The New World Nautical #2

Beyond The Setting Sun

Follow Tudor mariners on a voyage to the New World! Perfect for fans of Conn Iggulden, Robyn Young, Alison Weir and Anthony Riches.

What lies over the horizon…?

England, 1580

Walter Raleigh dreams of the unknown lands that lie over the distant western horizon. He had grown up believing that if you journey too far you risk falling off the side of the earth. But now, intrepid mariners are telling stories of new lands, blessed with limitless riches that await those bold enough to claim them.

Raleigh’s patron, Queen Elizabeth is easily seduced by the prospect of amassing a great fortune for her war chest and agrees to finance his quest.

But the seas are unpredictable, and when his first attempt fails, he fears his adventuring days may be over.

Weaving tales of the legendary land of El Dorado, city of gold, Raleigh successfully persuades Elizabeth to grant him a charter to explore a passage through the Americas to the South Seas.

And this time, he successfully sets up a colony in the New World.

Virginia is born, in honour of the great monarch who sanctioned its creation.

But what dangers are waiting the intrepid settlers?

Will they find themselves in a new heaven – or a fresh Hell?

Beyond The Setting Sun is the second Tudor novel in The New World Nautical Saga Series – historical adventures set during the reign of Elizabeth I and beyond.

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.

Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.

Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.

David Field is published by Sapere Books.

A fascinating insight into the Court of Queen Elizabeth 1, and the machinations that went on behind the throne to gain her funding for expeditions into the unknown.
Walter Raleigh is at the core of this story and I still find it hard to believe that people were persuaded to set fire to leaves and inhale the smoke! Nevertheless, he realised that the ingredients of the smoke were somewhat addictive and he could benefit financially from the import of tobacco.
The tales of the unnecessary ruthlessness of the early settlers were quite shocking and appalling. It's no wonder that the early settlements didn't survive, especially as they were rarely provided with essential provisions from England e.g. gunpowder.
I can thoroughly recommend this novel to readers of historical adventure, and to those who enjoy tales of the early European settlements in North America..

This expands the Tudor adventure of Pirates and Patriots, Book 1 of the saga. This time following Walter Raleigh and the dangerous dream of establishing England’s first colonies in the New World. Blending sea voyages, court politics, and survival against impossible odds, the novel captures both the ambition and recklessness of Elizabethan expansion.
This was fast-paced and rich in historical detail, it’s an engaging continuation that shows exploration not as glory, but as risk, hardship, and obsession. At times the pace was slow and the narrative suffered as the story progressed.
Overall: Still a brisk read, action packed and keeping to the momentum of the saga.

Another excellent a count of maritime history and the first settlers of America. By the English one that is not all good in the way in which as a nation we treated the natives of these lands. But for the times in the human race time scale was probably the normal for all race's of this world. Just like in today's time people of different nationalities or ways of lifes have fears of each other. But some of the people from different countries or religions do manage to get along. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Behind the mystery of Jamestown

The author takes a brutally objective view of the English crown and nobles of the Elizabethian era as they manipulate each other as well as Spain and France and other European powers of that time as they exploit the New World. It is a novel, a historical fiction of the early settling of the Atlantic coast. It's an interesting read as one person's interpretation of history.

The English colony of Roanoke, events leading up to it, and as any good novel what happened as an end piece.
Characters come to life in these books. There is suspense, intrigue, danger and a great deal of story development . Reader is fulfilled at the conclusion but on the edge of their seat until then.
