When 1940s gumshoe, Vic Delaney, hires Jess and Libby to solve his only remaining unsolved case, he doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into.
John K. Tunny’s death has remained a mystery for good reason, but Jess and Libby’s special skill set reveals a lead that no one else found.
With the help of the lovable Leo and a long-lost friend of Vic’s, they track Tunny’s missing car into a painful past. Tunny may have been the first death, but he wasn’t the last.
Along the way, they’ll discover Vic has secrets of his own and to solve his case, they’ll have to unearth a secret he’s done everything he could to bury.
It's going to be a bumpy ride for Vic, but Jess and Libby give him more than what he wants. They’ll give him what he needs.
USA Today bestselling author A.W. Hartoin grew up in rural Missouri, but her grandmother lived in the Central West End area of St. Louis. The CWE fascinated her with its enormous houses, every one unique. She was sure there was a story behind each ornate door. Going to Grandma’s house was a treat and an adventure. As the only grandchild around for many years, A.W. spent her visits exploring the many rooms with their many secrets. That’s how Mercy Watts and the fairies of Whipplethorn came to be. As an adult, A.W. Hartoin decided she needed a whole lot more life experience if she was going to write good characters so she joined the Air Force. It was the best education she could’ve hoped for. She met her husband and traveled the world, living in Alaska, Italy, and Germany before settling in Colorado for nearly eleven years. Now A.W. has returned to Germany and lives in picturesque Waldenbuch with her family and two spoiled cats, who absolutely believe they should be allowed to escape and roam the village freely.
Oh boy!! This series just gets better and better. I really enjoyed book two and thought there was no way the author could up the entertainment factor but I was so wrong. This book is just delightful and had so much going that I didn't want to put it down. With new ghosts and characters introduced the story is packed full of humour and mystery. It isn't necessary to have read the previous books but I would recommend it because the characters are so well developed throughout the series that you feel like you really get to know and love them. There were several mysteries all connected to the one case but it never got confusing. A fun story in a great series by a very talented author. After following Jess and Libby around as they solved there last ghost case, Vic Delaney has decided he wants to hire the two Dames. The problem is Vic is dead and he wants them to solve the only case he couldn't solve 1942. His son still has the private detectives old paper work but he doesn't want them to have anything to do with him, despite the fact he can't remember the case. All he remembers is a missing car seemed important at the time. Can Jess and Libby do what he couldn't and find closure for the dead mans family? And if they do will it help Vic move on? Looking for the car turns up more questions than answers , including what went on between Vic and his son? And why does he want to fire them after just hiring them? At the same time thanksgiving is fast approaching and with it brings old friends and family to the table. Can Jess and Libby still get the case solved while keeping there not so secret ghost helping activities a secret? I would love this series to come out as an audio book, so I could enjoy the fun again and again. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntary left this review.
The premise is great. Characters can get to you some. The Eggs really bothered me early in the book, and maybe at parts in some of the other books. It’s like they lack to skill to read the room. It seems really selfish, like their wants are the only important ones, but then they do something like the birthday party that redeems them.
I could not wait to get my teeth into this book! The author again has not disappointed me at all it was everything I hoped it would be and more! The new characters she has brought into Libby and Jess's lives are all funny and entertaining. I don't like giving spoilers in my review but I can say if you like a humorous mystery with fun and frolics then you'll love this. And if you are a big Mercy Watts fan (see the authors others books) you'll notice a tie in to the Fabonacci family that I hope is going to be expanded upon in up coming books. Keep up the good work AW Hartoin and keep em coming....I need more!
Love this series. Characters are true to life and honestly one of the best feel good mystery series I’ve read in years AW Hartoin has once again created a group of characters that will keep me coming back for more episodes
After starting another book and getting 75 pages into it, I couldn't keep going. So I came back to where I knew I felt some comfort. Libby and Jess always seem to provide that comfort that I seek when I want a cozy mystery. They give that warm and cozy feeling that I seek when everything else in my life seems to be going crazy.
Comfort, plenty of questions and lots of yesteryear gave me everything I needed in this book. I loved this book with every page. I thoroughly enjoyed how much of a family they are and how willingly they are to help the people around them even if it isn't the most convenient for everyone. They make sure that they pull it all together. Even during the holiday. Jess and Libby along with Bev have got to be the strongest women I have seen in a cozy mystery. And it is definitely one of the things that keeps me coming back to this series.
