Voyages of Kaliban's Cradle by Matt Mememaro is a pirate filled adventure that follows King Davis as he takes on the persona of Captain Tornway in order to deliver precious cargo that is aboard his ship. His ship is attacked by the infamous pirate captain Reaves and his and ship, Kaliban’s Cradle. The story, set in a richly imagined world of swashbuckling pirates, follows a group of unlikable characters as they experience challenging endeavors. While the premise has promise, the execution leaves much to be desired for me, personally.
First, the novel suffers from a lack of character development. The protagonist, a seasoned captain named Davis, is a generic protagonist with a set of traits that never quite evolve. It was hard for me to invest in him or anyone else on the crew. The supporting characters, even the antagonist Reaves, are similarly one-dimensional. I personally don’t have to read likable characters, but I need some reason to root for them. I feel like they need to have some redeeming qualities or something that connects me to them emotionally.
Additionally, the dialogue felt stiff and unnatural, often relying on exposition to explain plot points rather than allowing the characters to reveal themselves through their actions or conversations.
I also feel like this book could use some editing. There were incorrect words within sentences: example “grim vs. grime.” Also, some word choice felt awkward. Example: “The ship rocked into the ship causing it to rock”. Honestly, this book just needed another few rounds of third party editing.
Ultimately, the novel has moments of promise, but they are overshadowed by clunky prose, lackluster characters, and a plot that never quite takes off. Luckily, literature is subjective and while this book didn’t work for me, it might for you. If you enjoy a pirate adventure that has all the pirate tropes, give this books a go!
A pirate voyage like none other. Captain Reave is on a mission to save his beloved home and his king. It is a race against the invading King Davis and his assassins. A world full of interesting magic that binds captains to their ships and allows fantastical creatures to possess revival stones. This is a real page turner to find out all the answers to what becomes of the Pirate King, Captain Reave and their magical ships. Captain Reave has no problem turning on those who betray him. The land of piracy is one of death and no mercy.

I was pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of 'Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: The Oncoming Storm' by Matt Mememaro. Although pirate stories aren't typically my cup of tea, the infusion of fantasy elements immediately drew me in. Mememaro skillfully merges fantasy and piracy, resulting in a refreshingly original and captivating narrative.
The story revolves around King Davis, who faces threats from both barbarians and pirates under the leadership of Goliath. Despite the peril, King Davis refuses to form an alliance with the pirates due to Goliath's involvement in his father's demise. Driven by a thirst for vengeance, King Davis sends his daughter on a perilous mission while he himself embarks on a clandestine voyage disguised as the commoner Tornway. Amidst a pirate attack, Tornway discovers that the pirate captain Reeves is immortal. In a desperate bid to save his crew, Tornway devises a daring plan.
Mememaro's epic pirate fantasy, 'Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: The Oncoming Storm,' plunges readers into a tumultuous maritime world brimming with action, magic, and the indomitable spirit of the high seas. The narrative centers on Captain Reave Reynolds, a legendary pirate caught in the aftermath of the sack of Port Nolls, as he endeavors to find redemption and a mystical relic to resurrect his fallen leader. With its brisk pacing, intricate characters, and vibrant imagery, this book promises a thrilling adventure for aficionados of pirate lore.
The Oncoming Storm, Book 1 of The Kaliban’s Cradle Series by Matt Mememaro, is an exciting adventure tale with a bit of fantasy! The cover is eye-catching and more than a bit creepy. (Note that there is a ton of killing in this book.) King Davis, who has an identical twin brother, Aaron, faces threats from the barbarians in Crotia, as well as the pirates led by Goliath. While Davis’s advisors want him to form an alliance with the pirates, and his brother Aaron agrees, Davis refuses with good reason; Goliath is the person who killed his father. Davis is so determined to have his revenge, that he sends his own daughter on a dangerous mission to bring Goliath down. Davis embarks on a voyage posing as a commoner, a ship captain named Tornway. No one onboard the ship knows his true identity. When the ship is attacked by pirates, Tornway and his crew fight back as best they can, but they are outnumbered. To make matters worse, Tornway learns that the captain of the pirate ship, Reeves, who idolized Goliath, is immortal, incapable of being killed with the usual methods. In desperation, Tornway proposes an unsavory plan to save the remaining crew’s lives. The writing was pretty good, although I encountered a number of mistakes that could be caught if the author did another read-through. This was an engaging, story but rather brutal (as far as the number of people killed).

Is an epic pirate fantasy that takes you on a wild ride across mythical seas. This first book in the trilogy is a thrilling blend of adventure, magic, and the ruthless laws of the sea, making it a standout in the genre.
The author's skillful world-building is evident in every chapter. From the bustling Port Nolls to the treacherous waters ruled by lawless men, the settings are vividly described, pulling you into the heart of the story. The incorporation of a magical stone that can raise the dead adds a layer of intrigue and elevates the stakes of Reynolds' quest.
