Topics & Themes: Kids refusing to take a nap. The world of dreams.
Curricular Use: Guided reading or independent.
Literary Elements: Story starts on title page in the genre of a want ad. Capitalization, rhyme, and repetition of “NAPS ARE FOR SAPS” to emphasize Herman's defiance. Onomatopoeia. People in his life become characters in his dream. Dynamic character, at the end Herman willingly takes nap and enters the dream world.
Text & Pictures: Interaction of text and pictures.
Additional Notes: Megan's nomination for “Won't You Be My Neighbor” Award: The Nap Master is the best choice for the Won't You Be My Neighbor Award because of its beautiful illustrations by local artist, Joe Servello. Servello takes an interesting and unique approach to the illustrations in this book. He stays within the color scheme of blue, white, red, and black. While this may sound like it makes the illustrations boring, this is simply not the case at all! The overwhelming use of blue is appropriate for Herman's adventure at sea. The adventures that Herman and the Nap Master experience come to life because of the intricate details used to depict the characters and places. The Nap Master should be chosen as the recipient of this award because of Servello's originality and unconventional illustrations that enthrall the readers and entice them to imagine their very own adventure at sea!
