Heidi Heckelbeck is a secret witch but magic starts transferring to her friends when a spell goes wrong. The Secret’s Out is a fun and engaging chapter book for young readers.
Thank you Simon Kids for gifting me a copy to review.
Something strange is going on in Brewster. Suddenly, it seems that non-magical people are getting wishes granted and being slightly magical. To help fix things Heidi might have to tell her best friend her biggest secret, and if they don't get things fixed Heidi and others could lose their magic forever.
A light mystery adventure for Heidi and her magical community to solve. I like how they use teamwork to help solve the problem.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: None Ethnic diversity: Illustrations show a mixture of skin tones among those in the community. LGBTQ+ content: None specified Other: Heidi and her mother are called witches but they only use their magic for good.
A strange occurrence releases everyone's magic into nearby objects and people. Some suspicions on others who possess magic are revealed and everyone works together to find the spell to return everything to normal. Readers see how much Heidi and her friends have matured from the start of the series.
Neither Heidi's magic nor her mom's is working. But it seems that Dad's got mom's magic and Heidi's best friend, Lucy, has hers. Nervous about her secret being know to her peers, how does Heidi get her own magic back?
Heidi is having the most perfect day ever - which can only mean one thing: rogue magic on the loose!
Okay, you shouldn't have to be neck deep in a crisis if you're having a perfect day. Just saying...
Anyway, we have confirmed a lot of things about magic and magic users in this book, opening the door to the future Heidi Heckelbeck series. It's fun getting a glimpse of how things will be in the future. In the meantime, trying to track down just who has magic and who doesn't is a lot of fun (also love another trip to the magic library).
I never thought this would be one of my favorite kids' series, but really, it's a lot of fun and continues to be. Looking forward to the next book!
Merged review:
What happens when Heidi loses her magic - by giving it to all her friends? Chaos! Now the world knows she's a witch - and no one wants to give their new powers back. In a story where it really does take a whole community coming together to right things, Heidi finds out just how many people really do care about her in this marvelous end (is it the end?) to the series. Everything comes to the perfect conclusion and helps set things up for the future - which these last few books have been doing.
It's been great to see how Heidi grows during this formative year. I kind of wish I could see her in third grade, or fourth, and so on. Hoping the character of Heidi continues on much further than the handful of middle school books we've seen so far. This has been a really fun series.
