A new collection of laugh-out-loud poems from the international bestselling author of Look Mom I’m a Poet (and So is My Cat)
Tired of Instagram poems about whiskey and self-love? Not Today, Satan (Maybe Tomorrow) is the hilarious antidote you didn’t know you needed, complete with crap drawings that make Rupi Kaur’s look like they belong in the Louvre.
From poignant odes to snack cakes (“The Last Temptation of Little Debbie”) to tough love for friends (“You are Not a Mermaid”), Shaffer’s biting satire will have you questioning why you ever wasted time reading lesser verse jockeys.
Andrew Shaffer is the New York Times bestselling author of more than two dozen books, including the Obama Biden Mysteries. He is also the writer and illustrator of the children's book, "Mothman's Merry Cryptid Christmas." He lives with his wife, novelist Meg Shaffer, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Not Today, Satan (Maybe Tomorrow) is the cutest little book of poetry and I don't even like poetry. Though, in all honesty, I'm not sure Andrew Shaffer does either after reading this. No wonder I enjoyed it.
This is not a book to be taken seriously. Just look at the cover and title. This is a book where the authors sole purpose is to make his readers smile and in that regard this was a success.
One of my favorites I'll include as an example and then you can decide if you want to spend 30 minutes of your time reading this:
review of "the subtle art of not giving a f*ck"
I have long been puzzled by this book - if you truly "didn't give a fuck," you wouldn't use an asterisk in the fucking title, would you?
😂
Humor is subjective so this may not work for everyone but it worked just fine for this snarky reader. 😉
Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Circle for my complimentary copy.
3.5 rounded up - WTAF did I just read???? Man, Andrew Shaffer has a very strange sense of humor and the drawings are quite... bad?? Quick read, irreverent, silly and very, very funny, it did bring a smile & laugh 😜😜😜
”All this beauty in the world, and he could not stop staring at her, wondering why she had pierced her anus.”
tw: vulgar languager, light spoilers, references to sex, (sort of) dunking on millennials & gen z
I kind of have a love-hate relationship with poetry collections, because they either are way too try-hard (looking at you gabbie hannah…) or they’re just some over-analysis that a pretentious English major would turn in for a grade. I like a balance between the two, so that it’s relatable enough but not too slapstick or cringe.
For the most part, I enjoyed this collection a lot. The poems made me smile and even laugh out loud at times, and it was really true to the little description that called the book something fresh for people who are tired of shitty Instagram poetry. Now. that felt like a personal dig, because I hate Instagram poetry that’s straight-up bad. Half the time it sounds like it’s written by a twelve year old that’s having these deep revelations for the first time and doesn’t have the right vocabulary to express such emotions. (Clearly I am speaking from experience here).
I do admit that at times this collection veered into Gabbie Hannah territory (sorry) but luckily for the most part the poems weren’t too cringe, and actually made me laugh and amused me. The drawings helped with this a lot; they were really funny and the mockery of the simple line work art sprinkled throughout shitty fake-deep poetry books was a good reference.
I think that this sort of “vulgar” and honest poetry is something that we need more of in the world. I’m sick of shitty Instagram poetry and stuff that’s just way too deep for what it really is. I want honesty, and that’s what this is.
Lastly, I just wanted to say that I too did not know that Flo Rida’s name was supposed to be “Florida” because he’s from Miami. It seems obvious, but I just never put two and two together. Thanks for educating me, Andrew Shaffer.
Thank you to Netgalley, 8th Circle, and Andrew Shaffer for the ARC!
From the gorgeous and sassy cover to the very final page - I loved this book! This is exactly my sense of humor and provided a mood booster exactly when I was in need of it. Really want to check out the rest of Shaffer’s poetry now. Thanks so much to IBPA and NetGalley for my e-copy in exchange for honest review!
Thank You to 8th Circle, Andrew, and NetGalley for providing this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!
A book of poetry where every single one is a hit?! Each had me laughing and or nodding my head in agreement, I now want to read everything Andrew Shaffer has ever written!
