Devil Springs #1

Kidnapped by the Vampire

When my great-aunt died, she left me her home and business in Devil Springs. The last thing I expected when I came to sell them was to meet an actual vampire–who happened to be the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen.

Or that he would kidnap me.

At first, I was desperate to escape but, the longer I was the vampire’s hostage, the less he seemed like a villain. Especially when he made sure I had anything and everything I needed and protected me from anyone who tried to hurt me. Even when I was doing my best to be the most annoying kidnapee on the planet.

The mouthier I became, the more he seemed to like it. He absolutely shouldn’t be boyfriend material, but the longer I was stuck living with him, the more I wanted exactly that.

But there are secrets in the town of Devil Springs and some supernatural residents aren’t as excited to have a human in their midst. In fact, one of them seems to want me gone…permanently.

A town of supernaturals!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🖤💜❤️💖
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎
Character development: 🤨😟😳😍

The heroine: Cari - her favorite and only great aunt Bethany died. Bethany was the Grandmother she never had. The sister to her real grandmother who died before she was born. Cari hadn’t seen her much in the years since she went away to college and her aunt moved to the town of Devil Springs and opened a grocery store, but they were still close. Bethany left Cari her store and her home and Bethany came to Devil Springs after the funeral, where she comes face to face with a Vampire named Daniel.

The Heroes: Daniel - Devil Springs is a town of supernatural’s and Daniel is the mayor. His friend, a wolf shifter named Garrett is the chief of police. Daniel’s main goal is to keep humans from finding out about the supernatural beings in his town.

The Story: When Cari mistakenly misleads Daniel into thinking that she knows about the supernatural, then immediately passing out after seeing his fangs, Daniel knows he has to remove her memories of what she saw. The only problem is that a witch named Bernie (her great aunt’s boyfriend), put a protection spell on her and Bernie left for a week to spread Bethany’s ashes. So he kidnaps Cari and has to keep her captive with him until Bernie can remove the protection spell and Daniel can make her forget she knows about the supernaturals in town.

“How can you not understand why I can’t let you leave? I’m responsible for every soul in this valley. If you leave here and tell anyone, we could end up with tanks rolling down Main Street and most of us either dead or caged and experimented on like animals. And it would be my fault for letting you go. Their lives, their blood, would be on my hands. I have a responsibility to all of these people. For their safety. Including your uncle!”

The story was good and I really like this whimsical supernatural town and all its people. Though I would definitely be asking more questions about everything supernatural if I were Cari. Daniel did say it was not good to ask people what kind of being they are, but I certainly would have been asking Daniel everything about Vampires and what each of the townspeople are.

I have read a few books like this before where there is a town full of different kinds of supernaturals and I really enjoy that trope. This one had a really good story and I can’t wait for the next book in this series. The only real criticism I have is that the story was told entirely from Cari’s point of view. I like it when romance books are told in dual points of view so we get to see the Heroes thoughts as well as the heroines.

Kidnapped by the Vampire just wasn't for me, although it started off well. I was drawn to the premise of a H who kidnaps a h to protect a supernatural town and they fall in love, but the execution of this romance was too shallow. The H is a vampire and mayor of the town and the h is a human whose great-aunt recently passed away, leaving her a store and a house. The H exposes himself (not like that) to the h and can't let her leave until her memory is adjusted to forget him. They have interesting back and forth sniping with being at odds over the whole "I'm holding you hostage" start, which I liked. The h is feisty and even though the H is firm in his belief that he's doing the right thing, he's trying to be careful to provide for the h and ensure she's as comfortable as she can be. Written in first person, single POV of h. No ow/om drama and neither were virgins (no sexual history I can recall though).

I thought that the forced proximity would quickly allow them to delve into their backgrounds and personalities, creating a strong bond, but unfortunately this book stayed on the surface for the characters. Very little info on either of them is given and while I liked them, I needed more to feel that their love was believable. Lots of lust and a fated mates feel, although I was never completely clear on that. There's a mention of soulmates later in the story but it was another point that wasn't developed enough for me. The few spicy scenes were good and I liked that they were slower to act on their attraction since the H knew there was a power imbalance present. The h is more of the pursuer on them crossing that line. He is a vampire and fangs are used during the steaminess.

A couple of other paranormal characters are introduced, who were also intriguing, and h's best friend was on page via phone contact only but appears to be the h of the next book. Alongside the hostage plot, there's also a side plot of a lioness shifter who's shady and her questionable son, but it's not resolved and I'm assuming it's an overarching plot that continues through the series. It felt unfinished in a perplexing way though because the lioness was making her conflict personal to the H. Some other inconsistencies and oddly placed internal thoughts also had me scratching my head at times.