Along with the mysteries within the mysteries. I love the town and the mysteries within it. I love being able to go within the town and see the new places and see who is in it and what new ghosts and ghost animals inhabits it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery because it was very complex and brought us back to a time that isn't explored often. A time when segregation wasn't just about the color of our skin, but the place where we originated. Murder, Mob mentality, War, theft and so much more ran the world's back then. But with the help from family there is always a way to solve the crime and find a way to make wrongs right again.
I'm really enjoying this series with each book getting more entertaining as the characters develope. Lots of hilarious escapades like the ghost chickens that made me laugh out loud. Also some lovely sweet moments that made tear up. Highly recommend.
I have the wonderful feeling that this series - Jess and Libby Paranormal Mystery Afterlife Issues – is going to continue to be just as entertaining and successful as talented author A. W. Hartoin’s Mercy Watts and Stella Bled series. And I am in for the long haul. If I can always have another A. W. Hartoin book on the horizon I will be one happy and satisfied reader.
The check has barely cleared from Jess and Libby solving their last fascinating case before they are off and running again. But a dead detective, a missing car, a wayward son? Sounds like pretty run-of-the-mill sleuthing. Except that their client is the dead detective, the car has been missing since 1942 and the son is the one who estranged himself and doesn’t want to be found.
Vic Delaney was a 1940s gumshoe and was unable to solve his last case. You have to wonder why he came to Jess and Libby, though, since he’s stuck in the 40s and doesn’t think those “dames” know what they are doing. He is constantly complaining, yelling, yapping, and popping in and out to tell them what else they are doing wrong. If he knows so much why couldn’t he solve the case himself, then? Libby and Jess press on, getting in trouble, getting in danger, and not getting much useful information from Vic. He’s already decided what they do and don’t need to know and how to solve the case; he just needs live bodies to do it for him. Not so fast. We have been around Libby and Jess long enough now to know they have their way of doing things and that they are P-E-R-S-I-S-T-E-N-T. He fires them. So what? He needs to be reunited with his son so he can move on, and they will not stop until they’ve done it. Vic’s got big secrets and doesn’t want them anywhere near his son. Again, so what? And away we go.
At this point in the series we’re already perfectly comfortable with the ghosts. Even have to stop and think sometimes to determine if someone is living and breathing or not. But even if we (and Jess and Libby and Mariah and Henri and Max and practically everyone in St. Seb) are comfortable with ghosts – now there is a case involving ghost chickens?? Didn’t see that coming.
Hartoin weaves in tidbits about ghost life (ok whatever) with daily life with family and friends. Max and Henri have become minor celebrities at school with their videos and the coming Christmas pageant. Mariah has made friends and they all keep the boys on their toes. Jess is happier more days in a row now. Libby . . . well, she’s still avoiding Derek but life in St. Seb agrees with her, too. Libby’s mom, Bev, is still there and that’s a good thing. An old friend of Libby and Derek’s shows up for Thanksgiving and that’s a good thing, too, both for the case and for his help as a friend. And those ghosts? Ghost “powers” are pretty interesting. Turns out they can’t all see each other but they can choose to look whatever age and state they were during their lifetime, they can be pretty smelly, and it seems that Leo (my personal favorite) can make Vic pop in over and over and over when he’s trying to pop out. I guess not just the handsomest man not alive but pretty powerful to boot!
As always, the plot is well developed and moves along smoothly, lots of mysteries within mysteries. Author Hartoin has the amazing ability in all her series to connect one event, and one character, to another and then another to make the most fascinating thread to follow. What seems to be unrelated ends up being part of this or that and is wonderfully tied up logically and satisfyingly at the end. Except, of course, when she’s saving it for the next book and keeps you guessing for a bit. It’s a giant fun puzzle, and while these books all work perfectly as standalones you really want to start at the beginning to follow that path of breadcrumbs.
The ghost chickens sideline makes sense and is an interesting case all on its own, and there’s a hint we might even see a ghost duck or two in the future. Libby’s almost-ex-husband Derek takes up more space on the page this time, giving us a little peek at what might be going through his head since he was there when Jess’s husband Hal died. Another expanding story to look forward to.
Thanks to author A. W. Hartoin for providing an advance copy of Old Friends and Fedoras for my reading joy and honest review. As always, no criticisms, no complaints. Well-plotted, well-written, well-researched (okay, fine, probably hard to do much research about the ghosts) – just well done and always a most rewarding read. I am still loving the “Aha!” moments when I successfully follow that thread or recognize someone or something from Hartoin’s other series. I recommend you read this entire series and everything else this author writes. You will thank me. I voluntarily leave this review and all opinions are my own.
