Günter Brus is an Austrian painter, performance artist, draughtsman, graphic artist and writer.
He was the co-founder in 1964 of Wiener Aktionismus (Viennese Actionism) together with Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. His aggressively presented actionism intentionally disregarded conventions and taboos.
Brus was awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1997. Most of his works contain aspects that are seen as controversial and out of ones comfort zone but this just seems to add to the somewhat endearing factor of his Art.

Many of his books offered narrative depictions of his performances and fantasies. The bleak Expressionism of his "Aktionen" was, however, transformed in his later books into a more romantic form of Expressionism, often using the format of the fairy tale. In such books as "Die Falter des Vorschlafs" and "Die Garten in der Exosphäre" Brus revealed the similarity of intention between the sense of enchantment found in tales based on the theme of the journey' and the liturgical mythology found particularly in the performances of Nitsch.
