Father Lukefahr examines various elements of prayer as well as attitudes and misconceptions many Catholics have about prayer. The book takes a brief look at prayer in both Old and New Testament times, how Jesus prayed, and prayer that is uniquely Catholic. It also discusses current trends and ways of practicing prayer that are developing in the Church and in small faith communities. The text follows the outline on prayer found in the fourth section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church .
I read this book as part of a study group and found it very informative and insightful. The author has a very readable style, even using little anecdotes along the way to show that prayer can be serious without being boring. My only complaint was that the questions at the end of each chapter seemed sort of like an afterthought, only touching on one or two points from chapters with a lot of breadth. If you plan on using the book for group discussions, you may want to come up with a few questions of your own.
