My next-door neighbor, Ryan Rosche, is pretty much the perfect guy.
He’s a freaking doctor, for one.
Humble…
Mature (Did I mention he’s eleven years older than me?) …
And flat-out gorgeous.
If only he wasn’t also … my boss.
Look, if I wasn’t the nanny to his nieces, I’d be all. over. that.
But I’m in the middle of a personal crisis of sorts—a recent move, a public breakup, a foiled career—not to mention beholden to a successful CEO grandmother who is withholding my trust fund until I can become “respectable” in a way my mother never was.
Falling for my boss—blurring those lines—is just the sort of thing my mother would have done.
And I refuse to be anything like Pippa Montgomery.
Besides, even if it was respectable to date my boss, a hot mess like me could never hope to land this guy whose life is 100% together.
Someone like him could never want someone like me. Not long term, anyway. And I’m tired of being discarded.
But when I move into Ryan’s house to make my job easier, and ignite the chemistry of late-night reality TV watching, meal sharing, and helping him raise his nieces, how am I supposed to resist the good doctor’s charms?
It seems inevitable. This man is just a heartbreak waiting to happen…
Fans of Jenny Proctor and Emma St. Clair will love this closed-door, age gap, forced proximity, boss/nanny romantic comedy with lots of sizzle and spice, but no on-page explicit content. It follows Kennedy Matkin, Alexis Matkin's younger sister.

Needing the Next-Door Neighbor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Genre: Rom Com Format: Kindle eBook Date Published: 3/27/23 Author: Kristin Canary GR: 4.55
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from Kristin Canary and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
My Thoughts: This is the sixth book in the California Dreamin’ series, however, it can be read as a standalone. I have not read the other books in the series, but I will be now. Kennedy is trying to get her life together after she ended a relationship, her career sunk, and she had to move in with her sister. Ryan is taking care of his sister’s children while she is in rehab. Trigger warnings of addiction, past cheating, cancer, and toxic relationships.
The story is narrated by Kennedy and Ryan, in a dual POV. I love the dual POV stories, it just gives a more balanced approach. This story follows a few tropes: forced proximity, age gap, and neighbor next door. Kennedy is strong, independent, and is trying to find her way. Ryan has his sister’s children he is balancing with a demand ER Physician job. The characters were perfectly created, they had depth, witty banter, amazing chemistry, and just brilliant. The author’s writing style was complex, swoony, humorous, creative, and just amazing. This story is the perfect end to an amazing series. I LOVED the ending, it was just the cherry on top. So sweet, endearing, and just tugged at my heart strings.
The entire series is on Kindle Unlimited. Some of the series has also been converted to audiobooks. I highly recommend picking up this book and the rest of a series. It is the perfect swoon-worthy RomCom, full of swoony love with bits of humor splashed in. A special thanks to Kristin Canary for being on the ARC team, it was such a joy to read this book. 🏷 . . #whatimreading #booklover #bookworm #bookpic #bookstagram #fiction #booksoninstagram #reviewer #bookfriends #bookrecs #goodreads #bookishgirl #2023bookgoals #bookpost #Book-Reviews #netgalley #romance #romcom #nextdoor #neighbors #forcedproximity #friendstolovers #needingthenextdoorneighbor #kristincanary #kindleunlimited
This just might be my favorite in the series! (Which is saying a lot, because I love Alexis and Dax) We got to see Kennedy a little in the last book and I was super excited for her book, especially after the teaser at the end! Her character was so strong. She’s been through so much and I loved how she learned from the past and stuck up for what she wanted. I also love her relationship with her sister. Ryan was the best! So sweet to her, always encouraged her to pursue what she wanted, and he’s so good with those kids it’s adorable!
Tropes:
Single parent (kind of) Forced proximity Roommates Boss/nanny Age gap Taking care of the other when sick
I received a free review copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I am so glad this book was added to the end of the California Dreamin’ series! Kennedy and Ryan definitely get their own super sweet and swoony, found-family, age-gap, neighbors-to-more story that can be enjoyed stand alone, but the delightful wrap up to the rest of the girls’ stories throughout is such a sweet bonus for those of us who have read every book.
Things I Loved: -Hottie McScottie -“Who’s your stylist?” -Miss Kenny -Smoke alarm -“You’re strong, Kennedy. Anyone who’s survived what you have and still has empathy like you do can’t be considered weak.” -Paint -Gorge-ful -“It takes all my willpower not to melt into his touch. Nah, too late. Splat. I’m a puddle at his feet.” -World’s Best Hunkle -Watching The Bachelor -“We’re like a regular soap opera. You really should run away now.” “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m still sitting right here.” -“Okay, Aladdin.” -Old Man (My hubs & I have a 6 year age gap & I joke like this with him sometimes 😂) -“You just never know what the future holds. All you can do is live for today.”
