Valentine Kittens

Rate this book
Three Regency authors deliver a collection of stories in which kittens bring together lords and ladies of the ton.

Even Cupid sometimes needs assistance, and in this charming collection of brand-new stories from three of your favorite Regency authors, kittens lead the way to love!

“Belling the Kitten,” Jo Ann Ferguson
Jason Farraday is looking forward to the peace of a country inn after the dangers of the Penninsular War. But what he finds instead is spirited Amaris Woodward, a litter of lively kittens…and —as Valentine’s Day approaches—the realization that romance is much more alluring than solitude.

“A Tangle of Kittens,” Valerie King
When a leisurely stroll through the hills of Bath results in a surprising—and quite mistaken—kiss from a stranger, Anne Cassington’s world is tumbled upside down. Now, a fortnight before Valentine’s Day, finding homes for her sister’s kittens promises to be much less exciting—until the quest leads Anne straight back to Lord Marecham, and his far too tempting charms…

“The Birthday Kitten,” Cynthia Pratt
Johanna and Ramsay Dillon’s polite marriage of mutual respect suits them both until Ramsay brings home a mischievous stray kitten for his wife’s birthday. The irrepressible cat sets in motion a string of events that nearly leads to catastrophe—until the pair discovers that a sweet and true love for each other may be an unexpected Valentine’s gift…

Please note, this author also writes under the name J.A. Ferguson, Jocelyn Kelley and Rebecca North.
"One of my favorite memories is lying on the grass on a knoll on a late summer day and telling my sister stories I was making up," says Jo Ann Ferguson, who also writes as J.A. Ferguson, Joanna Hampton, Jo Ann Brown, and Rebecca North."There's something magical about being able to spend time with people you enjoy in your imagination. As a writer, I get to go with my characters to their time and place so I can share their adventures and falling in love for the first time…all over again."

She has had a few adventures of her own, including a stint as an Army quartermaster officer where she was the first and only woman in her unit. She still enjoys traveling to the locations of her books and learning all about those places and people. Researching her novels is part of the fun. Whether it's ghosts, calling cards, how to fire an antique gun, or traveling to a world that exists only in her imagination, she pays a great deal of attention to the details that delight her reader. She's even learned a bit of Russian, Arabic, Welsh, and a lot of Regency slang.

Her work has been honored with award nominations from Pearl, ROMY, Romantic Times, Rom/Con, and Affaire de Coeur magazine. Amazon Books chose her novels to showcase. And Romance Writers of America bestowed the two ARTemis Awards for Jo Ann's Zebra Regencies: The Counterfeit Count and A Christmas Bride.

Nonfiction also appeals to her, because it's where she got her start, seeing her first byline when she was twelve years old. She contributed to an encyclopedia of the English Regency period published by Garland Press. For all three editions of the New England Chapter's Now That You've Sold Your Book…What Next?, she has served as co-editor.

Believing in giving back, Jo Ann has served Romance Writers of America on both the local and national levels. She has served on the national board as president as well as a director and at term as vice president. For her volunteer work, she was given RWA's highest honor, the Emma Merritt National Service Award. She is also a creative writing instructor. She was awarded a Massachusetts Art Grant to teach creative writing and then established several creative writing courses at Brown University. Many of her students have gone on to publishing careers of their own.

She lives in Massachusetts, where her favorite hero—her husband, Bill—and their children and two cats. She's not sure which is the most spoiled.

A weak 3 stars overall.

First story, Belling the Kitten by Jo Ann Ferguson: 1 star. Did not like this one, especially its histrionic heroine. The story introduces her when her hysterical screaming disturbs the hero, who is also a guest at the inn. Even worse, the hysterical screaming is due to a kitten in her room who had scratched one of her gowns. I mean, really?? *smacks forehead* Trust me, it doesn't get much better after that.

Second story, A Tangle of Kittens by Valerie King: 3-3.5 stars. This was a cute story with likable main characters. I was initially a little wary of the plot line in general because both the hero and heroine were engaged to other people when first they met. However, in true Romancelandia form, of course the people to whom they are betrothed fell in love with each other. Oh oh, aaaaaand the hero's then-betrothed ALSO turned out to be the heroine's long-lost stolen-at-birth twin sister. Yup. YUP. Twins AND betrotheds. Kinda crazy, but still cute. The kittens in this story were very cute and helped to further the plot along, which I liked.

Third story, The Birthday Kitten by Cynthia Pratt: 4-4+ stars. This was the winner of the bunch for me. I reeeeally liked this story. This story focused on a newly-married couple who married for comfort and mutual respect. That all gets turned topsy turvy when the hero does something unheroic on the heroine's birthday, and, to repent, he finds a kitten to give to her for her birthday present. Take a mischievous kitten and a villainous suitor from the past, add in the hero's surprising discovery that he's feeling - what is this??? - jealousy, and you have an engaging and pretty well-rounded romance in the span of 80 or so pages. I knew this one was a winner when I was coming towards the end and bemoaning the fact that this book is traditional Regency - i.e., NO SEXYTIMES. *groan* However, there was a little teaser at the end that was REALLY cute: Heeeeeeee! Cute, right? :)

Read this for a book group reading challenge: "Read a collection of short stories". This Regency-era romance featured adorable kittens in each tale, uniting couples for happily-ever-afters, and were easy, clean reads, as Regency's usually are. Not a lot of depth, and a few historical inaccuracies, but these are more for entertainment, not teaching, so I didn't expect a lesson. PS: There's no violence or cussing, either.

The first two stories were okay, but the third was my favorite; a kitten helps change the relationship of a newly married couple, which is a bit different from the previous two stories (or almost any Regency romance I've read). Sheba, the kitten, is given as birthday gift, and the dynamic between Johnna and Ramsey begins to change--for the better. It was sweet without being overly sappy.

This one is part of a 'Regency Kittens' series, with each book containing 3 short stories. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves cats.

These were all cute and fun stories. My favorite was Valerie King's A Tangle of Kittens. While I was a little weary of the plot at first, I soon warmed up to it and it was a delightful story (the description on the back of the book is misleading though). Both Anne and Marecham are terrific and they have great conversations between them. The Birthday Kitten is next on my list and it was very sweet, loved both Johnna and Ramsey. Finally, Belling the Kitten was very fun, although not my favorite of the three, I found Amaris to be a twit at first. Love the cats in all the stories too! So cute! All in all a great little Valentine's anthology.

Want a small collection of clean, cute romance? This is a good one for that. I picked it up at the library book sale for $0.25 and it was well worth it. All three stories won't take a day to read. They aren't the best writing, but cute anyway. And if you like kittens, then you'll like this book even more.

This was a re-read for me. I had originally found this book at the library when I was in middle school. It took me a while to track down a copy that I could buy online and I am so glad I finally found my own copy. This was a cute collection of stories and I am looking forward to being able to re-read these whenever I want.

Three Regency novellas, set at Valentine's Day, and featuring kittens. I probably read this at least once before, but none of the stories were particularly memorable. Sweet and enjoyable, but not memorable.
