Brahmaputra: The Ahom Son Rises - 1 by V. Vijayendra Prasad, Kulpreet Yadav
.
Staying quite near Assam I have heard some stories about the brave son of Assam that is Lachit Borpukhan. In this historical fiction, the authors pick up his tale and give it a new perspective. Starting with Lachit's mother's vision before his birth, his unconventional birth gives him a deep association with the deadly reptiles - crocodiles.
.
Chapter after chapter Lachit's life unfolds, as at the gurukul he meets Prince Chakradhwaj and in their friendly competition, they become loyal, inseparable friends. Together they will be a power to reckon with and shape the future of Ahom markedly.
.
The next and most significant chapter in Lachit's life is when he falls in love with princess Padmini and due to their immature activities, Lachit is banished by Padmini's father, the then Swargadeo. This event converges with the attack of the Mughals and the takeover of Ahom and also Padmini's being taken hostage.
.
The next part of the story is the after effects of the previous incidents and build up of Lachit's character, changing associations with Chakradhwaj, the war status in Ahom and so on, ending on a cliffhangar, denoting the sequel/sequels to come!
.
The language is very simplistic, making it very easy to read and personally, the book is pretty focussed on Lachit and his relationship, character etc and the story actually surrounds him. Being fiction as stated, the history I think has been inspired from and not focussed on but that takes nothing away from the pleasure of reading it!