Man, that epilogue. All the feels! It is so, so good. 🤍 I really loved this story, it has great depth layered in with the fun and romance, and I can’t wait for the next series!
Trigger Warning: The MMC has his nieces due to his sister’s struggle with addiction and he had a past struggle with serious illness. Our FMC is dealing with things from her past with her parents including cheating & an unstable home, and deals with some manipulation by a family member. As someone who can relate to all these aspects—this was done so well and added great depth to a sweet and fun story.
Needing the Next Door Neighbor is another fabulous rom-com by Kristin Canary! Seriously I have loved everything I have read by her and she became one of my auto read authors after I read my first book by her. She has a way of bringing you unique and fun stories with great depth. This one was super cute and gave me a comfortable, happy place kind of feeling as I read it.
This is the 6th book in the California Dreaming series but can be read as a standalone. We first met Kennedy in Engaging the Office Enemy and I was super excited to finally read her story. She is trying to put her life back together after a recent breakup and a shattered career. Not to mention her meddling grandmother who is trying to control her by withholding Kennedy’s trust fund and trying to get her to take a position at her own company. After meeting her next door neighbor Ryan and helping out with his two nieces Ava and Mila she decides to take control of her own life and accepts a position as his live-in nanny to help put herself through college. Only one problem. She is seriously attracted to Ryan and falling for him would be just like her mother.
I loved both Kennedy and Ryan! Dr. Ryan is such a sweetheart with his curly hair and Southern charm. He is super adorable with his nieces and would do anything to help them. Lucky for him, Kennedy also feels that way about the girls. These two have such a great connection with each other and Ava and Mila. I loved how Kennedy always seemed to know just what they needed. The scene where she helps Ava paint her room was so touching. Kennedy has some problems to work through but she is so mature for her age of 23 and the 10 year age gap with Ryan works and is done so well. I smiled so many times reading this book that it became permanent. Loved when Ryan and Kennedy watched the bachelor together, the birthday dinner out, the towel scene, and Choles advice of “you just never know what the future holds. All you can do is live for today.”
The epilogue chapter will warm your heart and bring tears to your eyes. I am so glad it was included. It was a beautiful wrap up to this book and for the characters in the previous books.
Now I am super excited to head to Hallmark Beach for the next series as well as catch up on the first couple books from this one that I missed. Highly recommend this book and the entire California Dreaming series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
How did I JUST find this series!?! This is the 6th and final book of Kristin Canary’s California Dreamin’ Series. It can be read as a stand-alone but I will definitely be going back and reading the other books in this series!
Kennedy, a former social media influencer is just out of a relationship and moves in with her sister (and her roommates). She has the option to go work for her wealthy Grandmother and get her trust fund but decides that she is not yet ready for that option. She starts working at a local coffee shop until a job offer from the next door neighbor falls in her lap!
Dr. Ryan Rosche is the said neighbor, who she happens to meet when his dog eats her pie and then again when Kennedy comes home to find his niece sitting in their living room. She takes her back to his house, she finds an exhausted Ryan who is in serious need of help with taking care of his two nieces who he has temporary custody of while their mother is in rehab. The attraction is there from the beginning, they are apprehensive with the 11 year age gap.
This book is just SO good! I love the chemistry/banter between Kennedy & Ryan - you could just feel the sparks flying off the pages throughout this book!. I love how strong Kennedy is - overcoming a crappy hand that she was dealt and finding the happiness that she always wanted. Ryan is just amazing - stepping up and being the father figure that his nieces truly needed.
I loved all of the side characters in this book and can’t wait to read their stories! This was a quick & easy read and the ending was just superb! The only thing that I would have changed would be to make this a dual POV - those are my absolute favorites! Overall this is a fabulous book!
𝕋𝕣𝕠𝕡𝕖𝕤… Age Gap Forced Proximity Found Family Boss/Nanny
Thank you to Kristin Canary for both the physical and ebook copy of this book for my honest review!
I cannot believe this series is over. I have loved these feel-good stories, and endearing characters. As a child of the rom-com era, I have been able to rely on these books when I need a giggle and a bit of clean romance.
Here we follow Kennedy & Ryan as they try not to fall in love while fostering Ryan’s nieces and sharing a boss/employee dynamic. You know, you almost can’t help but fall when there’s kids involved. My husband and I fostered and adopted one of our daughters, so that was an element of this storyline I really appreciated.
One thing about this author, I can trust where we’re going. I know we are headed for a HEA, and I know we are going to score a zero on the FOTMS scale every time. I love that. Another thing I can trust Canary for is characters I want to see win the day.
I’m not going to lie, I got a little teary-eyed reading the last chapter. It was kind of like a celebration of family life, and friendship. You know, the real kind, where everyone genuinely roots for the others.
Excellent palate cleanser for my book slump. A special thanks to the author for an ARC of this title. The review and opinions are my own.