I know that Andrew Shaffer is 100% making fun of Instagram poetry and the stuff that is being churned out every five seconds from publishing houses like Andrews McMeel (which I do read), but some of this "comedy" felt a lot like the corny "jokes" I hear from my high school students all day long. It was giving- "I am an edgy and funny and cool because I know this is ridiculous," but it was all just cringe most of the time. While I appreciate that being the point, that doesn't mean I enjoyed reading it.
Do you think Ted Bundy is the Backstreet Boys of serial killers, not just the Nsync? If yes, then this one is for you.
You probably didn't think you'd hear the word splenectomy in a poetry book. And you also probably didn't imagine that someone would wax lyrical on the adventures of Smirnoff Vodka. And you also didn't think Andrew Shaffer would give the best writing advice.
Spoiler; don't.
Experience all that and more in this funny as fuck poetry collection by Andrew Shaffer, which is possibly better than Look Mom I'm a Poet (and So Is My Cat).

Not Today, Satan (Maybe Tomorrow) comes out on the 5th of September. For the measly price of $4.99 you can help reassure Andrew Shaffer's wife that there may be some money in poetry. Maybe not a lot because the book is also on Kindle Unlimited.
Do you thrive off being a sarcastic bitch like I do? Do you like poetry, actually scratch that…Can you even read?
If you answered yes to both of the above questions, you need to go read Andrew Schaffer’s newest collection ‘Not today Satan (maybe tomorrow). Not only is his sarcasm on point but his dark humor had me laughing out loud and smiling well I read the entire thing in one sitting. Remember my first question, well then you should know that me, being a bitch, means I don’t laugh and smile at anybody that much. The “but also fine if you’re into toxic human garbage” line sold me on this book completely…and that’s in the second poem! So I’ll also say that reviewing poetry was a bit offbrand for me but well browsing #Netgalley aimlessly, because I have an addiction and don’t need to add more books to my plate. I saw this cover and title and it’s screamed to me “this is your soulmate in a book, read me or die unhappy” I requested it(yesterday). I loved it so much I’m here trying to convince you to read it and cuz you know you’ll love it too. It’s very simple poetry, stylistically and easy reading level but for me poetry is all about an emotional and personal connection and this was it! Now I’m mad I didn’t ask for the horror poetry book egalley when I saw it. I didn’t know what my heart was going to be missing, now that I do I’m devastated!
This is on the side of not taking itself too seriously, poetry - memes territory.
I loved the cover illustration which drew me to it which was probably the exact purpose to be honest… I’ve been marketed to. This is like reading poetry which could equally be satirical social commentary that would be Twitter (sorry ‘X’) posts or memes with a kind of depressing twist!
I did find myself laughing out loud at points, it does have some basis of meaning but it’s not going to have you re-evaluating your life and finding deep meaning.
My favourites were: ‘I’m not crying, you’re crying’ ‘Happiness is just around the corner’ And I’ve got to say, not being from the US, reading ‘my 21st birthday’ and finding out about ‘Charles Entertainment Cheese’ nearly had me spit out my coffee.
‘In the twilight’ also a highlight. This is my sense of humour and I enjoyed it in a format that I don’t access that much - I think it does make poetry more accessible rather than it being something that is difficult to decipher and understand at times. I’m all for poor drawings as well, mediocrity is not celebrated enough!
Recommended! I received an arc of this book and this is my honest review.
Books don't usually make me laugh out loud (normally, but lately I've been picking some good ones, this one included) but this one got me multiple times! I know I'm not the only one who has noticed how ridiculous free verse poetry has become.
My favourite would have to be the Merchant of Venice Beach. Absolute hilarity from start to finish. A clever twist on the shakespeare with plenty of jokes and the perfect Shakespearean feel. Not all the jokes landed, but for me, there were more hits than misses.
This was so playful and yet has more literary devices and technique than some dead serious books of free verse poetry. What a fun and cheeky ride!
Thank you, 8th Circle and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I know this poem book is a joke, but some actually made me smirk. Some were just not good. I like that he likes cats. He touches base on common pop culture references. If you know you know.
I wouldn't call the humor deadpan, more silly/slapstick. I wouldn't say this humor is my kind of humor, but it may be just right for you! 2.5 Stars!
This is the type of poetry I want. making fun of everything and all the seriousness in the world and totally self aware. I finished this in less than a hour and I found myself laughing at each little short poem. I have yet to be disappointed by hus humor
I requested this based on the cover art and title, which after reading, doesn't really match what's written within.
