The Lottery Winners

Rate this book
The Lottery Winners is a devilishly twisty psychological thriller from the bestselling author of His Wife’s Sister about the price a couple are forced to pay when they hit the jackpot on the lottery and become caught up in a web of murder, revenge and deceit.

When Callum Champion and his wife, Jade, win big on the lottery, they think all their dreams have come true.

But when they’re approached by a desperate stranger begging for help, they discover the cost of their newfound fortune might be more than they’re willing to pay.

Their win should mean they can look forward to a life of unbridled wealth and freedom. They’ll be able to move out of their tiny, rented property, finally start a family, clear their debts and never have to worry about how they’re going to pay the bills again.

But widower Gabriel Salt has a unique proposition for them – the chance to put right the appalling injustice of his pregnant wife’s untimely death.

His request puts them in an impossible position, forcing them to make a decision that will have far-reaching consequences and threatening to put them in the crosshairs of a dangerous criminal family.

They may have more money than they could ever have dreamed of, but they’ll soon realise all the money in the world can’t buy happiness – or even their own safety…

Most people have dreamed of winning the lottery! 🤩

All the possibilities and fantasies, how you'd spend the 💵, but soon after a big win, Callum and Jade find themselves caught up in a web of lies that lead down a path of no return!

"What have we done?" Soon, a text message, "the deed is done" and the nightmare begins....

This was a quick paced read for me, there were some moments of high adrenaline and holding my breath. Also a gasp worthy twist. If you don't mind suspending a bit, you may enjoy it too!

Just remember, "the perfect life doesn't exist. It's a fallacy we're chasing. Happiness is a state of mind. Life is precious, not the trinkets and material things."

My second by this author. This one is free on KU and came out in July 2023

Author AJ Wills hit the jackpot with "The Lottery Winners".

This pacey thriller about a cash-strapped couple who wins a $51 million (tax-free!) lottery was twisty, character-driven, unpredictable, and unputdownable.

Kudos to the author for expertly putting a fresh, compelling, and intriguing new spin on a popular storyline.

"Whoever says money can't buy happiness did not know where to shop" is one of my favorite Gertrude Stein quotes.

Gertrude Stein never met the protagonists in "The Lottery Winners".

I listened to the audiobook read by Harrie Dobby who did an outstanding job with the narration.

One of my besties of 2024.

This lottery book is a winner!

When their dream of winning the lottery comes true, Jade and Callum are soon sucked into a nightmare, agreeing to help a widower seek justice for his wife's death. The couple makes a string of stupid decisions and ends up in some dangerous situations involving some very disreputable characters. This is a twisty, action-packed story with never a dull moment. But I admit that I wasn't entirely satisfied with the ending and would have liked to see a different resolution.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Zooloos Book Tours.

The Lottery Winners caught my eye from the cover and title alone and was a fantastic twisty thriller from start to finish. Callum and Jade hit the jackpot on the lottery, and instead of a life of luxury and bliss, they find themselves embroiled in a nightmare. A widower approaches the couple with a proposition in relation to his pregnant wife's death and the couple find themselves in an extremely difficult position for if they do what this stranger asks their lives will be put in danger and straight within the sights of a dangerous criminal family.
This book was such a page-turner and made you question what you would do, and ultimately, weather money can truly make you happy. The couple were so different from each other, too, which heightened the story as Jade had strong morals and Callum doesn't - he was very manipulative and conniving, and I didn't like him very much at all.

"𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫, 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦, 𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬." ~ 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠

Callum and Jade are working hard to make ends meet, but there's another enough to save for a down payment for a home of their own. However, they faithfully buy a lottery ticket every week using the same set of lucky numbers, and to their astonishment, they win the sole jackpot of over $50 million dollars. It's absolutely life-changing. They can travel, buy a home, start a family...until a plain white letter appears in the parcel begging for help.

Widower Gabriel Salt has written a heart-rending letter detailing his pregnant wife's death at the hands of a distracted driver. The driver was given a shockingly lenient sentence and was seen smirking in the courtroom, gloating over his victory. Jade is moved by his plight and wants to donate money toward a lawyer. But Gabriel doesn't want a lawyer; he wants cold street justice.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see how Callum and Jade were going to handle this wild vigilante plea. I think at our core most people are good and they want justice, but they want to see it done the right way, through the court systems. But what about that small percentage who doesn't trust the courts and will do anything to right a wrong? This story went to places that I never dreamed of, and though I was initially shocked at the ending, it made perfect sense when you take the characters and their morals into consideration.

