This is my honest review of Wreckin Amethyst by Maddison Cole.
FYI there are plenty of book quotes in this review and there may be some minor spoilers. Also i had A LOT of thoughts about this book so .... long review, but these characters stayed on my mind which always tells me we've had a good ride.
~ Delving this deep beneath the Amethyst persona is dangerous
There are plenty of things to like about this book including a gutsy main character and plenty of potential for future adventures. I did experience inconsistencies that were immersion breaking for me; characters traits or actions not really matching their background or unrealistic things occurring to move the plot along. The book still delivers an entertaining read, especially for fans of Maddison Cole and the Candy Universe.
Amethyst
~ They’re personas. I’m a con-woman, not schizophrenic.
Amethyst is a practiced scam artist with a boat load of trauma. Out here faking it it ’til she makes it, she’s quirky,
~ I know a guy who can have a barrel of acid here in two hours.
She’s curvy,
~ Thats what a life of cheesecake for breakfast and giving no fucks gets you.
And she’s laser focused on her goal to destroy the rich men that took everything from her. In the process Amethyst is hellbent on serving sweet vengeance to those who don’t deserve what they have,
~ theres no version of this world where I’m giving some rich boy another amenity from his never-ending wish list. In fact, withholding it from him might just be the most amount of satisfaction I’ve ever felt.
There is a lot to like about feisty, confident Amethyst. Her train of thought is entertaining and her backstory does go some way to explaining why she is such a chaos magnet. Like many of the other characters however she swings wildly between extremes that make certain relationships and scenarios more convenient than natural progression. Amethyst escalates pretty steeply from singular hatred for the elite circles Myles and his friends run in…
~ Shrouded in blood shed, coated in revenge, they will know my face and fear my name.
…to being utterly besotted with more than one of them,
~ A pledge created by our bond. A vow cemented by our love.
Charley
Charley is a friend and somewhat protege to Amethyst. She is sweet and loyal but honestly, beyond that she is a bit of a nothing character. Particularly once Amethyst gets to the mansion Charley’s role is almost totally redundant and she is essentially written into storage. I don’t think she adds anything to this story, yet, although there is potential in future instalments for Charley to come into her own more.
Myles
~ Myles Hudson, the reformed sex addict who will no doubt strike again.
Myles is intense, tortured you might say,
~ There are many ways I’ve described my soul in the past. At peace, is not one of them.
A convicted offender and pampered billionaire, Myles becomes obsessed with Amethyst, relentlessly pursuing her across the city after an encounter at his jewellery store, with the intention to take her back to his mansion pretty much captive. Initially, Myles acts a little unhinged and crosses a bunch of lines whilst arguing with himself about not crossing any lines. However, as the book progresses, we learn more about his difficult past, which adds depth to his character, though it left me with questions about why his trauma informed early behaviours switched suddenly. Myles then quickly becomes highly deferential to Amethyst and appears submissive in a way that I found to be more saccharine than sexy. His apparent insecurity is inconsistent with his profile as a spoiled rich man. Myles gets points for being deeply thoughtful and supportive for most of the book as well as a good partner for Amethyst. I just wish it could have felt a little more cohesive.
~ I don't want you to belong to me, but I’ll do whatever it takes to be yours.
Carter
~ I know all about the stray you brought home. Caught her robbing your own jewellery store and thought - theres some wife material.
Carter is the grumpy, efficient childhood friend of Myles and fellow billionaire. Following the trial, he assumed the responsibility of overseeing Myles’ lifestyle and continues to rule over his friends life even now they are adults.
~ Its just the whole big bad gangster routine when I’ve just realised, you’re no more than a glorified PA.
Myles has an inexplicable, iron clad loyalty to Carter, despite their dynamics seeming like a whole-ass red flag, but I really struggled to find anything redeeming about him. We don’t learn too much about him, what we do know relates almost entirely to his devotion to Myles, and his extreme capability in his role however Amethyst is largely unimpressed by these traits:
~ Carter uses the same passwords as he does on the work computers
As well as this, his behaviour towards Amethyst fails to soften at all despite the declarations of Myles’ feelings. There isn’t much important dialogue between the men at all, considering that are lifelong friends. Carter acts well as a catalyst for a rebellious Amethyst but in the scope of Myles being the most important person in his world, its hard to believe that such little effort is made to either reconcile or remove her. I feel that subtle inconsistency of character makes it hard for me to form a relatable connection with Carter.
Sebby
Sebby is miserably in love with Myles, who reciprocates physically but will never be the one and only that Sebby pines for.
~ Does Myles know you’re in love with him?
He is soft and has a lot of feminine qualities, while I appreciate that about him I felt like most of his identity revolved around his sexuality and he mostly made a focused appearance in the story before a steamy scene.
~ “Don’t hurt him,” Sebby’s breath fans my back. "He suffers enough."
Sebby and Amethyst are able to establish a strong friendship as the story progresses and this did go some way towards giving Sebby a bit of depth outside of his Myles obsession, which I felt bordered on a little creepy in places. I preferred him after the confidence that Amethyst helped to bring out, which felt a bit more in line with his status as a billionaire and life long friend. As with the other billionaires, I couldn’t reconcile his extreme lack of confidence in his true self with the experiences he must have had to reach his current status.
~ Sebby only smirks, a rarity for his wounded-puppy vibe
Sebby, Myles and Amethyst enjoy some steamy scenes together, which were some of the best spice in the book. The spice in general was used sparingly but the scenes we do get are immersive and interesting. The MMF dynamic was a unexpected twist on the ‘why choose’ tagline, with Amethyst choosing to share Myles with others. It challenged my initial expectations of this genre and I am pleasantly surprised.
Owen
Owen has expensive tastes, he collects rolexes and custom trainers and forms an instant bond with Amethyst’s dog.
~ Owen decided his Rolex collection needed company.
Actually its difficult to think of Owen without also thinking of Pig as the pair of them become immediately inseparable. Owen doesn’t get much airtime in this book, so neither does this relationship but its clear that they are off living their own story. I hope that when we get to see more of Owen in subsequent books that his relationship with Pig is more than him continually finding other characters to take her away.
~ She’s with Owen, lounging by the pool
Pig
~ The blue and white English Bulldog is my one true love
Pig, Piggy, Miss Piggington almost has more nicknames than babysitters. She is a bit of an emotional support animal for our traumatised main character. Piggy’s endearing antics are quite entertaining yet her comedic potential seems under-utilised as she becomes more of a device to remind us of Charley or Owens existence.
~ Scooping up Pig along the way, I place the pup in Charley’s giant handbag
Whatever you think of the first instalment of this series, i am certain that Amethyst, Myles and the others are are bound for much more identity bending, luxury lifestyle and relationship chaos. A little more time spent with most of these characters will no doubt close a lot of the threads that still feel open. I think that the author has a long way to go to turn around some of the relationships if they are going to become believable potential love interests for Amethyst aswell, but I look forward to seeing them develop. The possibilities are almost endless.
~ Wherever you are turns into an adventure. And adventure is what my life is sorely lacking.
