Let's Talk Mutual Funds: A Systematic, Smart Way to Make Them Work for You

Rate this book
In the past two decades, mutual funds have emerged as the preferred investment option for Indians. They offer liquidity, and ease of entry and exit, along with potentially higher returns. This, in turn, makes mutual funds a natural choice over traditional investment options such as gold, real estate and fixed deposits.

However, while the popularity of mutual funds has increased in India, the ability to use them to our advantage has not. Investors are frozen by the choices they face with thousands of mutual fund options.

Bestselling author and India's most respected financial writer Monika Halan is back! And this time she's talking mutual funds. In easy, simplified terms, Halan demystifies mutual funds and shows you how to make the most of them. From managing your cash flow and planning your children's education to getting your own house and preparing for retirement, Let's Talk Mutual Funds sets you on the path to achieving your financial goals. I had pre-ordered this book the moment I came to know about it's launch. Monika Halan's previous book 'Let's Talk Money' was one of the best books for anyone who wants to learn personal finance management especially in the Indian context.
The big plus of her has been the way she tries to explain complex financial terms in a simplified manner to make the readers understand better.

'Let's Talk Mutual Funds' didn't disappoint my expectations. India is a market where mutual funds is one area where the retail investors especially from the middle class are hesitant to overcome their doubts and confusions. The thousands of fund options, the complex financial terms, the fear of losing money, the information overload online and the famous advertisement disclaimer 'Mutual Funds are subject to market risks' makes leaping into this area for the average conservative Indian a nearly impossible task.

The book has been well structured and takes along the reader step by step to gradually make one gain confidence about the benefits of investing in mutual funds. The author has explained about how the regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has taken many decisions over the years in removing the many fears of investors. She strongly makes her point on how it is terrible mistake if one looks at mutual funds only in the perspective of returns alone.

The author has once again reiterated the need for personal finance education for every individual.

I strongly recommend this book to those who are in their early stages of learning about personal finance. This book will also clear many doubts for those who are already investing in mutual funds.

A very generic book on mutual funds considering the experience of the author. If you know nothing about mutual funds in India or if you are a beginner investor, go for it. Otherwise, this can be easily skipped.

SPOILER ALERT! This book is not a guide to striking it rich. This has been one of the starkest realisation to me at least, that investing is not a tool to make a quick buck. Sad, I know. It's a long term process which when done right, leads to generational wealth.

The author has continued with her easy going and charming narration style, with a vernacular library from her previous book.

The greatest and the only selling point that you require to read this book is that it actually, real time equips you with tools and methods to choose the best financial tools to invest your money according to your financial comfort and aspirations.

Short term requirement, use debt funds. Retirement, likely use the aggresive equity funds. Standard Deviation is supposed to be low, Sortino ratio- high. These and many other sets of information can be applied to the products as to assess its quality.

While it certainly is a beginner friendly book, finance is certainly is more complicated. Concepts such as various ratios, effects of taxes, inflation and others on returns warrant a more deeper a read.

From portfolios building in various scenarios to monetary advices on various investment avenues, contextualised to India and its unique conditions, this book is your go to on Mutual Funds and how to approach it. Extremely excited to complete the trilogy.

Happy reading.

A very comfortable read. I especially liked the historical context added around the different fund categories and the cat and mouse game between the regularors and the fund houses.
Must have for someone who wants to understand more about MFs, and make sense of the large number of categories.

A great read! Having read Monica’s first book “Let’s talk money”, which served as a perfect base for this book, I must compliment the author for sharing her financial wisdom with the world in such a lucid format. Loved reading and learning from the book!

This is the 2nd book by the Author. If you have read the 1st one, you definitely have to read thus one. The book helps one to start our journey towards Mutual fund investment. Reading the book is like listening to a foody friend(joking), but it does assist us in shortlisting our strategy for beginner or intermediate level.
Definitely recommended. Along with 1st book. Hope to put into practice. Thanks again.

This is a good book for those who want insight into investing in mutual funds in India. However, someone with a fair knowledge of mutual funds and investing might find much of the content redundant to read.

The writing is also extremely informal and easy to understand, but it contains quite a few colloquial or pop culture references that many may not grasp.

Overall, this is an incredibly useful book for young Indians in the early stages of their careers and not well-versed in personal finance.

Simply brilliant the way Monica encapsulates the essence of MF investing for retail investors. I thought I had figured it all out after investing in mf's for last 16-17 years, but heck I was wrong I learnt so many insights & philosophy that I never thought would be possible. The language is lucid & so much engaging that it hooks the reader to the end.this is a must read book for all to understand the nuances of investing in mf & it's rationale.

