An Unexpected LoveTo complete her latest project, Annie Beckett must temporarily move in with gorgeous but forbidding Rik Magnusson-who lets her into his home, but not his life. Although Annie tells herself not to get involved, an unexpected kiss ignites a searing passion between them-and soon she finds herself longing to know his every secret.

When Annie breezed into Rik's life, challenging and teasing, he knows he never wants to let her go. And though she's been chasing excitement all over the country, he's betting he can convince Annie that what she's really been searching for all these years is right here, in his arms-because settling down doesn't mean settling for less, when the reason is love.

Michelle Jerott was born on 17 January 1961 in Wisconsin, USA. Her very first romances she ever read, way back in high school, were Kathleen E. Woodiwiss's "The Flame and the Flower" and "The Wolf and the Dove" (published by Avon in the mid-70s). She said: "I fell in love with Heather and Brandon, Wulfgar and Aislinn--and have been hooked on romances ever since. I like nothing better than to curl up with a good book and a hot cup of coffee, and romances will always be my books of choice. Unlike some authors, I didn't come out of the womb wanting to write books. In fact, from about the age of 14, I wanted to be an archaeologist."

Michelle graduated with a classical Archaeology degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and even attended a summer program at University of London's Institute of Archaeology. She remembered: "My first dig, in high school, was a Mississippian Indian site not far from Terre Haute, Indiana, and my last was a Roman fort outside Newcastle in Great Britain. There, standing up to my knees in mud and swinging a pick ax, I decided that maybe archaeology wasn't my calling in life, after all. A career fast track was fine and dandy, but I wanted to take the scenic route through my own life instead. So, I had a baby and eventually went to work in a research lab, which allowed me time to write. When I sat down to write my first story, I had no doubt it would be a romance. As a kid, I was disappointed that girl oriented stories rarely had the same sort of fun, excitement or dangerous adventures as the boy oriented stories. Consequently, I re-wrote a lot of those books in my head. As I grew older, I discovered the books I liked to read (and write) were those in which the heroine has all sorts of fun and excitement... and yes, even adventures, dangerous or otherwise. On July 31, 1997, after three years of writing and shopping my manuscripts around, I sold my first book to Avon. A couple days later, I won the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award for that same book, an award given to manuscripts written by unpublished writers. All in all, 1997 was an exciting year! Becoming a published writer has been a long-time goal, and I'm so excited to have this chance to make my dream come true. More importantly, I hope to share with you, through my characters and their stories, a little magic, a little fun, and a whole lot of romance!"

She signed her firts four books with her real name, Michelle Jerott, and later she used the pen name Michele Albert to continued a Series that started with "Absolute Trouble", her debut novel. Her novels: "Her Bodyguard" and "Getting Her Man" were both nominated for Best Mainstream Novel by Romantic Times and "Off Limits" appeared on the Waldenbook's National Bestseller List.

Married with a father of theee, Michelle lived with her husband, her son, his three children, and two lazy cats in a small town outside Madison, Wisconsin. She passed away on 5 July 2021 in her native Wisconsin.

This was another book I read because of a group I belong to. Michelle Jerott is Author of the Month at the Historicalromancechat group and this was the only book of hers I had in the TBR pile.

I liked it from the beginning. A freelance photographer contacts a farmer because she wants to take some photos and do some research in one of his fields regarding an army officer suspected of deserting during the 1832 Black Hawk War.

Annie is not exactly welcomed by Rik but once she gets there they decide to get along and she even rents a room at his house to be closer to the place she wants to study. Although they feel attracted to each other Annie is afraid of commitment and Rik still has to deal with his feelings regarding his ex-wife and his ex best friend she left him for.

The historical research is an added bonus for a history buff like me and it gives the characters the perfect background to get to know each other and start exploring each other feelings. Besides the first attraction it's sort of a journey of discovery and healing for both of them.

The cover is totally wrong for this book and this is a perfect example of "don't judge a book by it's cover".

In the end a really nice read, a B.

While searching for her family, photojournalist Annie Beckett finds information about a soldier who disappeared during the 1832 Black Hawk War. In search of the soldier's story, she goes to Wisconsin to Rik Magnusson's farm. Antisocial Rik reluctantly agrees to rent Annie a room in his farmhouse. They are attracted to each other, but neither of them wants to start something that they know will end when Annie is done writing her book.

Though the romance between Rik and Annie was interesting, I found the secondary story of Lt. Lewis Hudson more compelling...even if it was only told through letters at the beginning of every chapter. I'd never heard of the little-known Black Hawk War until I read this story. The author says a historical marker commemorating the Battle of Wisconsin Heights gave her the idea for the story. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

A pet peeve of mine is the cover art not matching the story. This one is really off the charts. While the story takes place at a dairy farm in Wisconsin, and Rik is said to be a tall blonde farmer, the cover shows a dark haired man embracing a woman. The pair both look like they are dressed for a night on the town...not ready to milk cows.

synopsis:
annie is a journalist who is chasing her next story, the disappearance of a young soldier during the black hawk war. rik's family has been on the land that annie is interested in for generations. although rik doesn't want anyone on his land or in his life, annie barges in and rearranges things. rik has scars from his marriage and subsequent divorce, and his teenage daughter doesn't really like him. annie has never known a home, since she grew up in the foster care system.

what i liked: that rik, in spite of being justifiably annoyed that annie just shows up, even though he told her not to, gets involved. i liked that he had no problem renting a room to annie, even though she annoyed him. i liked that annie still believed in the good of people, in spite of how she was raised.

what i didn't like: the fact that annie didn't take no as an answer.

It was a pleasant story. I liked it. Characters were good. Plot was pretty good.

Allie is researching the disappearance of a soldier from 1832. She comes to Rik's farm to further investigate the land and local sources of information. Allie was abandoned as a child and raised in foster homes. Rik's wife had an affair and left him. As a result, both Allie and Rik have trust issues with loving other people. The story is about half and half: solving the 1832 mystery and the development of the romance between Allie and Rik.

DATA:
Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: seven. Setting: current day with flashbacks to 1832 in Warfield, Wisc. Copyright: 1999. Genre: romantic mystery.

It was pleasant vistiting this book again after so many years. Although it is a little dated, such as the photographer heroine developing her own photos in a dark room (no digital camera in sight), heavy Birkenstocks with a long skirt, moustache-wearing hero and the teenage girls aren't texting constantly, the relationship is slow and easy developing. Really, the hero, Rik, is the star of this book. I just wanted to reach through the pages and hug him.

I adored this book when I first read it, about 8 years ago. The heroine is an author and photographer who comes to the hero's dairy farm investigating the disappearance of an ancestor of hers, which took place on that land some 150 years earlier. It's a very character-based romance, with the added interest of the historical mystery. I liked it this time, but there were elements which haven't aged that well, and I didn't love it.

this is a terrific story. Rik and Annie are people you would want to meet and know. I have an interest in archaeology so that angle added a nice mystery. Don't let the paperback cover throw you. This book is a classic case of don't judge a book by its cover. the cover is horrid and has nothing to do with the story.