I had some qualms with the first two volumes in this series, mainly that we never saw Libby's grief in any tangible way. I was given the impression that "Libby's a go-getter who literally never stops and can do anything!!" Libby just didn't feel totally real and relatable to me. Now this book totally changed that. There were several emotion-filled moments, but my favorite was
I also appreciated that Libby has moments of grief and sadness towards her marriage and the loss of Hal in this novel, more than were in the previous two. She felt much more human to me without dwelling on the sadness so much as to make the novel take a turn away from being lighthearted fun.
Like the previous two novels, the mystery was fun and interesting but I think what truly drives this series is the characters. We received a great new character in the form of "Scooter" McCloud who brought some background and banter back into the house. And A.W. Hartoin continues to flesh out our main girls. Now that we got to see more of Libby's heart, I am dying for some more insight into Jess.
At the rate that these are coming out, I hope to see another novel soon. This cast of characters is addicting and I am dying to see the Christmas pageant that The Eggs are working on. I've officially bought in to this series and can't wait to see what happens next!
Ok, I’m officially hooked on this addictive series. OLD FRIENDS AND FEDORAS continues right after the last book, with duo Jess and Libby trying to solve the Tunny mystery for ghost-gumshoe Vic Delaney. The problem is, the more they delve into the mystery, the more they learn about Vic’s mysterious past which he wants to keep secret. And so another mystery presents itself.
I appreciated that one unsolved ghost sighting from the previous books was continued in this one, finally with a resolution. And the new ghost chickens side story was a hoot.
Libby’s unresolved issues with her cheating husband, Derek, made a little progress during Thanksgiving. I really liked the brief and unexpected visit from Derek’s best friend, Angus “Scooter” McCloud, and hope to see him in future installments.
The writing is so compelling and the mysteries are multilayered. And Leo is always there to aid in their investigations.
I really love how this combined family has grown and evolved. I can’t wait for the next one!
Jess and Libby have been hired by a deceased private detective to solve his one unsolved case. While doing that, they also reunite him with his estranged son, who desperately wants to know who his mother was.
A second case involves 5 dead chickens who refuse to leave their former coop. The living chickens of the new owner of the henhouse are terrified of the ghost hens and their owner hires Jess and Libby to solve her problem. They do by finding a new home for the hens with the ghost (Elsie) whom we met on a previous case.
Libby learns from her friend McCloud (Skooter) why her husband, Derek, went off the deep end after the death of Jess's husband, Hal. I think we will be seeing more of the brilliant and congenial McCloud.
Libby's Sons (the Eggs) continue to win over the town with their creative and good natured energy. They have started up a party business and have a way of conscripting everyone to help them.
"One flew up to roost on the back seat, and I got to see her being picked up and put back in the cargo area. At least, that’s what it looked like. It should’ve been creepy, but I was getting pretty immune to creepy."
4 stars Book 3 of the Jess and Libby Paranormal Series
I really enjoyed this book. But I must say it took me five days to finish the book. The characters are great. The plot was detailed and very drawn out. The chapters were long. All these items brought the book down to 4 stars. That leaves a full 4 stars of goodness.
I think it was reader error…not author error. I was in the mood for a quick read, but this was detailed to the max. Should I have done a soft DNF (did not finish right now)? I wanted to, but the plot was too intriguing to quit.
The author gave us a very satisfying end to this story even though it took five days to complete. And now, I’m looking forward to another book in the series. Fingers crossed we get one!
This book is by one of my favorite authors and I love all her books! With this one, You can so relate to Libby and Jess’s life because they have real world problems like death, divorce, a mortgage, kids and Murder! They live in St. Sebastian in a former funeral home and are friends with a few of the ghosts lingering around. One former private eye has persuaded them to solve one of his old cases. It involves murder and an old Packard. The characters are so vivid and real. You immediately want to help and share in their discoveries. It will not disappoint! This is the third book so start at the beginning with Dead Companions. You will not be sorry you did!
I just can’t help but continue the series. This time you got ghost chickens, ghost ducks and an old 1940 murder mystery. We also get to meet an old friend nicknamed Scoot. And the infamous Derek shows up. Makes it even more curious to see what ends up happening. This time we’re celebrating Thanksgiving. And more of Libby’s life is learning about her ghost abilities. Did I mention her mom’s now in the picture which technically she showed up in the last book? The twins are doing amazing and thriving. Mariah also seems to be adjusting and just has a little bit of setback, but it is the first holiday without Hal. And though I should be sleeping, I am off to read the next book.