Hilarious and heartfelt. This well executed age-gap romance (not usually a trope I enjoy or relate to) has great kid/preteen and dog characters to boot. I adore large friend-group/family series like this one and fully expect to revisit these characters in the future with rereads in addition to eager anticipation for the future spin-off series.
I borrowed this title through the Kindle Unlimited program. The opinions expressed are my own.
This was a really cute, swooney, heartfelt, sweet book!! Dr. Ryan is the nicest guy ever!! And he has curly hair too which is just adorable!! Not only is he nice, sweet, has curly hair, has muscles, has a Southern accent and says “darlin” multiple times (ugh, call me darlin any day and I will go nuttz) he is adorable with his nieces!!! A man who is sweet with kids=a keeper!!!
Kennedy has some issues (but let’s be honest, who doesn’t?). She has been basically abandoned her entire life and has some major insecurities. She is beautiful, but even that has been damaged due to how awful others have treated her. Lucky for her, she has a really awesome group of friends and sister who loves her. I love Kennedy’s heart, she truly puts her whole self into the people that she cares about and you truly see and feel this throughout this book. I loved this book. I hadn’t read the others, but now I really want to see the stories unfold for the other characters in this book, tho not having read them I could still follow the story perfectly.
*I received a copy of this book as an ARC reviewer, but a positive review wasn’t required. All thoughts are solely what I personally thought of this beautiful book.❤️❤️❤️
OH MY SHEESH (iykyk)!!! This book was the perfect finale to the California Dreamin’ series.
Kennedy gets hired as a live-in nanny for her hot next door neighbor who has recently gotten temporary custody of his two nieces. I loved seeing Kennedy connect with Ava and Mila! And it was soooo fun to watch Ryan and Kennedy (futilely) try to resist their feelings. I love love! Also, THE EPILOGUE!!!! I loved getting a glimpse into the lives of all the characters 7 years later.
Reading this also got me so excited for Beachside Kisses with My Bodyguard which comes out next month and will give us Chloe and Frederick’s story!
Favorite Quotes: -You’re strong, Kennedy. Anyone who’s survived what you have and still has empathy like you do can’t be considered weak. -None of us, myself included, is the sum of our mistakes. It’s what we do with our failures that matter, not the failures themselves. -Our past doesn’t dictate our future, Kennedy. Only we can do that, if we’re brave enough to speak up and take what we want.
I must admit that when I initially started reading this book, I feared that perhaps this wasn't going to be one that I was going to relate to well. I mean when the female lead refers to NSYNC as an 'old group', I felt my 90s kid heart break just a little bit! Ha! How was I ever going to connect with a character who believes such a thing!? And yet, I pressed on and am so glad I did because by the end, I actually enjoyed it very much.
This book took on several tropes I enjoy- such as forced proximity and found family and also some that I don't usually enjoy quite so much--like an age gap. Still, I found that even those tropes that I don't particularly care for were done very well. The age gap between Kennedy and Ryan is only 11 years, so nothing over the top... and it led to some fun banter back in forth that I really enjoyed. To be honest, it reminded me a bit of the way I tease my husband about being old, and we only have a 4 year age gap between us. I really loved the chemistry between these two, and how they both cared for Ryan's nieces so wonderfully. While the chemistry was fantastic (and those kisses, wow!), it was still a clean read. Lots of swoon-worthy moments and attraction, but it goes no further than kissing, and no language either.
This is the 6th and final book in the California Dreamin' series. I had not personally read the previous books in the series and found it read just fine as a standalone. I definitely suspected that some of the other couples that made appearances throughout were from those previous books, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything. The epilogue definitely seems to tie things up for everyone though, so it definitely wouldn't hurt to read them all in order. I know I'll personally be going back and reading the rest myself.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. If you are looking for a good closed-door romance, this is certainly one worth checking out!
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
As sad as I am that this series has come to an end, Kristin did a PHENOMENAL job wrapping it up.
Ryan + Kennedy's love story fits right in with the rest of the group.
*This is the 6th & final book in the "California Dreamin series. While each book can be read as a standalone, they are best enjoyed in order. 🤍
💭 Oh my stars. This book!
After things take a huge turn in her life, Kennedy finds herself living with her sister. She has no money and no idea what to do with the rest of her life.
Ryan has just become the temporary guardian of his two nieces. But because his job as an ER doctor is very demanding, he is desperate for a nanny, and Kennedy is desperate to make some money.
Guys when I say this is my favorite book in this series. 😭🙌🏻 It's like a twist on the single dad trope and I'm obsessed.
The chemistry/attraction between R+K is there from the very beginning. I love how Kennedy can just breathe and be herself around Ryan. How Ryan can convey so much without even saying a word. 😭 Ryan's devotion to his nieces and sister.