The ending is HFN with an epilogue that's a chapter leading in to the next from the POV of the bestie coming to visit the town and of course, also seeing a supernatural exposed (this time, yes, that way). Overall, this can be taken as a quick paranormal read that's not going to be too deep with spicy scenes. Sometimes that's what you're looking for. I just wasn't and was more caught up in the potential to build more with the characters and story rather than the lighter fare that's at the core of this.

I've been an avid fan of C.C. Wood's books for many years, and I gotta say that this book was such a delight to read.

The story takes place in a town called Devil Springs, where the inhabitants are not all they seem to be.

The characters were great, and their bantering was very entertaining.
So much sass! 😎

But, the chemistry 🔥🔥🔥

Great story!
Great characters!
Great start to a new series!

I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

What a fun story. The banter between the two main characters will make you want to read this book in one sitting. Throw in the spunky best friend, who we only get to meet thru text messages, to make this series a definite must read. So many characters we need to know more about and so many things we still need answers to.

Dnf at 19%. I am reading a lot of bad books lately. Not that this is a bad book, it is probably good but I really detest the cozy vampire genre and also mashing up too many mythologies in one book. This has both of those things going on and I am just not interested in reading about baked goods. I have enough baked goods cravings of my own to deal with…plus this is boring. Might be for you if you like domesticated paranormal creatures just grinding away at regular day jobs and obsessing over coffee and pastries. Not my jam.

I love when CC writes about vampires. It was my love of vampires that brought me to her books in the first place.
This started out with a misunderstanding. Carina went to Devil's Spring after her beloved aunt passed away. Daniel is the Mayor of Devil's Spring. They meet when when he shows up at her Aunt's cottage. Carina says something that should have been a joke but Daniel took it seriously because well then he..... well go get the book and find out!!!! It's a wonderful story about love.

I'd like to be kidnapped by Daniel!!!

Kidnapped by the Vampire is an entertaining start to Wood's newest series.

I love how well she blends the romance, heat, humor and some suspense into this story.

Daniel and Cari definitely know how to poke & prod (in more ways than one) each other & it just makes this book all the more entertaining.

I really enjoyed how this book flowed - not too deep but not too surface level either. It was just the right amount of everything to keep you vested in the book.

Definitely a great read, especially for someone dipping their toes into paranormal romance. Or even a light yet enthralling read.

I was so excited to read this one, and it did not disappoint me.
I have been reading some incredibly in-depth, emotional tomes that have left me struggling to start anything new.
This book was like a breath of fresh air. It was light and fun. I flew through it in just a few hours, relaxed and entertained.
Cari's personality is so full of sass and snark that it made every interaction she had highly fun to read. Those interactions with Daniel were even more entertaining to read.
Overall, it was an easy, light, and enjoyable read. I am looking forward to the next book after the enticing peak C.C. left us with.

I devoured this light and fun paranormal read until late at night.
It's hilarious, has good banter between Cari and Daniel (a few secondary characters too), and the sweet and steamy moments are just the cherry on top for these two.
Cari is in Devil Springs after her aunt Bethany's death she just never expected that the hunky dark hair guy would kidnap her after a few jests or for them to be true. Suddenly she's in the middle of it with a vampire and giving him hell ;)
Can't wait for the Stela's and Chief Stoic's book.
There were a few pacing or editing things that bother me, but I think it was good.

This is a well written paranormal book with strong characters and an entertaining storyline, The author does a great job developing the story and brings not only vampires but also werewolves, witches and shifters. She moves the story fluidly with her descriptive scenes and delivers a terrific read.

As far as vampire themed stories, it's been a long time since I've read one, I love how the shock factor is written and the slow burn chemistry between these two. Devil Springs seems unique, I didn't completely grasp the dynamics but I do see the potential for the author to revisit this series. Lots of players, I would have liked a little more insight and details from his point of view. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kidnapped by the Vampire by CC Wo is the first book I’ve read by this author. I’m not a huge paranormal reader, but I enjoyed this one. This was also my first one with werewolves. This book had it all- vampires, werewolves, shifters and witches.
The back and forth banter between Cari and Daniel was good. Cari was sassy and I loved how she was quick to let Daniel know what she thought! And I loved the banter between Cari, Garrett, and Poppy too! I’m hoping for Garrett’s story next, from the epilogue I’m guessing we’ll see him with Sela!

Amazing

Kidnapped by the Vampire is an amazing read. I loved every moment of this one. Daniel and Cari are amazing together. There is amazing chemistry from the very start. Cari fits right into Devil Springs and it doesn't phase her much when it comes to witches, vampires and werewolves. Daniel may be mayor of Devil Springs but he's also a vampire who did not see Cari coming. I could not get enough of this one. I cannot wait for more to come in the Devil Springs series.