This was probably the best book yet in this series. I do wish there were maybe 70 or so. Well these two women one in process of getting divorced one a widow live in this big old house that used to be a funeral home with the under taker ghost. These women needed $$ so they started a detective agency. All the twists and turns of solving the crimes and everyday life with a ghost or more ghosts and kids make for a delightful fun read.
Jess and Libby are both on the case in this one. I really enjoy spending time with these women as they are clever and creative in discovering clues. Vic Delaney, a ghost private investigator, has hired them to solve his one unsolved case. Of course, there is much more involved as they find out. Plus it's Thanksgiving and Libby has to confront some of her personal issues in this one. A very complicated mystery that kept me turning the pages.
This series just keeps getting more interesting and intriguing. The lead characters are very relatable and the children fun. There is an interesting tie in to another series. The case they are working on is solved. But there are events happening that will likely lead to more books. Really enjoyed this book.

Book 3 in this series is another fun read. Libby and Jess take on a number of fun side adventures while trying to solve an old case for a very grump detective. The crossover into the world of Mercy Watts continues in this book, as do the crazy escapades of the twins. It was also fun to see more of Jess in this book. I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series.
Fun, addictive clean read, well developed relatable characters. I started the first book out of curiosity with no expectations and now I can't wait to see what happens next, the spelling/ grammar is a bit wonky - So be warned if that's a trigger for you, not that you'll care after the first few chapters, LOL!!! So impressed
I love this series, and this book does not disappoint. The cast continues to grow. The humorous situations continue to entertain (note the chickens on the cover). Libby's love life develops, possibly in more than one way. The ladies meet interesting people, some of them alive.
Where is tank and why is he not running the sentinel? I can't find anything saying that he left or anything that happened to him and I reread the end of the last book to make sure I didn't miss anything. Other than that the book's pretty good. Still don't like her husband. Still think he's whiny and doesn't deserve her or the kids. But it was funny
Full disclaimer, A.W. Hartoin is one of my very favorite authors - her books never disappoint. In this third installment of the Afterlife Issues series, Jess and Libby continue to work through their new normal in their personal lives, which aside from raising teens, dealing with an almost ex-husband, and the loss of another husband, includes a live-in ghost. Having solved ghostly mysteries in the past, they are now the go-to detectives for any other-worldly issues. Got ghost chickens keeping your live chickens from roosting? Jess and Libby have your back. Need to figure out what happened to someone who died 40 years ago? Longer? They have the persistence and back-up crew to figure it out.
I love how Hartoin combines forward movement in the character development while managing to create multiple, and sometimes intertwined, complex investigations. Never a boring moment in Jess and Libby’s lives or Hartoin’s story.
Binge read all 3 after reading a sample of the first. This is a great series that I hope keeps going because I love Leo, Jess, Libby, and the rest of the family. The mysteries are fun and the solutions are unexpected. Can't wait for the next one.
There is so much going on. The kids, thanksgiving, the husband, the ghost, the friend, and the case, the husband and relationship with Derek isn’t going well without communication. The case has to many ends due to the year. The family is known for secrets and time consuming events. I think overall Jess and Libby wouldn’t have it any other way.m
The book was good enough to keep me reading as much as I could at each reading. I enjoy the interesting characters and ghosts. How they some mysteries is interesting. However, I had difficulty understanding how they came to the wrong conclusion about the man whose death they were investigating. Basically, they couldn't do it without ghosts.
Good story line. Two middle-aged women discover they can see ghosts in a former mortuary they bought. It's not ghosts of clients either. This one resolves one storyline, but there are so many more. I loved the ghost chickens and ducks. Now I have to read the next one!
I love this series but this one was a bit hard to finish. Vince is an old PI from back in the day and a jerk of epic portions. Of all the characters in this series so far I couldn’t wait for him to be gone. On the bright side the girls help solve a decades old murder, bring some closure to a son and make some new friends along the way.

Jess and Libby never quit. That lands them on an unsolved case from 1942. The more ties they find, the more mysteries need solving. Add to that Thanksgiving, Libby’s ex- Derek, and old friends and it becomes fast-paced race to find answers including uniting a ghost and his son.
I am liking this series better with each book. The author is avoiding nearly all the aspects of the Paranormal Women’s Fiction enre that I find untenable and most of the aspects of the classic cozy mystery that bug me. This book added a couple of characters that I hope become recurring.
Book 3 is the best I have read in this series. All 3 books have been better than the previous one and the newly introduced characteristics are a great addition to the Murder mystery. I like the way the author has a main Murder mystery to solve and several other mysteries get solved along the way to the end. This is a must read book.