AND as if I wasn't already in my feels by the end of this book, Kristin gave us THE BEST EPILOGUE EVER. There is nothing better than seeing some of your favorite characters living their best lives in the future. And we got all of it. 😭
I honestly couldn't have picked a better couple/book to finish off this series with. Thank you, @kristincanaryauthor for allowing me to be a part of this journey from the beginning. I cannot wait to see where you take us next.
Read if you enjoy:
✨Hot Doc ✨Nanny ✨Forced Proximity ✨Found Family ✨Age Gap
I think this was the perfect way to wrap up the series. Even though we hadn't seen alot of Kennedy throughout the other books, I loved her as an addition to the group! She brought so much life and character to the story, and she fit seamlessly into the California Dreamin' girls' group.
Kennedy's past was heartbreaking, but seeing her strength and willingness to move forward and break out of the preconceived notions people had about her was wonderful. Her interactions with the kids as their nanny and friend warmed my heart, and seeing her relationship with her sister also blossom was lovely.
Dr. Ryan? Yes, please. He was such a great leading man, and his family dedication was top notch (even if it was to his detriment at times). His past was a little shaded, and one aspect really seemed to come out of left field. I get that it played into his narrative and set him up for the present situation perfectly, but I also felt like it was a pretty serious thing that was sort of brought up then glossed over.
Overall, I loved Ryan and Kennedy together, and I thought they made a fantastic couple. The age gap was respectable, and the slow burn combined with their natural chemistry made for an excellent romcom. They also had cute nicknames for each other, and I personally thought that was adorable. I'm not always a nickname fan, but I can get on board for these!
Read if you're in the mood for: age gap romance, small town vibes, Southern men, doctors, two adorable children, the nanny and the boss relationship, slow burn, will they/won't they, and tons of cute friend moments.
I’m wondering if I read the same book as everyone else. I liked Alexis and Dax’s story and I haven’t read the rest, but the excerpt from theirs made me want to read this one.
Things I liked: Kennedy’s relationship with Ava and Mila. I think it was well done, showing the struggles of the girls being left by their mom and having to adjust and Kennedy’s effort to help them. The sweet moment between Alexis and Kennedy sort of resolving how Kennedy perceived Alexis’s opinion of her decisions.
Things that almost made me DNF: sorry, but Kennedy’s inner monologue was annoying. Also I get this is an age-gap romance but I have such a hard time viewing 23/34 referring to each other as “Old Man” and “Young’un”. And Ryan was barely southern for the first half of the book, then all of a sudden it’s “darlin’” (note that obviously the g had to be left off so you knew he was southern) every other page.
The ending was also just so meh for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Next door neither Age gap Single guardian Nanny Sweet romance
I really liked the FMC and her relationship with the girls she's nannying, but the MMC was totally blah. There was was barely any introduction or description other than hot doctor.
this is a series but can be read as a stand alone.
Even though I say every book is my favorite. This one truly is my favorite 💕
This story flows so nicely and you can’t help but be sucked into the life of Kennedy and Ryan. There is fairly large age gap between them, but Kennedy is wise beyond her years and she uses her past experiences to help out Ryan’s nieces.
Seeing her come into her own is an absolute joy. Ryan has his own past which is holding him back, but is he willing to open up his heart ?
Forced proximity Nanny/Boss Swoon worthy kissing
It was fun catching up with all the friends from previous books. Sadly, this is the final book in the California Dreamin series. Kristin does us a solid favor and provides updates on all their lives. I must admit to tearing up when I read the final line in the book.
One thing I’ve come to LOVE since joining bookstagram and finding more fun books, is a series that follows a whole friend group! I was so excited to get an ARC of Kristin Canary’s book “Needing the Next Door Neighbor,” which is the conclusion in “The California Dreamin,” series and WOW!!
I really loved this friend group and this ride we’ve all been on together! Kennedy and Ryan’s story was so good and I’m so happy it was included in the series! I feel like there was a lot of emotion in this book, and Kennedy really impressed me with how mature and wise she was, despite everything! I honestly loved the age gap, and off limits romance, it worked so well for them!
The addition of Ryan’s nieces was so good too! I loved the bond they made with Kennedy and how wonderful she was with them naturally! It was soo beautiful! I absolutely loved this book, and now you can read it to because it’s RELEASE DAY!!! :) do yourselves a favor and download this one on KU today!
I received a free copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Before reading I wasn’t sure we needed Kennedy’s story. I mean she was a background character that didn’t really register to high on my radar and the series felt complete; but oh my I’m glad to say I was wrong! This may actually be my favourite book in the entire series.
What I Loved:
*This had all the heat and chemistry you’d want in a clean rom-com. *Some of my favourite tropes:Age gap (11 years and not creepy); Forced proximity, Nanny, Single Uncle with Nieces, Hot Doctor, found family. *Both MC’s were a little damaged but still acted with maturity and awareness *Dr. Ryan may seriously be one of my favourite MMC’s 🫠 *Sweetest nieces *Kennedys relationship with Mila & Ava *Great character growth *Cameos from all our favourite past couples *Princess Chloe & Tia *did I mention chemistry?? *sweet epilogue
What I didn’t like
* Honestly nothing, this was a great end to the series *ok if I have to name something I would have loved this to be dual POV. We are given a bonus chapter from Ryan’s POV but that just reinforces how awesome it would have been to see things through his eyes.
