Facing a successful future in the world of competitive surfing, Bethany Hamilton's dreams were dashed when a 14-foot tiger shark tore off her left arm. The devastating attack made her a world-wide celebrity overnight. But all Bethany wanted to do was surf. Learn how the support of her family and her inner strength helped Bethany get back on the board.
Similar books written about Bethany and published around this time are preferable to me. I find it funny that Chapter 1 is titled "From Peace To Panic" and then later in the book it says, "Bethany was not panicked. She was just focused on getting out of the water. When facing a deadly situation, some people ignore pain and focus on simply staying alive. Scientists call this the survival instinct."
I have read Bethany Hamilton's book "Soul Surfer" (which by the way it really good.) I thought this book was good, but I believe some of the facts were off a bit.
I used this for a 2nd Grade Reading Group. We were looking at the Five Mindset Stances: Empathy, Flexibility, Resilience, Persistence and Optimism. This week was Resilience - Bouncing Back and Recovering from setbacks or failures. When you have trouble, you can bounce back again.