Let’s Talk Mutual Funds is the sequel to the very enlightening and foundational book “Let’s Talk Money” by Monika Halan. As the title suggests, this book is both an introduction and a dive deep into the world of mutual funds in India. It provides a step-by-step guide for investors on investing in mutual funds at any stage of their life or financial journey.

There are a lot of similarities to its predecessor - easy-to-understand language, relatable examples, gotchas and lessons to learn, and the caring and considerate manner in which she disambiguates the complexities in mutual funds. There are also some differences; mutual funds are essentially a subset (albeit hard to understand) of your finances overall, and the jargon takes some getting used to. There are also hundreds of options, asset classes, funds, schemes, and so on that, despite the simplification, require double reading occasionally.

What one takes away from this book is that mutual funds are a fantastic instrument to grow one’s wealth, but understanding how they work, what purpose they need to serve, and planning them based on our needs are what actually provide value. Monika spends enough time covering the basics and ensuring we understand it before eventually providing us with a framework for investing and making the right choice. This book isn’t a get-rich-tomorrow book; it’s a get-rich eventually-by-making sound choices book.

There is still a lot of hard work left for the reader to go ahead and implement the suggestions provided by the author, but where the book shines is in helping us, the investor, be confident in our choices and make the right short and long-term decisions.

As someone who isn’t very financially literate, I found this an eye-opener, and I highly recommend it for youngsters starting their career and investment journey.

One of the best books on Indian personal finance!

Most of the best selling books on personal finance caters predominantly to the American readers. I was searching for a good book that educates on managing personal finance in India. This book and it's predecessor (Lets talk Money) perfectly fulfilled my quest.

Without any bias, the author has clearly explained about various pros and cons of mutual funds. This is a guide for beginners as well as moderately experienced investors to understand and execute mutual fund investments without any hassle. The writing is so simple without much fianancial jargons and any reader can easily understand the concepts (even if he/she doesnt have any prior knowledge on these topics). Though the title is about Mutual funds, this book explains a lot more including asset allocation and management, taxes etc.,

A good book will motivate atleast a minimal % of its readers to initiate the actions described in it and to implement them as part of his/her life. This book will surely do that for most readers and will help them to create wealth over long term.

A Must Read for sure!

A methodical breakdown of mutual fund mechanics that succeeds more as a technical manual than an investment guide. The book's strength lies in its systematic analysis of fund structures and operational details, though it occasionally oversimplifies market dynamics in favor of accessibility.
The examination of expense ratios and their long-term impact on returns is particularly well-documented. However, the book's treatment of fund selection criteria could benefit from more rigorous statistical analysis. The sections on tax efficiency and portfolio rebalancing present logical frameworks for decision-making, though some of the recommended strategies may need updating for current market conditions.
Where the book falls short is in its somewhat deterministic view of fund performance patterns. While the technical analysis is sound, the predictive elements don't fully account for market complexity. The chapter on index funds versus active management presents interesting data points but could benefit from more current research.
Best approached as a foundational text for understanding mutual fund mechanics rather than a comprehensive investment strategy guide.

Terrible book. Following this lady's advice has ruined my asset allocation for atleast the next 4 years or longer. I am a salaried person who used to contribute a minimum ₹1800 to EPF and stayed away from PPF. I used to invest some amount (around 5-10% of my monthly savings) in liquid funds and debt MFs. This lady gives advice in this book to stay away from debt MFs and use EPF/PPF as the debt portion of your savings. Unwittingly, following this lady's advice I increased my EPF to 12% of basic and started a PPF too. Now I have realised that not only am I putting money in a very longterm instrument with a low return which won't be available in time of need (which should be the whole point of your debt investments anyways), there is no reversing the EPF decision back to the minimum, unless I change my job which I don't plan to any soon. Choosing 12% of basic to EPF is forcing 32% of my monthly savings to compulsorily go into EPF. Not really a great asset allocation when there is so much inflation, especially in education, healthcare and housing. My asset allocation was better before reading this book than it is after it. Stay away from it.

Another very informative book by Monika Halan!

1. I now am able to shortlist funds
2. I am able to create portfolio for my own needs
3. I am buying a term insurance and my money box will be complete
4. I now understand different types of funds like equity (large, mid, small cap, mid and small, large and mid, multi cap, flexi) debt (liquid, FD’s, Money market, Banking & PSU, conservative hybrid)
5. I have a short term need of a car for which I will buy a conservative hybrid fund
6. I want to buy a house after 12 years and early retirement after 18 years for which I am going with Nifty 50 index funds now. Will mix it with some mid and small cap funds soon as I reach X rupees in portfolio (which will be next year).

