Editors Bandow (Cato Institute) and Schindler (theology, John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and the Family) take fundamentally different positions on the questions of the ability of liberal free-market capitalism to help the poor and capitalism's compatibility with Christian theology and social thought. This situation reflected in their choice of contributions, with Bandow's six contributors broadly arguing for free-market capitalism's beneficial aspects and its compatibility with Christian belief, while Schindler's six essayists find capitalism and its accompanying philosophical liberalism more problematic and undermining of individual virtue and genuine community. After the editors consider the major points of the contributions, they append two additional essays considering the moral status of capitalism from a less explicitly Christian perspective.