KBTV was an absolutely hands down hilarious, flirty, sexy, enemies to lovers( not really enemies), vampire-romance. Cari and Daniel’s chemistry was thru the roof from the very first time they meet… and it continues to grow with each interaction and the more time they are together. I simply loved everything book and could not put it down. (Im a sucker for vamp books…lol). The banter between these two characters made this so entertaining. All the spicy moments were off the chain HOT!!! If your looking for your next book, well you definitely don’t have to look any further!!! This is it!!! I’m super excited to see the next installment as I’m sure it will be just as great as the 1st or any other book my C.C Wood.

Before her beloved great aunt died, Carina Shelton had never stepped foot in the town of Devil Springs... and there just happens to be a VERY good reason for that...

Daniel Ayres might just be the worst kidnapper in history... but he simply can not risk any stranger coming to town and learning the secrets held by Devils Springs...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kidnapped by the Vampire was a supremely sexy and absolutely hilarious, enemies to lovers, vampire-romance, read! Cari and Daniel's chemistry was like fire from the very first minute they met... and then every moment between them continued to get hotter and sexier...
I absolutely loved Cari! She had an incredibly strong personality and the things she said never stopped being witty and entertaining. She had no problem going head to head with the predators of Devil Springs... especially the one who kidnapped her...
Daniel was anything but a typical fabled vampire. As an integral part of town, he will protect the secrets it holds, and work to keep the peace. But when Cari arrives, his existence is about to be flipped upside down...
I adored everything about this delightful and utterly addictive read. Cari and Daniel's banter filled relationship was just SO. GOOD. The sexy moments were super hot, their dynamic was so fun, and I loved the way that Daniel took care of Cari, even when she was "kidnapped".
This book was such a fantastic read and I am SO excited for what comes next in the already outstanding Devil Springs series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
The beginning is a wee bit silly, then it gets better then it finishes, with a huge amount of unanswered questions!!
Oh I really wanted to rate this higher, but a few problems with the book ruined it for me.
Silly spelling mistakes like: later instead of latter, I could have ignored. I can’t ignore the plot being wrong. There’s no one trying to kill Cari, for being human!!
Then there’s the bigger mistakes. It never really explains why when her auntie was so in love with her husband, why did she leave her business and house to her niece? Her niece who is human and isn’t really welcome in Devil Springs, as the town is inhabited with shifters etc. What happened to her aunties shop? She never reopens it so it just sits there?
The biggest mistake that ruined it for me was the ending. THERE’S SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS!!! 😡😡😡
When Cari is left her aunties business and house, she doesn’t realise that the town is full of shifters, wizards, witches and Daniel who is a vampire. When Cari makes a joke about vampires, (Very bizarrely.) Daniel takes her prisoner until she can have her memory wiped. As there is a spell blocking her mind.
Why has she got a spell protecting her??? Who did it???
As she’s a sort of prisoner at Daniel’s house, (She’s treat very well for a prisoner. 😂) they spend a lot of time together. So of course they grow feelings for each other, feelings that they both fight, but especially Daniel. In the middle of all that, Cari decides that she will punish Daniel, for kidnapping her. By doing scary things like hiding tv remotes. 😂😂😂
I was still enjoying this book till the ending. It never explained what will happen to Cari. I won’t ruin it for you but I will say it totally spoiled it for me!!! So much so that I’m not sure I want to read the next book.
The start of the Devil Springs series I can’t wait to continue with the second in the series a kidnapping and an introduction into a world that wasn’t supposed to remain fantasy. Carina has plans to only be in town to take care of her late aunt’s shop, home since her estate was left to her, she loved her aunt and needing a little courage to walk into the shop just to take a look around but even more surprised when a man shows up and not a normal man a sexy huge man. She notices him but when she falls, hitting her head and wakes up handcuffed to a bed in a strange room causes some panic. Daniel a sexy as all get out vampire takes notice when the beautiful women come to town, she happens to be Bethany’s niece, he knows immediately she belongs to him, being the animal he is doesn’t ask just takes who or what he wants, and so he kidnaps her bringing her to their new home. His plan wasn’t to take her, but he couldn’t help himself now he has some explaining to do to the beauty that is in his home not that he is going to let her go no matter how often she ties to escape. There is so much going on a she lion out for revenge of course he takes her for protection or so he claims the attraction can’t be denied and the banter between these two will have you laughing out loud but amazed by his patience with her no matter how she talks or treats him but will she grow to love him as he hopes, will she keep trying to escape her prison, will she realize there was more to her aunt than met the eye, will she stick around or high tail it out of Devil Springs, and is there or can there be happiness for a vampire?
This book, without a doubt, has the power to whisk you away to a realm beyond imagination. Every page turned was a delightful , leaving me utterly captivated from start to finish.