Thank you to the Author for an ARC in exchange for this honest review.
I’ve been reading this series and was excited to get an ARC of this book. It can be read alone, but don’t do that to yourself. Everyone kinda of crosses into each other’s lives and have their own stories and you don’t want to miss out on their bond.
This is Kennedy’s story. It’s about discovering that love is greater than our pasts. Kennedy wants the future that is on the horizon, but stepping into it requires courage and confidence.
Ryan gives her the courage and feeds her with confidence. “Hello, Hottie McScottie.” I’m pretty sure TV ruined doctors everywhere. Hahaha. Who do you picture as your dreamy doc? Nobody? May I present Ryan…
This is filled with light heartedness until it digs deeper. There is humor and sadness. It’s the ending and a beginning. And all the fun that happens in between. The struggle with Ava and the love that wins her over.
There is an age gap between the MCs, but it is bridged in so many fun believable ways. This author will have you there for every little glance. Family and friendship ties give the neighbor’s love a chance.
I received a complimentary copy but these are my thoughts and a positive review was not required.
<Synopsis: Kennedy needs money and is willing to work hard to move on with her life, but she didn't expect that the hot next-door neighbor could help her. They will be able to put the attraction on the side to make things work?
Includes: ✨ Forced Proximity ✨ Boss/Nanny ✨ Age Gap ✨ Found Family ✨Single Tutor ✨Found Family ✨Single POV
🌶️Heat Level: Fire Kisses Close Door Mild Innuendo Attraction/Tension: 🔥🔥🔥
My opinion: This is my first ARC and my first Kristin Canary book. I really enjoy the light read and how fast paced it was. It's a close door romance, but you can feel the chemestry and attraction between the caracthers. Ryan is one of my new book boyfriends and I can't wait to read the previous books on the series.
TW: Infertility, Abusive Ex (Past)
*I received a free review copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.*
this was such a cute wholesome read! I highly recommend reading it if you want something light and fluffy.
This is the last book in the series. It's a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the previous books!
We follow the mc's Ryan and Kennedy, which I adore so much. Their relationship is so sweet and genuine that you can't help but love them both.
The thing I enjoyed most about the book is the found family. Gosh, I'm sucker for found family and this one HIT. I enjoyed the friendships and relationships. The banter. Their group of friends is something you'd want in real life!
Ryan is an amazing guy that I wish was real because ARE YOU SERIOUS???? He's a freaking doctor AND HE'S THE SWEETEST MAN 🥹 I love the way he cares about his family. He's fun, adorable, smart, caring, loving, HOT, AND AN OLDER MAN *wink wink* yes it's age gap!!!!! (he's 11 years older) I JUST LOVED the moments where he was with his nieces, because yes, if you thought it couldn't get any better, it's single parent trope! This man has sneaked his way into my heart and will now stay there forever!
Kennedy was an enjoyable character as well. I think for her age (23) she's very mature, which is something you don't see often in books when it comes to young fmc's. I enjoyed that. It was also lovely to see her change through the story. Where in the beginning she wasn't too confident in her decisions to knowing what she wants. I think this book perfectly portrays how a single person can help you for the better. Or worse. In this case, Ryan helped Kennedy become more confident in herself. To trust herself. Believe in herself. It was beautiful experience.
Hehe this is book has the nanny trope so y'all already know there's forced proximity!!!!! There's a particular scene where she's in a towel. OOOF. This book isn't even spicy. But you can FEEL THE HEAT. THE TENSION. Between these two. So. good. There was also the sweetest moments where my heart just ugh wanted to explode. Like when Ryan and the girls got sick and she took care of them. 🥰
“It’s not that. I don’t mind. It’s just … I’m sorry you had to deal with that.” He pushes up on one elbow. “And still you stayed.”
“Of course I stayed. You were sick and needed me.”
ugh my heart <3333✨
Teeny tiny problem this book isn't dual pov so it kinda sucks that you don't get to see how he feels ): on the bright side you do get a bonus scene from his pov. There's also no unnecessary drama! Which I didn't hate nor liked but eh still good! And if you're wondering why I rated it 3 stars that's just my rating scale. Don't take the stars to seriously.
All good things must come to an end. Needing the Next-Door Neighbor is the 6th and final instalment in the California Dreamin’ series by author Kristin Canary. It is always bittersweet saying goodbye to characters you have come to hold dear and this was no exception. Kristin did a wonderful job of creating this fictional world and I am so honoured to have been an advanced reader for several of them.