Mememaro's writing style is engaging, with a fast pace that keeps the pages turning. The battle scenes are especially well-crafted, striking a perfect balance between diabolical action and strategic maneuvering. The gritty realism of pirate life is portrayed without glorification, yet there's a certain charm to the lawlessness that defines this world.
It's a book that promises and delivers a thrilling journey filled with action, magic, and the unyielding spirit of the high seas.
A well-written, engaging, and thrilling adventure set in a world of pirates and magic. This is the third book I’ve read by Matt Mememaro. They are light reading and packed with action, just right for my long vacation. This one differs from the first two as it doesn’t follow the usual fantasy line, but mixes magic with pirates. The story unfolds as a power struggle between a kingdom and an assembly of pirates. The captain of each of the pirate ships has special power that doesn’t allow them to be killed while on their own ship. This allows for all sorts of interesting situations. The story follows one particular pirate and the king of the kingdom. I’m actually not sure who is supposed to be the hero in this book. Both of them have good and bad in them and both of them do good and bad things. Whichever it is, there’s lots of action, particularly sword, pistol, and naval fights. I actually began skimming through some of them because they come so frequently. This is a “to be continued” book, so you’ll be tempted to get the next book.
The Oncoming Storm is a fun, magic filled book with lots of action on and off the high seas. As part one of the series, Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle, author Matt Mememaro begins building a world of pirates vs civilization, as we follow the book's two main characters. I found myself deciding on which character and side I wanted to root for, ultimately feeling like I would need more story to decide. Thankfully there are some more books in this series to carry on the adventures. I liked how not only did the book establish a world of pirates and swashbuckling action, but it also added mystery by the supernatural and magical elements. I also did not expect the brief but established bits of romance, as well as family lineage. If you are a fan of serious pirate adventures with some dark themes and lots of action, this is a good book to check out.
I very much enjoyed this action packed pirate adventure. The characters are endearing, the world and mythology are clever. I love the supernatural aspects and how they are weaved into the tale. I’m a sucker for this subject, the mysteries and magics, and I was not disappointed. The characters, their interactions and dialogue, were addictive. It was a hard book to put down and I look forward to the next installment.
The book "Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: The Oncoming Storm" by Matt Mememaro is, as always with Matt's books, well-written. It is a fast-paced and action-packed read that kept me engaged from beginning to end. Mememaro has a talent for creating complex and compelling characters that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I was getting to the end. I was breathing hard and THEN IT ENDED ??????? WHYYYY? I am not usually a pirate fan but this got me. The author is entertaining and often hilarous to follow on social media is how I stumbled upon this gem. Thanks, Matt "Meme"
The Oncoming Storm is a gritty, fantastical tale of pirates, betrayal, and action. The characters were well thought out and multi-dimensional. I enjoyed following Captain Reynold's journey. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the pirate genre or likes action-adventure stories.
An exciting, fast and different take on the pirate genre which contains more and better action than most novels in any genre. Looking forward to part 2
Embarking upon a literary odyssey through the tumultuous expanses of high-seas chaos, I recently plunged into a captivating pirate saga that encapsulates all the elements necessary to captivate aficionados of the genre. The literary work, unearthed under the moniker "Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest," unfolds a riveting amalgamation of kinetic encounters, duplicity, and sorcery, successfully ensnaring my attention right from the very commencement.
The wordsmith, Matt Mememaro, acquaints readers with an immersive realm where marauders, under the immortal captaincy of Reave Reynolds, navigate the perilous waters teeming with deserters, imperial forces, and formidable adversaries. The narrative unfurls with an impeccably calibrated intricacy, enabling readers to vividly conceptualize bustling ports, maritime skirmishes, and the mystical components that imbue an enthralling stratum to the narrative.
The personages, especially Captain Reynolds, are meticulously crafted and possess multi-dimensional personas. The impending storm of challenges hinted at in the title, propels the storyline forward at an unrelenting pace, interspersed with unforeseen twists and turns that compelled me to eagerly peruse each page.
The narrative style is immersive, painting a gritty tableau of pirate existence without romanticizing the lawlessness inherent in their domain. The author's adept world-crafting is manifest, and including a mystical artifact and an immortal adversary adds a distinctive flavor to the archetypal pirate chronicle.
In summation, "Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest" stands as a riveting maritime adventure that delivers on its promises of high-stakes theatrics, intriguing characters, and a captivating realm of unbridled seas. If you're prepared to sail on a thrilling expedition brimming with swashbuckling escapades and clandestine treasures, this book is your passport to an unforgettable odyssey on the boundless waves!
“Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest,” by Matt Mememaro, is Book 2 of a pirate fantasy trilogy. I previously read “The Oncoming Storm,” book 1 of the series. Be advised that this is a dark and rather brutal series. Book 2, which is not a complete story arc, begins right after the events in Book 1. King Davis had hoped to conquer the pirates, but his efforts failed. Rather, his home Asenfort, has suffered a devastating attack by the pirates led by Goliath and Reave Reynolds. They destroyed the city, and Reave killed the king’s twin brother, Aaron and almost succeeded in killing the king as well. Although King Davis does not have complete confidence in resurrected pirate hunter Forn Rask, he is left with few options after the attack, and agrees to send Rask after Goliath and Reave. Reave has the assistance of fallen pirate king Goliath, whom he had brought back to life, but must also combat Captain Greybeard, who has taken over the island Port Vera. Goliath had previously killed Rask and taken his ship, so Rask is out to get revenge and his ship back. Will the King’s Imperia forces be able to defeat Reave and avenge his attack on Asenfort? The cover is a great choice for the book: a pair of skeletons in combat, one in a pirate hat, the other wearing a crown. This series will appeal to readers who favor action adventure mixed with dark fantasy, fighting, and intrigue.
I borrowed Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest on Kindle, and it was an exhilarating read. As a follow-up to the first book in the series, it goes straight back into the chaotic world of pirates, dark fantasy, and high-seas adventure. I loved the story: Reave and Goliath’s journey had me hooked from the start, especially as they grappled with reclaiming the Dreadnought and fending off enemies like the relentless Forn Rask.
I enjoyed the read; what stood out to me was the intensity of the storytelling. I found the action sequences to be vivid, with the stakes being incredibly high. I appreciated the world-building; it is immersive, with Shornora’s dark corridors and Port Vera’s tense atmosphere practically leaping off the page. I found myself invested in the charax conflicts, especially the rivalry between Reave and Captain Greybeard.
I enjoyed the battles though I think the darker tone and gritty battles might not suit everyone, but I loved the raw edge they brought to the narrative. I could not but notice that the supernatural elements added an extra layer of intrigue; this and the twists kept me guessing until the end. Aside of book one, this installment worked surprisingly well as a standalone.
I enjoyed this read; if you enjoy dark, action-packed pirate adventures, this book won’t disappoint!
Is a thrilling addition to the pirate fantasy genre. From the first page to the last, the action never lets up, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The characters are vividly drawn, each with their own motivations and secrets that add depth to the story. Reave and Goliath make for a dynamic duo, and their quest to reclaim the Dreadnought is filled with danger and excitement. Mememaro's writing style is engaging and immersive, transporting readers to the high seas of Shornora with vivid descriptions and heart-pounding action sequences. The world-building is top-notch, and it's clear that the author has put a lot of thought into crafting a rich and believable setting for his story. One aspect that didn't quite work for me was the pacing. At times, the story felt a bit rushed, with key events happening too quickly to fully appreciate their significance. However, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise excellent read. Overall, Eye of the Tempest is a rollicking adventure that will appeal to fans of pirate tales and epic fantasy alike. I can't wait to see what adventures await Reave and Goliath in the next installment of the series.
I borrowed Weathered Tides on Kindle, and IMHO, it delivers a fantastic conclusion to the Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle trilogy. I think Matt Mememaro has a gift for creating immersive worlds that make you feel like you’re part of the crew, sailing through chaos and bloodshed. I appreciated how the stakes are high, with Reave grappling with tough decisions, and I loved how the tension between loyalty, betrayal, and leadership played out.
The pirate battles are relentless, and while I expected action, I was surprised by how deeply the characters' struggles resonated. I felt torn between their desperate choices, especially with Reave's lover and Quartermaster imprisoned—those scenes hit hard. Goliath's clashes with Forn Rask added another layer of intensity, and I appreciated how the Imperia loomed as an ever-present force.
Overall, I think the pacing was excellent, keeping me hooked while balancing character-driven moments with brutal action. For anyone who loves gritty pirate fantasy with strong stakes, Weathered Tides is a must-read. It’s a satisfying, high-stakes finale that delivers on every promise made in the series.
I was really excited when I saw this cover and read the blurb for this book, so much that I missed that it was the third book in the series and not the first. So it took me a while to get acclimated with the characters and the worldbuilding, but that is my fault, not the author's. Once I did get a feel for everything, I was able to appreciate the well thought out worldbuilding and attention to detail that the author put into capturing that pirate aesthetic.
The main reason to read this story is the battles. The descriptions of sea warfare are meticulously designed and quite exciting and have that "make the words disappear" effect. It gives you that classic Jules Verne feel, which not many books do.
I had a hard time finding myself connecting with the characters, but I chalk that up to my having not read books one and two. But since I enjoyed so much about Weathered Tides, I will go back and read the first two books of the series. I did enjoy Keelan and Gabrielle's dynamic. Their chapters were always a fun read.
