. My favorites are the Flip-O-Ramas. They are fun and I like doing them. I really liked the cave drawings that Harold and George drew. It was cool seeing Ook and Gluk because I like that book too. I liked the part where George and Harold were explaining to the cave people what they had to do to defeat Tippy Tinkletrousers. I liked how there was a lot of Tippy’s like Mega-Tippy, Tiny-Tippy, and Supa Mega Tippy, Slightly Younger Tiny Tippy, Big Tippy. It was also funny how George and Harold meet themselves in the future and learn that they are teachers. The song in the book, “I’m Smarter Than You” was my least favorite part of the story, because it was inappropriate. It had bad words like “dumber” and all of it is teasing and teasing is mean. This book was funny and I loved reading it. I want to read all the Captain Underpants books. I think all boys (kid boys) would like to read this book.

MOM SAYS:

My Thoughts:

Well, I begrudgingly must admit that some of the issues I had with the first book do not seem to be as much of an issue in this book. George and Harold, who behave badly in the first book, really are the superheroes in this book. They spend the entire book working side-by-side with Captain Underpants and the cave people in defeating the evil Tippy Tinkletrousers. In fact, at their darkest hour they go so far as to say “We’re going to be responsible and mature from now on!” Of course, they change their mind when they meet their future selves, but you just have to read the book to see why.

There is still potty humour (e.g., the name of the supervillain is Tippy Tinkletrousers) and the story itself is beyond ridiculous and silly, but there are truly laugh out loud moments. For example, I really enjoyed reading how the crater in the Yucatan peninsula REALLY was created. That being said, the storyline is pretty convaluted and confusing with the time traveling back and forth and the multiple selves that go along for the ride. In fact, even my son couldn’t really say what the story was about. I think his exact words were “I have no idea” when I asked.

There is one thing in the book that even my son was taken aback by. As he mentioned in his review, there is the “I’m Smarter Than You” song near the end of the book. It actually made him uncomfortable – he didn’t find it funny and nor do I. He read the book before I did and he was telling me, “Mom, there’s a part that I really don’t like in the book and I know you won’t like it either.” He was right. It just didn’t need to be included – clearly it’s there simply to create controversy.

I think you have to dig really deep to pull out a meaningful message. I keep hearing the argument about the underlying message of the books: friendship and loyalty; but really it’s just a story about good versus evil whose purpose is to entertain readers. I liken these books to candy. It has little nutritional value and it is consumed solely for the pleasure of it. So, at the end of the day, if my son reads through it, finds it amusing, and moves on to a better different book, then I can live with that.

My Bottom Line:

If your kid likes the Captain Underpants books, I can report that I do feel the 10th book has less of the issues I had with the earlier books in the series. There are definitely amusing parts to the book even for adults. It’s just not a genre that resonates with me. I would say these books could be read by children 7 and up, but there truly are better books out there. I’m sure your library has copies if you are desperate to read these books. I’m just sayin’.

I will squeeze out 3 stars only because I have to be honest and say that I had less issues with this book and I did actually laugh out loud at more than a few parts.

I read this out loud to my five year old brother. I loved these books growing up, but around fourth grade I distinctly remember my teachers no longer allowing these to be read for “credit.” This is a bummer. My brother is a hyperactive boy and it’s sometimes tough for him to stay focused on books. Captain Underpants is a major exception. This book went off the rails in a hurry and kept my brother engaged through all of the twists and turns, time travel, robots, dinosaurs, and journeys through cro-magnon societies. My brother’s imaginative was humming through the story and he was so excited every time there was a new comic, new twist, and new adventure in the story. Reading this book reminded me of my own joy I had reading these books when I was younger, and it made me wish I continued reading into the series longer than when it was decided I reached an “arbitrary” age limit for the series. When finished, my brother couldn’t wait for the next book in the series, and I’m unsure if there’s a better feeling when reading a new story.

I rated this a four because I’m partial to the originals (classics), but that just might be the curmudgeon in me.

This book was amazing but al little bit confusing! i loved how the book talked so much about time traveling i have always wondered how it felt but i guess George and Harold already did it for me, it was just sad when the paradactyl and the hamster got exploded into space and left her eggs behind but it was a very interesting story
Keep it up Dav Pikley!

I do not like this book because I did not like the part when Slightly Younger Tiny Tippy made himself be 120 feet tall. I enjoyed this book because I liked the part when old Captain Underpants saved Captain Underpants from being kicked around.

Firstly, the colour images and silliness is good to get kids reading. Great.
Secondly, the use of “suddenly” as a sentence beginning became frustratingly grating.
If you’re into time travel without holes then this won’t be your book. If you don’t want to think about it much, you’ll be fine.

After going through one or two spin-off books in the series, I guess as some sort of means to bring some fresh energy back into the franchise, Captain Underpants finally made its official return with the release of the 9th book in the series, The Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers, but unfortunately, it turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. I would still say the book was good when all was said and done, as it had a fun enough story, the same solid and fun characters and writing for the characters and the story as a whole, all of the same really solid art that you would expect from the series and some pretty good jokes here or there, but it is brought down significantly by the fact that most of it is just an origin story for George and Harold, which we didn't need to see, and it was way too long for its own good, even if it did have an AMAZING cliffhanger that it ended off on too. Either way though, despite how much of a letdown this entry in the series was, I assumed it was successful enough to where Dav Pilkey decided to keep this series going from here, which he did with the release of the tenth entry in the series, Captain Underpants and the Revolting Revenge of the Radioactive Robo-Boxers.

