A Book Apart #45

Wireframing for Everyone

Rate this book
Many UX techniques fall apart in the real world of overflowing backlogs, two-week sprints, and stubborn stakeholders. Yet wireframing persists, despite its much-anticipated demise. Wireframes are fast and easy to make, can be created and understood by anyone, and function as both creative ideation and practical communication tools.
Leaning on decades of collective experience, Michael Angeles, Leon Barnard, and Billy Carlson show us how to use low-fidelity design to generate ideas, encourage feedback, and involve everyone in the process. This approachable book also harnesses wireframing to demystify UI design, so that anyone can join in creating successful digital products.

I've been doing product design and development for a while and am fairly familiar with wireframing already. I recognize the benefits of wireframes and want to do more and do them better, which is why I picked up this book upon its recent release.

Upon finishing, I'm not sure I'm walking away with a whole lot of actionable ways to improve my wireframing skills. I did enjoy my time reading the book. It did support a productive exploration mindset I'm trying to be in right now (starting to work on a new product). However, when it comes to capturing a review, I would say it's a good book for beginners but lacks the focus of improvement I was looking for.

I use wireframes in my day-to-day job almost daily. And I've been using them for quite some time, starting with Balsamiq (version 2!) many years ago. So reading this book from my perspective, I felt that it is just scratching the surface of this fantastic topic. I missed deeper dives into various aspects of wireframing. But I understand it. For the broader and more general audience, it's an excellent introductory book into the world of wireframes. Also for anyone just starting to look into the iterative design process in general. It explores more general topics, like different UI controls, the importance of communication, or the fact that the wireframes are, in the end, mainly a (communication) tool and not the final product of the design process.

Another very helpful book from this publisher. Very valuable tips for everyday life, not only for designers, but especially for non-designers.