Overall, this is a fun book and worth the read. But I do recommend you start with the first two books so you get some background info before going in!
I would describe Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest as a fascinating novel That doesn’t shy away from the brutality of dark pirate fantasy. The world-building is spectacular, the stakes are high, and the road to hell is paved with complex and morally profound characters. As a newcomer to this fiction genre, I wasn’t entirely sure what I would be in for, but I am happy to say that it was a fun ride. Felt like going back and experiencing the action and adventure of the old pirate films, and not just the Caribbean variety, though that was a vibe.
If I were to comp this for you, I’d say it was Black Sails and Pirates of the Caribbean colliding on the page before you. All the intrigue, darkness, and moral ambiguity of Black Sails with the fantastical elements of Pirates of the Caribbean to keep things from staying too close to the mundane. The characters worked well, too. There was a lot of nuance amongst them, and I was a little unsure who I should be rooting for—Games of Thrones in that way. I thought it worked well and would recommend that everyone check it out.
This book is all about pirates and their exciting adventures on the high seas. As a reader who thoroughly enjoyed diving into the high seas of pirate fantasy, I was captivated by this book from start to finish. Matt Mememaro's second installment in the series promises an exhilarating adventure, and it delivers on all fronts. The story follows two main characters, Reave and Goliath, who are pirates. They're trying to rebuild their pirate group after a big battle. But things get even more dangerous when they have to fight for control of a powerful ship called the Dreadnought. Other pirates and enemies are also after it! There's a lot of excitement in this book with battles between ships and fights with swords. Overall, if you like stories about pirates, action, and adventure, you'll love this book. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and you'll be eager to find out what happens next!
Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest is a rollicking pirate adventure from start to finish! This unique blend traditional pirate tales and paranormal conspiracies is a fresh take on the theme. Captain Reave Reynolds leads the crew of his ship through very perilous waters in an attempt to get his revenge. The world the Matt Mememaro has brought to life is rich with distinct and varied characters, grim and dangerous settings, paranormal monsters, and all kinds of other creations. This pirate action adventure book is a proper page turner that compels the reader through right to the gritty final page. I had a great time reading this book, and was swept away to a seafaring world of danger and adventure, thick with monsters, deception and deceit at every turn. If you're looking for a high concept, paranormal pirate adventure that takes no prisoners, is well written and is utterly fascinating, then look no further. Well done Matt Mememaro on a great story and book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest. It is the second in a series, but I found the storyline so engaging that I had to go back and buy the first book in the series. I have also read another book from a different series from this author and am waiting for the next installment of that series.
The pirate storyline is interesting. There were turns and twists that kept me engrossed. It’s not overly gory, but it's what you would expect from a pirate-type storyline. I really enjoy the author’s character development. It seems natural, not overly wordy, and it is easy to become invested in the characters you choose to root for (or against!) I would say that it falls into the dark fantasy genre, with lots of fighting, blood, action, and pirate shenanigans. I have not read the whole series yet, but if the author continued as he started, I don't think you will be disappointed.
I started reading the trilogy with this book. It's a fun and adventurous read, especially for those who enjoy this type of story and theme. It got me interested enough in the series that I would like to go back and read the first book then move on to the third book in the series.
Even though I started with this book in the series, I was able to just jump in and read it without feeling too lost.
I look forward to reading the others and curious to see if the author plans on writing more books set in the same world as this one. The mythology around pirates is always a fun atmosphere to visit. I can tell from reading this book that it is the kind of world the author enjoys writing about. There's always something haunting and mesmerizing about entering a world like this. This was a good recommended read and I'll be starting book one next.
Eye of the Tempest is the explosive sequel to the Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle fantasy trilogy by Matt Mememaro. I didn’t read the first book, but this one works very well as a standalone. Great writing and cinematic world building from the author to create a seamless sequel to the action of book 1. There is much at stake as Reave Reynolds and Goliath, the pirates have escaped Port Nolls on the powerful ship, the Dreadnought. Lots of action and adventure ensues as they fight for control when Forn Rask, the pirate hunter is on their heels to reclaim his long-lost ship. If you enjoy sword fighting battles and pirate adventure on the high seas this book is for you! It is not my favorite genre, but I enjoyed the exciting storytelling and wanted to see what would happen next. Highly recommended for fans of the pirate adventure genre.
Voyages of The Kaliban’s Cradle: Eye of the Tempest is the perfect follow-up to the first book. I like how it picks up right where book one leaves off. The characters continue to shine, and I’m especially partial to Reave. The adventure feels like a movie, with its twists and turns, great dialogue and fun interactions. The scenery, flagships, and supernatural elements are so much fun! I’m excited to read book three, but will be sad to see the end of the tale.