It was a quick read. You can get through the entire book in 30 minutes or less. I knew going in that this was a book of "funny" poems, but it was not at all what I was expecting. Maybe Im not within the target audience for this. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy it at all. I didn't think they were particularly funny or clever. To me, they just gave off prepubescent boy who tried to write funny poems after watching a few episodes of MAD TV and thinking he's now a comedian vibes.
Thanks to netgalley for sharing a digital copy for me to read and review, as always, opinions are my own.
*ARC provided by NetGalley for me to review with an honest review*
Honestly, I didn’t expect to actually laugh at any of these poems. I’ve never read ‘funny’ poems before, but I genuinely laughed at most of them.
They’re not ‘inspiring’ like Rupi Kaur and they’re not rhyming like Dr. Seuss, but they’re really funny and a few were actually sweet. Also I loved the pictures, they’re reminiscent of Rupi Kaur, with the same one line style, but they’re all wonky and some of them barely correlate to the poems which is as funny as the poems themselves.
As someone who does really enjoy poetry, including Rupi Kaur and others similar to her writing style, or even more essay/story style poetry, I also really enjoyed this because it’s a nice change from other poems. Plus they’re quick, and just fun to read in a short period. I’d definitely recommend this to friends and will buy the book once it’s out so I can reread and flip through when I need a laugh or to show my friends.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley.
This is not your conventional poetry book and, honestly, I loved it. It's very different from what I usually read, and I didn't really knew what I was getting myself into until I began reading this book. It's very easy to read, you can read it in a couple of hours, and it's super funny. I'ts basically humour in the form of poetry. I enjoyed reading this book. I just wished it was longer. (It even mentioned Twilight, Backstreet Boys and Lana Del Rey, I loved it haha) Rating: 3,5 / 5 stars.
A collection of hilarious poems by Andrew Shaffer. This collection of poems of laugh out loud material that is not for the faint of heart. Packed with satire and adult humor sure to make anyone with a real sense of humor who enjoys poetry, sketched artwork, alcohol and strong adult themed humor this is the poetry book for you. My personal favorites were “ a few words of advice” talking about Spider-Man advice and “review of “the subtle art of not giving a f*ck””, his review of that is the same as mine! Great minds. Lol. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard reading a poetry book. This is a quick read, which would have been even quicker if I didn’t feel the need to read every poem out loud to my friends.
A few of my favorites were: In Twilight, Travel Advice, and A Few Words Of Advice.
This is undoubtedly a 5 star read that everyone needs to check out.
Thank you NetGalley & the publisher for an advanced copy.
A fun little book that you can easily zoom through in one sitting. I usually don't enjoy poems in this format, but I did have a great time reading this. Of course in order to enjoy it I think you have to go into it without much criticism and just enjoy the book for what it is. Also I have to mention that the cover is adorable.
I truly enjoyed reading this from start to finish—read it in one go. Not today, Satan is a poetry collection, which is funny and at the same time spot on with lots of different and great poetries. I’m sure even the ones who say they don’t like poetry will enjoy this as well. So good I want to read more from Andrew Shaffer!
Happy reading!♥️
I got this book for free from netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
I was seduced by the cover, but reading this collection reminded of talking to people who equate loudness with humor. Clearly it hit other people differently but this wasn’t for me at all. I’ll leave it at that.
I wasn’t really expecting to just sit down and run through a poetry book tonight, but I got caught up in this one. It’s a good blend of humor and observations, and every few pages you get a doodle to accompany a poem.
This kind of poetry is right up my alley. If you’re looking for a quick read, some laughs, it’s a good’un!
I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this book of poetry. I had never read a book of humorous poetry before and it was so fun and I was laughing the entire way through.
Wow what a trip. Super quick and quirky poetry book.
If you do read this, you might want to go in reading it with the mindset that the words are very out there and some will make you laugh, cringe, or drop your jaw.
A cute book with cute/bad little Illustrations. These are short hilarious and sometimes raunchy poems on topics ranging from relationships, Pumpkin spice, to Pop culture references, and even features some calligrams! It would make a really cute gift! 3.5/5 stars rounded up
Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Circle for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