Now we were truly getting into some REAL uncharted territory with this series here, as despite the fact that I did never end up reading the last book back when I was a kid, I didn't even know that any of these other books existed in the series for quite some time, and as a result, I didn't know anything about them or what they were gonna do in order to push the series further from here. This made it so that I didn't really have that many expectations for what I wanted to see from the book, or even what I was going to end up seeing from the book, but if anything else, I just hoped that the series would finally get back on track, rather then taking another detour like the last book did instead of doing anything actually important. Either way though, I was still excited to check this book out, seeing as this series is somehow one of the most consistently solid series of childrens' books that I have ever read, and thankfully, that did turn out to be the case once again, as we have yet another incredibly strong entry on our hands here. Sure, it isn't perfect, as it does have a few problems that ended up weighing it down, but I still had a great time reading this either way, with it acting like a proper return to form for the series, while also properly following up and escalating on what came before it, giving us plenty of the same great elements that we have come to expect to make for another solid entry in this very solid series.

The story isn't anything all too original or special, being the whole "character travels back in time and has to fight someone from the past" cliche that we have seen so many times, but it works out incredibly well here and manages to be very fun, entertaining and exciting for most of the book, making it a good read pretty much all the way through, the characters are still great, where George and Harold are still pretty solid protagonists, and others here like Captain Underpants himself, Tippy Tinkletrousers and some of the side characters they run into throughout the book are also good, even if there aren't that many moments in this book where the characterization gets to shine through all that much, which does kinda suck, the writing is great, being incredibly solid and still having plenty of really well done and funny lines seen throughout that keep things exciting and fun as you keep reading, the art is as great as ever, which I don't need to comment on anymore since I have already done so 9 times at this point, so moving on, and the humor is really good too, as the jokes that we get here are HILARIOUS, making for some of the best jokes in the entire series that help make this a hell of a lot of fun to read, even if it isn't perfect by any means.

Speaking of not being perfect, this leads us to the issues with the book, as while I don't have too many issues with it, the issues I do have with it drag it down enough to where they do become noticeable. For starters, if you take where the characters in this story are out of the equation, along with all the crazy shit that happens in the book, a lot of what we get here isn't anything too new or exciting: it just focuses on George, Harold and the others going back to the age of the dinosaurs and cavemen, while also being chased around and battling someone else through time too. That doesn't make the story any less good, of course, but it does make it so that those who aren't fans of either these books or these time traveling stories probably won't like this one either. Not only that, but there is also the factor of the humor, which I already mentioned before is really good, being HILARIOUS in several different instances, but the main problem that I do have with it to where it doesn't end up being the absolute best is that there isn't all that much of it. From the start of the book all the way to the end, it is full of NON-STOP action, aside from a few instances of downtime for the characters, and while it does keep things very exciting and fun to read through, especially with how crazy things get towards the end of the book, it does make it so that the comedy doesn't end up shining through all that much. It sucks too, because again, the comedy is so great in these books, to where I do wish we got a good blend of both comedy and action like we did in a chunk of the previous books, but that is not the case here, which does suck. And finally, as one last little nitpick, this has nothing to do with the book itself, but this book pretty much starts off with Tippy fixing the problem he caused at the end of the last book, and it then just immediately moves onto where the 8th book in the series would've gone if it hadn't been extended by the previous book, which just makes the last book completely worthless when all is said and done, and it makes me question why it was even there in the first place. Yeah, this in itself is mainly a problem with the last book and not this one, but still, someone's gotta take one for the team, and I feel like if they just took the Tippy Tinkletrousers part of that book and integrated it into this book instead, it would've made for a MUCH better entry, but eh, what can you do.

Overall, despite not having too creative of a story, not enough comedy and with it making the ninth book feel like a complete waste of time, The Revenge of Captain Underpants's Boxers is yet another great book to be found in this great series, one that brings the series back to doing what it does best while also giving us plenty more about what we loved about the series to begin with in plenty of different ways, making for a book that I had a great time with, what with its simple, yet still fun and entertaining story, a set of great characters paired up with great writing, the same great art and art style as before and plenty of really funny jokes and moments to be seen throughout, even if I do wish there were more present throughout the book to make it feel more complete. I would definitely recommend it for those that are huge fans of the previous books, as well as for those that are huge fans of these kinds of books in general, as while it may not be the absolute best that the series has to offer, it does still feature a lot of great moments and content to where it ends up definitely being worth reading at least once, which is more then anyone can ask from it at the end of the day. But anyways, since I have nothing better to end off this review with, I want to point out how there is a part in this book where they make fun of iHop and how terrible their food is, which was great to see. Don't get me wrong, I love iHop myself as much as the next guy, but I will not pass up a chance to make fun of a food place like this, so I am perfectly fine with this kind of joke being present here.

I mean, okay. You know what you're getting into with Captain Underpants: slapstick comedy, gross-out humor, a celebration of art and being ridiculous.

What you don't expect: a competent time-travel spoof (complete with competing time travel versions of characters) and a fun nod tweaking scientific tropes and concepts.

As this is a very direct sequel to book nine, it's not something you can jump right in on, but as a tenth book that does a really fun job of restoring the whimsical aspects of the story? Absolutely brilliant.

This has been touted as what might be the last Captain Underpants story. Whether that's true remains to be seen, but if it is, it's a pretty solid way to go out.

I got a little confused (okay, very confused) at the time continuum thing, also wondered if the hamster and the pterodactyl died. What keeps me up at night is: If the hamster and the pterodactyle caused the universe to begin, what caused the universe to begin the first time that resulted in their creation in the first place? Actually, it doesn't keep me awake at night. But it is something to think about.

My son and I like the website www.pilkey.com. He likes it for the potty humor and I like it because Pilkey has some wonderful things to say about child development. It is a neat site.
