To survive, Connor Magnuson must become a man with no equal.
The path ahead is a deadly one. His end of the bargains he made to get this far have come due, and his debts take him back to a homeland he’s been trying to forget. Kirkwall is an island of ancient secrets, and the magic in its soil will topple empires if he doesn’t get to it first.
His legend has begun to spread through the pubs, and others begin taking credit. Imposters pop up along the coast, and they threaten to undermine everything he has worked for. The deadliest army in history gathers in the south, stronger every day, and they’ve set their sights on him. The tides of this world will shift at any moment, and Connor is pushed to his limits. To protect what’s his, he’s forced to unleash the raw power that will consume him if he isn’t careful.
Enslaved dragons. A dying goddess. A path to immortality—or an early grave. Magic always comes at a cost, and this time, Connor doesn’t know if it’s one he can pay.
Boyce is known for action-packed epic fantasy, powerful heroes, and riveting magical stories filled with twists and intrigue. And, of course, a bit of humor sprinkled through it all. Pick up your kindle and get lost in the journey.
This was a solid third instalment of S.J. Boyce’s Wraithblade series. This series is an action fantasy set in a fairly dark fantasy world but one that never gets to grim thanks to having a few likeable characters and a tad of humour to lighten the tone from time to time.
This third book was mostly just Conner going on a few quests and building and growing his power. The same was true of his companions and his main enemies!
It was readable enough even if for some weird reason I always seem to take a while to get sucked into the flow of these books. Once I get sucked into the story I tend to find them fast paced enough. Which is impressive considering this tops 30 hours in audio!
I feel like this instalment did a good job of developing the dragons and the Connor/Quinn slow burn romance.
All in all a fun enough read.
Rating: 3.5 stars
Audio Note: This was narrated by Wayne Mitchell. I thought he did OK but can definitely see folks having a few issues with him. He was very melodramatic in terms of his performance style. He also struggled a bit voicing the female characters. He also read a tad slow so I got on better by boosting the playback speed to 1.25 regular rate. All that said, after listening to the guy for 90 hours over the course of this series I’ve gotten used to him!
The first 80% + of this book lacked the action sequences that made the first two books.
This entire book was dedicated to progressing a few parts of the overarching plot line to seemingly reach a culmination in the next book.
I enjoy the characters and their relationships, but felt like the majority of this book could have been heavily condensed and we could have pushed the overall story much further.
Somewhere in the arc of this story the author decided to go full-in young adult romanticism, losing all depth and sophistication. It’s superficial, predictable, and ought not have been released. Though I devoured the first two, I had to put this one down 20% in and won’t be picking it back up. It’s as though the author handed everything over to ChatGPT.
This book was very enjoyable to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who has read the previous two books. There were some interesting plot twists and developments that have me eagerly waiting for the next book. The way that Quinn struggles to reconcile the father who she loved with who he really was is a stroke of brilliance. However, there were a few plot and character choices that felt... off to me, for the lack of a better word. The choice to involve Zander's wife in the plot at all, for one. Another was to interrupt a tense, high-stakes scene with Connor having a flashback. Also, some of the internal monologues of male characters thinking about female characters were very far from realistic. There were also a few grammatical errors, although not at all too egregious.
Dear Ms. Boyce, I have been an avid reader of your works for some time now. The Wraithblade series has become one of my new favorites, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is on the fence about picking it up. Your writing has joined a select group of authors in my head who have me re-reading their books when times are tough for me. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for helping me leave my real-world troubles and pain behind, if only just for a while. I wish you love and happiness, and as someone who recognizes your talents, I hope they are rewarded as you deserve. Thank you for being a dedicated author, and know that if I am still around for the next release I will definitely be buying it.
I love reading fantasy and have read much over the years including classic authors like Tolkien, Jordan, Sanderson, Hobbs, Goodkind, Rothfuss, Salvatore, Brooks, etc. and so many of the lesser known fantasy authors available through Kindle Unlimited. This has easily been my favorite series in a long time! Fast paced and action packed but not shallow, imaginative, creative, and just a whole lot of fun! The plot is involved but easy enough to follow, and there are multiple fronts and characters where the overall story is continually developing, yet the story never really gets bogged down and you can easily follow the progressing story through the perspective of the main characters and protagonists. If you enjoy fantasy, give this series a try!