A thriller not to be missed! Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy to read and provide an honest review. THE LOTTERY WINNERS will publish July 1, 2023.

30% in and struggling. DNF for me.
Unbelievable story line; entire 15% of the book’s beginning was dragged on: the winning and “if they actually won,” where was the ticket, was the ticket lost, the ritual they had of buying tickets, contacting officials for their money, etc. The entire winning was a story on its own (it was THAT dragged on).
The obnoxious and unrealistic spending without even HAVING the money in their possession (protagonists husband buys a designer watch, a Ferrari, and more, with the same CC he’s living paycheck to paycheck on?)
The unrealistic way the protagonist responded to a STRANGER’s note delivered to THEIR HOUSE…what happened to “stranger danger?”
Stranger whom also has an unrealistic ask because these two won $51mill…his ask was obscene - that sort of “favor/ask” doesn’t require millions, but protagonist didn’t even Google the stranger at first to check out his story. She thought “this is what I’ll do with my money. I’ll incriminate myself.” What?

Maybe it gets better, maybe there’s a REASON they were sought out, but it’s just so unrealistic and dragging

You deliver me a handwritten note to my home because you find out I hit the jackpot, im calling the cops.

I usually get frustrated at how stupid people can be who win a large lottery, then spend it all. So, I wasn’t sure if I would like this book. To be sure, there’s lots of eye rolling moments, but the storyline does have an interesting take that I didn’t expect. There are a few twists which lead to a gratifying conclusion. Worth a read!

This book really frustrated me. Whilst I couldn't personally understand the feeling of winning a substantial amount of money... I really struggled to accept the lack of moral obligation of Jade and to make it worse, she continued to make awful decisions for the entirety of the story. It felt as though the author had several crime/ thriller story ideas and tried to jam them all into one. There is no mystery or climatic building, the characters genuinely make one bad decision after another and I was left dumbfounded as to how any ordinary person could do any of it. But perhaps this is the point of the story, to show us how frustratingly stupid people can be if they come into a ludircous amount of money, they become something else. And can we talk about her psychotic husband? Maybe I'm being presumptuous, but what decent human being would remain married to someone like that? I can't wait to read the reviews and comments of others!

They've won the lottery - but at what cost?

The Lottery Winners is a devilishly twisty psychological thriller from the bestselling author of His Wife’s Sister about the price a couple are forced to pay when they hit the jackpot on the lottery and become caught up in a web of murder, revenge and deceit.

I really enjoy AJ Wills’ writing and this one was no exception.

Fast paced and edge of your seat stuff - the slow build was immense!

Jade was a brilliant character; strong, determined with high morals whereas her husband Callum was the complete opposite: conniving, manipulative and immoral through and through.

I loved how such an innocent thing as a lottery win was turned completely onto its head into something dark and downright wrong.

If you like suspenseful, twisted thrillers then this one is for you!

Many of us dream of winning the lottery and read of the begging letters winners get, but I would hope not this kind. It is also said money doesn't bring happiness and is the route of all evil. Well, this book certainly takes this into account and is so brilliantly written.
It had me totally captured from start to finish. As I was reading, my mind was working overtime wondering what would happen next and adding thoughts of my own, which were totally wrong.
This is a brilliant and different well written storyline and plot with great characters. Those twists you don't expect and never see coming.
I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.
I am looking forward to the next book.
My thanks to the author for the advanced copy.

This book was honestly pretty silly but it kept me engaged. It kept trying to hammer home how money was the root of all evil, but these idiots just made bad decisions over and over.

The end was definitely interesting.

I have never read anything by this author and I mean.. who hasn’t wanted to win the lottery. This has many twists that keeps you on your toes and I’m happy it wasn’t a ‘spend on dumb things’ book. Ending definitely was not what I expected!

Jade and Cullum win a life-changing amount of money on the lottery, Jade thinks of practical things she wants to do with the money, and Callum seems to want to spend it and material things.
Even though they haven’t gone public about it someone finds out and approaches them for help. This takes them into a spiral.
I like Jade, she is very level-headed, I did not like Callum, he acted like a complete idiot and had no respect for Jade’s feelings on matters at all.

This was a tense read, I didn’t know what to expect as I kept reading, it was a rollercoaster of emotions throughout, fear, anger, and sadness.
The ending was good, although I didn’t really want that to happen, I was hoping for a different outcome.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
This is the third book I have read by A J Wills and it most definitely will not be my last!

This thriller has its good points (largely to do with pacing), but the characters make so many horrible decisions that it winds up riddled with "What was I thinking?" inner dialogue and "What were you thinking?" dialogue between the couple. I found that approach exhausting.