I loved Kennedy, she is in her early twenties and trying to figure out which direction to take her life in. Having recently gone through a rather public breaking and the pressure from her CEO grandmother to come work for the family business so she won’t turn out to be a disappointment like her mother is weighing on her. She has taken refuge with her sister to get some clarity and hopefully earn enough money to be able to put herself through school and finally prove to her grandmother but more importantly herself she can take care of herself. Kennedy is such a sweet and loving person. She has been through a lot considering her young age and it shows in her maturity and how she approaches life.
Ryan Rosche seemingly has his life together, he is in his mid-thirties, is a well loved Dr at the local hospital and owns his own place, the only thing he can’t seem to find is a woman to share his life with who can accept his hectic work schedule. Ryan is a true gentleman, he is kind, thoughtful, generous and fiercely devoted to his family. Needing the Next-Door Neighbor was a really well done age-gap, close proximity clean romance. I’m usually really hesitant to read age-gap romance as I am often left with a icky vibe but it really worked in this book. We get a really good sense of who Kennedy is, she is strong independent and while she would do anything for the people she loves she has boundaries and knows it is time to prioritize her future. I LOVED that the age gap was addressed and some of the side characters addressed some concerns as this is often glossed over so it was refreshing to see them bring it to light.
One thing I loved about this book and the series in general is the strong friendship between the leading ladies and how supportive they are of each other. This book in particular also focused found family and Kristin Canary does that so well.
I’m sad to say goodbye to these characters but so excited to see what comes next.
Thank you to author Kristin Canary for the eARC in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Wrapping up this series was bittersweet because I’ve enjoyed it so much, but Kristin Canary just keeps getting better and better! I wasn’t sure if she could top Alexis and Dax’s story since I loved their chemistry, but she DID! I loved Kennedy and Ryan’s story every bit as much!
This adorable age-gap, boss/employer romcom was clean, hilarious and cute! Contrary to the snark I loved in Alexis and Dax’s story, this story swelled with sweetness and a bubbly, happy kind of attraction between the two main characters who were similar in so many ways, making their story enticing and delectable!
Kennedy was a beautiful, strong woman who I enjoyed immensely. She’s been through some tough stuff in her lifetime and her character continued to deepen and grow after meeting Dr. Ryan and his nieces. I enjoyed her servant’s heart and her free spirit. Her personality won me over right away and I was totally cheering her and Ryan on, as they were well-matched with his generous, thoughtful personality. Their forced proximity was fantastic, creating the perfect amount of sizzling tension and flirty interactions which led to an exciting chemistry.
I loved Ava and Mila as secondary characters, their young personalities shown through in this story and added just the right amount of heart and fun. Kennedy and Ryan’s love for them was so heartwarming.
Overall, this story was so well-done! It had heart, chemistry, character growth, friendship, sisterhood/family bond, and one incredible amazing day date scene that I just loved! A definitely must read and the perfect ending to a fantastic series, that I must admit, I’m a little sad is over, though the epilogue couldn’t have been any more perfect!
P.S. DO NOT miss the bonus scene to this story, told from Ryan’s POV of a pretty hilarious scene in the book!

A few months ago, Kennedy Matkin moved to San Diego to live with her older sister Alexis. She'd just broken up with her boyfriend of two years, who took revenge by spreading rumors about her online to sabotage her career as a social media influencer. Her wealthy grandmother refuses to give her access to her trust fund unless she moves back to San Francisco to work for the family company, where her ex is already employed. Unwilling to live under her grandmother's thumb or deal with her ex, Kennedy instead gets a job as a barista and starts saving to go back to college.
Meanwhile, Alexis's next door neighbor, ER doctor Ryan Rosche, recently took temporary custody of his nieces while his sister serves jail time for a DUI. Finding childcare for 11-year-old Ava and 4-year-old Mila has been a challenge, and both girls are struggling with feelings of abandonment. When Kennedy walks Ava home one day after finding her hiding out in Alexis's house, she sees their struggles and impulsively offers to help. A couple days of babysitting quickly turns into a full-time job as Ava and Mila's nanny, complete with room and board. The only problem is the sizzling attraction between Kennedy and Ryan, which they agree can't go anywhere. Even so, living under the same roof, they can't help growing closer. Will they be able to resist acting on their feelings?
I loved Ryan and Kennedy's story so much! The chemistry and banter were fantastic, but I also loved that they had real conversations. Even early in their acquaintance, they didn't shy away from the deeper topics. They were each dealing with more than their fair share of baggage from the past, but the common experience of losing parents when they were young seemed to help them connect. It also made them more sympathetic to what Ava and Mila were going through in their mother's absence and increased their determination to be there for them in every way possible. That said, I really enjoyed the lighter moments in their courtship as well, particularly Kennedy getting Ryan hooked on reality TV.
I highly recommend this funny, sweet, and heartwarming story for all sweet/closed-door contemporary romance and romantic comedy fans. In fact, I think it's one of my favorite books of the year so far! I can't wait to find out what the author comes up with next.