PS: The bad part is, This is extremely beginner friendly. It has chapters on how to buy funds and how to choose a platform. This can make it boring for those who already have this info from youtube. So there should have been a TLDR. It should have said that those who already know how to buy funds can skip.

This book breaks down the ABCD of mutual funds and leaves you with a framework to identify which mutual funds to invest on. For starters, this is a phenomenal book but i would have appreciated more granular, pictureised and creative ways to explain the funds for novice people. If you have good basic financial understanding, this book is a cruise.

lastly, it feels empty without conclusions drawn from real life examples of good vs bad funds and what was the mistakes those funds made that dropped them down to where they are today. That would help us understand how to analyse real time data and make more informed decisions rather than going by just a constant framework. But i do highly commend the "don't fix it if it ain't broke" advice on the framework of picking mutual funds. Fantastic read.

My heartfull greetings to the author Mrs. Monika Halan for writing such a simple, easy and wonderful book on Mutual Funds.

My purpose for taking this book, and have a go through of it, is to know about the selection, investment and build-up portfolio of my own.

The best thing I've learned in this book is High percentage of Return means High percentage of Risk getting lose of money. Second 🥈, Investment means to resolve our financial problems which comes ahead in our life. In that times, we must have money in our hand otherwise there is no means of investing and wasting the valuable time. Third 🥉, for a naive in SIP, funds this is the best book 📚.

Take this book and retouch your investment.

It's the best book if you don't know much about investing (personal finance) or/and mutual funds. She explains the concept in plain English.
I knew lots of these things about mutual funds, how to select, expense ratio etc.. but still learned a lot of new things.
I had no clue about all things SEBI did to make mutual funds so easy and good (and helped protect the individual investors).

Thank you for writing such a great book. I loved and learned lots of things from the previous book ( let's talk money) as well.

I wish to read a similar book in the future around bonds (Corp, SGB, Gsec) as well :)

A book written on a simple language, easy to read for someone who is from non-financial background and wanted to start exposed to stock market through mutual funds. Book maintained its neutrality by explaining the process of choosing a scheme / category of MF rather than specifically marketing any specific MF house. Summary at the end of each chapter summarises the chapter in a effective manner. However, this book most of the time seems lopsided towards cornering the mutual fund industry as a whole and appreciating the regulator SEBI for all its initiatives. In a nutshell, a good book to read and can be completed in max 3-4 days (270 pages).

We all have been thought to save, save and save. however what is the good way to make it worth when you need it. What will be the value of that saving we have been doing ? , all explained well before starting the Mutual fund journey

it's very important to lean these tricks and tweak. which will benefit you in long run , when it feels it's not working in short term

and most of the unwanted Financial jargons are explained and ignored where is not needed

I would strongly recommend this book if you know basic math's operation like addition and subtraction.

I first read Let's Talk Money and I liked the style of writing. I was able to apply so much from that book in my personal finance planning. So decided to take a step further and picked up this book as well
Really helpful to understand about Mutual Funds and how they work. I have watched Monika Halan's videos too and really like the way she explains personal finance in a simple way.

I would say anyone who wants to learn about personal finance and investing in mutual funds should read both these books even if you have someone else taking care of your money.

The book summarises the emergence of mutual funds in India and current state of affairs wrt regulation, options, cost etc. I would rate it a good read for beginner or intermediate level enthusiasts trying to explore the mutual funds. Many of these aspects are already available in various platforms or source- this book can be considered as single source or compilation of all available information. I personally felt Her previous book “ let’s talk money” was much better work for everyone alike

Like the way how Monika carefully uses the words in this book, so simple unlike other finance people who throws jargon at us. Explanation were simple with examples, which makes it engaging otherwise I cannot sit and read finance stuff even though I enjoy for more than an hour. But to my surprise I did and I enjoyed, I would recommend GO SLOW with this book, there are too many concepts and ideas to instil. Also a section/Chapter dedicated to NRI investors would be have been great.

Good one, felt like a little too conservative I guess. May be that was for investors safety but I felt she was playing a little too safe. I mean after all, its a person's decision and responsibility over the funds or assets that one selects. I would have really loved to see some real fund names as examples. That would have made the book more practical than theoretical. Thats my two cents, and the author has all the right to write as she pleased, I respect that.

As someone from a non-finance background, I found this book quite helpful. The author explains complex financial concepts in simple, layman terms that are easy to understand. She even adds a touch of humor to make the material more engaging. She gives actionable advice which gives off kind-university-professor vibes. This book is a great resource for anyone starting on their Indian mutual fund journey and wants to understand the basics without feeling overwhelmed.