Well, it kept me listening (great narrator on the audio version), but it also made me mad, so good at first but never really lived up to its potential. Ending isn’t believable to me, either.

I always knew Wills was a brilliant author. However, I’m not sure I’ve mentioned how utterly brilliant his books are. This is a book that pulled me in and kept me hooked until the very last page.

I’ve read most of this author’s books and this is my favourite. This is a book that is completely addictive, unpredictable and filled with the unexpected.

We are introduced to Callum and Jade. A couple who on the surface, appear to have the perfect marriage. At the beginning of this book, Callum and Jade have a massive lottery win. Can money make their dreams come true?

Wills explores the choices made by the couple after their win. Jade has an air of caution about her which has made her likeable. Callum’s actions have been slightly frustrating because of his ruthless spending.

As events have progressed and unfolded, I’ve been pulled deeper into this one. The mystery and tension oozes from the pages. You feel on the edge as characters have issues Wouk your others decisions.

Wills writes a brilliant book, perfectly paced, addictive and unpredictable. This is a must for the TBR. There is nothing negative I can say about this book.

I really enjoyed this book, the writing was engaging, the storyline was compelling and the characters were well developed.

The storyline had me hooked right from the very start and I couldn't put it down. The book is full of suspense and mystery and you could cut the tense atmosphere with a knife, at times it made me feel claustrophobic - but in a good way.

It is full of twists and unpredictability that kept me guessing all the way through abd left me on the edge of my seat.

A fantastic read

Rounding up from 3.5 stars

I feel sad posting this review. This is the 4th book of Adrian's that I've read. I loved the others! I just couldn't get into this one. I couldn't connect to any of the characters. In fact I hated the characters. I hated the person that the husband turned into and the wife just wasn't the brightest. What person isn't aware that you can OD on cocaine?!? I'm happy she grew a backbone by the end but I just couldn't get attached to her. I just didn't find this to be the psychological thriller that AJ Wills is known for. That being said, I will still keep reading his books. I'm hoping this one was just an anomaly and I'll be able to leave a gushing review on the next one.

Y’all this book!!! Haven’t read one like this in a while and I loved every minute of it!

Callum and Jade finally hit the lottery after years of playing the same numbers. When they win a jackpot of 51 million they think their lives will change for the better. BUT when a stranger reaches out to them to ask for money it sets up a domino-effect extraordinaire!!!

This book was 300 pages of pure heart-pounding excitement! My first read by this author and definitely not my last!

This was a super quick binge read! I loved the premise which included a couple who wins the lottery and then proceed to make some poor decisions with their winnings! Clever plot and well executed despite a few ridiculous mistakes in judgement on their part!

They say money won’t buy happiness and that surely was the truth in A. J. Wills book, The Lottery Winners. It was a tense, mystery thriller with some shocking twists and turns. What a twisted roller coaster of a ride. So devilishly twisted!

This was thrilling! What a brilliant lesson for us all - I'm just not quite sure which lesson I'm going to take from this - money can't buy happiness - how well do you know your partner - winning isn't always winning!?

Right from page 1 I was hooked!

Callum and Jade are struggling to make ends meet and save for the home that they've been dreaming of for years.
When their lucky numbers come up on the lottery and they're the sole winners of millions of dollars, they think that all their troubles are over - but what if it just brings more troubles to their door?

I loved our main characters. Jade was brilliant! Sensible, grounded and ready to make plans that would help the couple move forward to a better life.
Callum was the complete opposite! When approached by a stranger offering them a unique proposition, he jumps at the chance, diving in with both feet with no fear for the consequences or their safety.

I half thought that this was a bit unrealistic at first, as I definitely would not have got involved...or let me partner risk everything. But then I guess the whole situation would have been overwhelming and it is easy to get dragged in and carried away.

I loved the writing style. This was gripping from the start and there was never a dull moment. The tension built up to fever pitch a d had me on the edge of my seat and racing through to the end.

A really great first read from this author and I can't wait to see what else is on offer.

It's beyond me how two people with such different moral systems and world views can be married without realising just how little they have in common. I mean, don't they ever talk? On top of that, these characters made so many spectacularly stupid decisions that I wanted to scream! The resolution of their situation, including the outcome for the dogs, also spoiled the book for me. I can see why it was written that way, but certain types of unhappy endings make me wish I never read the book. But much of the story between 50 and 85 percent was so exciting and suspenseful that I'll try not to be too harsh about the stupid ending. 3.5 stars.