I started reading this series and haven't been able to put the books down. This one in particular continued to build on the prior two novels in the series. The story continued to fascinate me and had me on the edge of my seat. The words on the pages brought me in and ignited my imagination and I could see everything that was happening as I read it. It is a must read for anyone who enjoys reading or enjoys fantasy.
This book might be one of the best books that I in June. So many cool things happened in this book and I really enjoyed every aspect of it. Each the characters were so cool and the magic system is awesome as well. I eagerly awaited this book and was not disappointed. I can not wait to see what happens next in the book 4. I loved Connor, Magnus, Sophia, and Quinn so much, they are such interesting characters. Awesome book and I wanted to thank the author so much for this amazing book.
great book, I love how the characters have developed. I love the struggles Conner faces especially the internal ones, as he fights to be the man his father would be proud of and it's really cool to see him kind of deciding for himself what kind of man he wants to be. I love the introspection. the twists in this one are so fun. thank you for writing this book I cannot wait to read the next!
This book builds on the foundations laid in the previous books very well. It manages to deepen your understanding of each character, including the protagonist, without feeling like a filler, which many 3rd books do, unless they are the final book in the series. Well worth reading. I am looking forward to the next book!
Action packed! Connor begins to understand his role as leader, not just warrior. His fate will be a different one than that of his companions. He understands the risks, but how far is he willing to go to protect the ones he loves? I wont spoil things, the header for this review is all you get! Start reading, it’s absolutely worth it!
It's nice to read a fantasy book not written for a teenager.
The characters are brilliant and the storyline is intriguing. I like the difference between characters to use magic while others are physically repelled to use it as in Murdoc. Looking forward to the next installment.
Third book, first review. I enjoyed every page of this book. The story gets richer with each iteration and I’m a fan. The Wraith Kings audacity and Quinn’s heritage were my favorite parts of this story. Everyone character has issues and it’s refreshing to see that people and kings can change.
The first three books are well written with an engaging plot and many intriguing characters. The character development progresses evenly throughout the story and you come to love, hate or despise them as you learn more about their lives and motivations. I highly recommend the series and can’t with to read the next book.
Outstanding continuation!! This is a beautiful story, with amazing characters!! Soooo looking forward to the next book!! Very excited to see what happens! Stay strong an keep the amazing creativity flowing!!!🤩🤩
This whole series is great. It’s just really good fantasy writing that feels new and interesting. It has all the dragons, all the dungeons, all the dark magic. I love it.
As with books one and two, once I started reading Wraithstorm, I couldn't put it down! Great story and a great read. Thanks S.M. Boyce for my sleepless (in a good way) nights. lol. I'm so looking forward to book four!
Certainly well worth the wait👍 Totally gripping and entertaining from beginning to end, they certainly don't write them much better than this. Take as long as you like to write the next installment if you can produce another gem👍😊
Amazingly captivating with twists and turns that keep you reading till late in the night . I look forward to book four . The stage has been set to be an awesome finish.
Enjoyable story that has built the characters and world over three books. Looking forward to the next installment. The writing is a little off as the author doesn’t seem to have a solid grasp of correct wording and syntax.
Complex, sophisticated and non-stop. Quite an ongoing roller coaster ride of action and adventure. Great heroes and villains. Very frustrated book four has yet to be released. Many thanks to the author for this intelligent tale!
This book was the best by far!! Every twist and turn kept my interest for more. Anxious to start the next book, the Characters fascinating as they're all unique with their own purposes!!!
I barreled through this series. It was such a refreshing take on a fantasy world. I love the hero’s and I love to hate the villains. All I’ll say is that epilogue tho…
This adventure series is mystery within mystery, wrapped in more mystery. Then add an evil warlock, dragons, greed, honor, knights, and people just trying to do the most good for those they love and you’d have an awesome story. I loved this series.
Honestly not a fan of the "short paragraph" writing style used for this series, but that is about one of the only complaints I can think of. I greatly look forward to more of this Sage and hope the author is well with her health so that she can deliver more of this promising story.