The author's unparalleled ability to describe each scene with an exquisite level of detail is simply awe-inspiring. As you read, it feels as if you are transported to the very heart of the story, an active participant in the unfolding events. The vividness of the imagery evokes a sensory experience that resonates deep within your being. Such masterful storytelling truly blurs the line between reality and fiction.
With every turn of the page, I found myself yearning for more, eagerly anticipating what lies ahead. The author's unyielding ability to amaze never ceases to astound me. Each chapter brings forth a new revelation, a new layer of intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat, thirsting for resolution. The way the narrative unfolds, like a well-choreographed dance, ensures that you are completely engrossed in the tale, unable to tear your eyes away.
It is with bated breath and a heart full of anticipation that I eagerly await the release of the next installment. This book has left an indelible mark on me, igniting a fervor for the next chapter of this wondrous saga. I cannot help but award it a perfect rating of 10 out of 10, as it has truly surpassed all expectations, weaving a spellbinding tapestry that will linger in my thoughts for years to come.
When Cari's great aunt dies she finally travels to Devil springs to see the property she has inherited and wonders why she has never been here. When she says the wrong thing and discovers a secret she shouldn't know this means she is kidnapped by the mayor.
Daniel is a vampire who has to keep the secrets of the place safe even if it means holding a woman until he can remove her memories of the supernatural.
He realises very soon that she is more than just a human.. She is something he must fight to resist. Cari is unaware of why she is so attracted to this man but she can't allow her feelings to shift for the man who has her trapped.
I loved this story and found myself laughing so much by the heated arguing and fighting between the two main characters. Cari is a strong, blunt and fiery woman who refuses to feel fear even in the face of something so much more powerful than herself.. Daniel is frustrated and that makes this book even more hilarious in that he can't react more forcefully. This is a story of romance, shifters, vampires, protectiveness, power, denial, love and mourning. From death comes the chance of something that could never be imagined and I adored every interaction which was skillfully thought up.
Wonderful Story . . .
I enjoy strong, sassy female characters who don’t back down and the female character will keep you laughing with her snark. When Cari Shelton’s Great-Aunt Bethany died, she left her home and a store to her in Devil Springs. To Cari’s surprise, she was immediately kidnapped by vampire Daniel Ayres who wants to keep the town’s secrets from outsiders. But he was so darned nice, caring for her, keeping her supplied with everything she needed, keeping her safe. She even tried to provoke him with a threat to attack him if the pizza he recommended was not as good as he promised -- but it didn’t work as she saw him holding back a smile and agreeing. But there could still someone who would want to kill her to keep their secrets safe. Will Daniel find out who it is if the danger is real? Will he stand up for her? And will she decide to stay in Devil Springs which suddenly doesn’t seem like a bad place to live?
Daniel has to be everyone’s favorite character, although Cari runs a close second. I couldn’t stop chuckling. He even acquired a coffee maker for her, even though he didn’t drink coffee. That is man I could easily love and respect!
Kidnapped by the vampire is a steamy, paranormal, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, and romantic comedy. I absolutely loved this book!! Carina (Cari) is a human who's Aunt has passed, and she has inherited her cottage in the paranormal town of Devil Springs. She does not know that anything paranormal even exists when she comes to town. Daniel is the hot vampire who ends up kidnapping Carina when he reveals himself to her after she unknowingly makes a joke about humans. While he kidnaps her, he treats her like an absolute gentleman and not at all like a captor. There are so many laugh out loud moments in this book. I loved the banter between the main characters and their chemistry was off the charts. It is probably one of my favorite paranormal romances to date. The characters and setting were well developed. It reads fast and has lots of steam. I can't wait for Sela's story! I want her with the Chief!! Great job, Author!!!!.
The plot has promise but I couldn't get past the fact that the writing just...didn't flow well? The authors tells us pretty much everything that happens, rather than "shows" us. Also, the writing moves from one scene to another very quickly and without (what I think are) important connecting lines of writing. I'm at a little over 20% and again, while the premise isn't bad and it has potential, there are too many good books out there to read one you don't connect to, and I just can't just past the writing style in this one.
EDIT: So I did end up finishing this one. I was too curious how it had such a high rating...I'll admit I'm still a bit confused. The timeline is basically only a week long from beginning to end, a lot of ideas aren't really explained in the book well, getting a page or so tops (what makes a mate here? What about a mark? Where are the answers to the typically questions that come with those concepts in these types of books?), and I still stand by my original criticism of the writing just not flowing well. The story is choppy, and tells us so much rather than showing us. I think the book had promise, and it wasn't bad, but I think it could have been so much better. It looks like the second (and potentially final) book in this series is about the BFF rather than a continuation of the original story, so I will likely be skipping it.