I could not put this book down. I knew from the end of book five in the California Dreamin' series that I was going to love this book and yes, I loved this book. Don't worry, if you haven't read the others yet you can read this as a standalone and still enjoy the story. (But seriously, consider reading the other books too because they are swoony with a capital S.)
Ryan and Kennedy stole my heart. These two are dreamy, charming, cute...I could go on. I loved them. Their dynamic, chemistry, tension. Everything about them individually and most definitely everything about them together-and I love how that is an important piece of the story.
Kennedy is pretty mature for her age, even if she doesn't see it, and I love how her mothering instinct just kicks in with Ryan's nieces and she becomes a role model for them quickly. I really loved this and many other things about her character. Ryan is dreamy and so stinking sweet he melts my heart every time he is on the page. The issues they have to overcome to find love and happiness felt so real and raw for me as a reader. Canary has a way of doing that in her stories, giving us the everyday struggles of life, family and friends. I really appreciate that about her story telling.
Speaking of friends. Loved every single one of them in this story and how this group of ladies, as they always are, is so supportive of Kennedy and there to say what needs to be said while also fun, silly and strong. Love the friend group, and all the men that come with them. Getting glimpses into Alexis and Dax's relationship following book five was also a big bonus.
And oh, my stars, Kristin Canary, that epilogue just made my heart happy. Yes, there may have been tears because it was such a beautiful wrap up to a fantastic series. That was the cherry on top to a beautiful story and series.
If you have not read the other books in this series, I highly recommend that you do. Book five and six (this one) are my absolute favorites. This has quickly become one of my favorite sweet romcom series out there and Canary is definitely an auto buy author.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors. A review was not required, and all opinions are my own.
Their first meeting was so funny😅. These two were just the best. I loved how she was all in for helping the girls. Kennedy's past really took a toll on her, but it was amazing seeing her grow.
The sisterly bond with Alexis is everything. I loved seeing Dax & Alexis 😍, as well as all the other couples! It was so special 💚
I loved how Ryan was always praising Kennedy for who she was. Telling her how kind, brilliant, empathetic & strong she is... Their dynamic, teasing, banter, chemistry & the tension, it was really good👌🏻🔥.
Ryan's just so kind & strong, he loves his nieces so much & it's so heartwarming seeing him being so caring. The whole scene for her birthday 🥺💚 he was such a sweetheart 😭.
I love the communication they had with each other. It was so precious to see them being so vulnerable. I loved how Ryan was on board with doing the stuff she liked, that were previously mocked by her ex.
Kristin knows just how to do the perfect balance with the age gap (~10y)! I loved seeing them getting to know each other, showing their fears & talking things through...also, their nicknames😍
I didn't like her Gran. I understand that she tried to do what she thought was best for Ken, but that just wasn't the way. I'm glad Ken stood up for herself.
These two were too giving... which lead to some strained situations. But, despite their fears, insecurities & making wrong choices, they found their way back to each other💚😍.
The epilogue was super sweet 🥺. This series is so wholesome 👌🏻 I can't wait to read the next one! I'm all in, as always🙌🏻.
⚠️TW: substance abuse (mentioned); parental abandonment; a loved one having cancer; a loved one in a car accident. DM me or Kristin for a small delicate issue at the end (avoiding giving spoilers).
💚 * I was kindly gifted an ARC from the author. This doesn't influence in any form my review/opinion of the book*
Needing The Next Door Neighbor is the last book in the California Dreaming series (aka. the best indie author book series ever!!) which can all be read as stand alones! This book is heartwarming, unpredictable, unique, swoon worthy, stunning, relatable, fun, sweet, and incredible!! I am obsessed! I honestly could not love this book more! It is all my dreams wrapped up into one book and has given me so much hope for my own future love life! I relate to the characters in this book on a deep level! This one is right up there with The Love Hypothesis competing for favorite Romance/Rom Com EVER!! It is simply that level of phenomenal! So go pick it up now if you are a sweet romantic comedy lover or looking to try a different genre than you normally read! It is the most wonderful book and totally appropriate if you have teenagers who love a good romance!
Kennedy is the most kind, caring, loving, helpful, funny, beautiful, honest, and sporadic woman! She is not a meek shy type of kind, but a vibrant, lively, and proactive type of kind. Her actions say it all! Kennedy is so many wonderful things, but she doesn't see herself as any of them. Choices she had no control over, bad choices that she made, and internet hate have colored her perception of herself. It is truly beautiful to see Kennedy grow throughout the book! Ryan is the type of man that everyone looks at says, "that's a good man". He is the perfect guy! My dream man! He is selfless, kind, calm, genuine, honest, family oriented, and shares his true thoughts and feelings without reservation. Not to mention he is a doctor originally from Oklahoma so a complete southern gentleman! When Ryan unexpectedly finds himself taking care of his two nieces Ava and Mila he knows he needs a nanny. Kennedy is in a big transition phase of her life and when she finds out that a sweet four year old and hurting tween need help she is there. The only issue is going to be keeping things professional with her hot doctor neighbor who she is now living with.
