In this practical guide to designing and delivering interesting and effective presentations for adult audiences, Garmston and Wellman cover the five stages of a presentation and offer tips for executing each one. They discuss stage fright and how you can use it to your advantage and explore the use of macro maps for staying focused during presentations. They also provide tips for getting to know audiences and communicating with participants who have different backgrounds and learning styles. The book includes several sample active learning activities you can use to strengthen your presentations.
Robert J. Garmston is an educator, author, and cognitive theorist. He is Professor Emeritus, School of Education, at California State University, Sacramento.
Don’t let the publish date of 1992 keep it you from reading this book, as the content is still relevant and practical for today! This is a great guide to increasing one’s capacity to present effectively!
A helpful, short guide for improving one’s presentations for sessions and workshop. Although published in 1992, many of the principles and strategies are effective today.
Being a suggested read for a graduate course, my first concern with this book was the copyright! I attacked it with the idea of sorting out the philosophies from the methods in regard to how it would be done differently (better?) with current technologies. I did find many basic principles of presenting have NOT changed in 20 years, so would definitely recommend this for any one who thinks they are a novice presenter, or to an intermediate (like myself) as a refresher. A great follow up to this is Energize Your Meetings with Laughter by Sheila Feigelson! I'd like to read his more recent book.
