In his introductory text, poet and essayist David Shapiro, author of Abrams' Jim Dine and Jasper Johns Drawings 1954-1984, shows how the flowers contribute to a broader view of the life and work of Mondrian - a view that diverges sharply from the traditional reading of his artistic evolution. Many of the finest flower paintings - hitherto treasured by those who had discovered them in the form of stray postcards and other scattered reproductions - are gathered together for the first time in this book.