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Kennedy’s point of view
– there is an age gap of almost 11 years between them
– a close relative (who we don’t actually ‘see’) is addicted to alcohol & currently in jail due to getting a DUI
– a character used to have cancer, but has been in remission for a few years now
Review:
I really enjoyed Kennedy & Ryan’s story! And I love how Kristin Canary wrapped up this series! I loved that we get to know Chloe (Topher’s sister) more in this story and I am so excited for her to be the first book in the next series Kristin is writing! I loved Chloe’s needling and advice given to Kennedy through out the story. I loved all the moments Kennedy had with Ryan’s nieces and how the littlest one immediately accepted her while Ava took a bit to warm up to her and her new living situation. I loved that Kennedy and Ryan didn’t have it all together when it came to working with the girls, but they learned as they went. Some of my favorite moments/scenes from this story included: an ATV ride & picnic, when everyone but Kennedy got sick, Valentine’s Day, painting Ava’s room, and bumping into each other in the hall.
Summary:
When Kennedy’s ex-boyfriend breaks up with her and defames her at the same time, she realizes that she needs to make a change or she’ll be stuck living off the goodness of her sister. She loves her sister, but Kennedy just isn’t that kind of person. So when she accidentally meets her sister’s cute neighbor and discovers that he’s looking for a nanny to watch his two nieces, Kennedy jumps at the chance to help out. After a few days of spending time with the girls, Kennedy is not only smitten with Ryan but with his nieces as well and can’t imagine being able to be around the girls all the time. Though with her feelings for her boss conflicting with those she should have for a boss, Kennedy is careful to keep things platonic between them, especially since she wants to stay as the live in nanny instead of the part-time babysitter she started out. Until Ryan starts to act unlike a boss and instead like a guy who’s interested in her. Could it be real or is Kennedy just making things up every time she looks at him?
Oh mylanta, I flew through this book because I needed to know how Kenney and Ryan would get their HEA. This is the last book in the California Dreamin' series but you can absolutely read it as a standalone.
Dr. Ryan needs a nanny and Kennedy is looking for another job to save money for college. It's a win-win all around...until their inconvenient but undeniable attraction to each other turns into feelings and things get complicated...
Besides the next-door neighbor and nanny/boss trope, there was also an age gap - 10 years - but please don't let that scare you away! Kenney is mature for her age and the whole thing was done so, so well!!!
What I loved!
Forced proximity Found family themes Watching the bachelor together Sweet moments of Ryan with his nieces Kennedy's relationship with Ava Ride-or-die group of friends The smoke alarm Lots of banter and chemistry The ER visit
And I cannot talk about this book without mentioning the epilogue...which literally brought me to tears. It simultaneously wrapped up the series so beautifully several years down the road as well as gave a sneak peek as to where the next series will take us and ahh, I am so excited!!!
Kristin Canary has become an auto-read author for me and this book is a perfect example of why! She writes characters with heart and depth in a sweet love story with humor and swoony kisses that make me sigh with happiness.
I'm telling you right now, this book needs to be on your TBR.
I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.
CW: There is a scene where he sees her in a towel but everything is kept decent! She also falls asleep in bed next to him while sick but nothing happens.
TW: Family member with addiction, controlling grandmother, brief mention of character with cancer
Are you looking for a sweet and clean romcom to steal your heart? May I introduce you to Kristin Canary then because she absolutely SLAYS those?
This one follows Kennedy, Alexis’ younger sister (who we met in Engaging the Office Enemy). Kennedy’s life has always been a little hectic, and losing her mother and being stuck with an assy primadonna grandmother, I dunno how she does it. Kennedy feels like she isn’t enough, especially after a breakup with her ex that leaves her feeling less than herself. She’s trying to do something with her life and to find meaning for herself while she’s still young (she’s barely in her early 20’s!!!). Enter the hot doctor next door who just so happens to need a nanny!
Ryan Rosche is the temporary guardian for his two nieces and he’s also an ER doctor, so with his work schedule, he needs help with a preschooler and teenager. So not only do we have an age gap, forced proximity because she moves in, we also have forbidden because they want to keep it professional for the sake of the kids and to not prove her grandmother right.
With all of that said, there is such a slowburn where you just want them to kiss or hug or interact!! And that’s okay!! But I truly wish we would have gotten more. More time of them together, more time with their interactions, and more time watching them grow together. Knowing that it’s the last in this series makes me sad because we won’t get that - but the epilogue definitely wraps up their story, as well as all of the other characters we saw in this standalone interconnected series.
Thank you to Kristin Canary for an ARC of this in return for an honest review!
