Pain and regret can hold us captive. Our past mistakes and trauma tell us to blame others, feel ashamed, or turn to a temporary fix that often becomes a permanent escape. By the time Satan whispers we need to dress it up and call it home, pain is our new normal.
Pastor and motivational speaker Real Talk Kim has a message for the pain might not be our fault, but the healing is our responsibility. In You Gotta Get Up, Pastor Kim reminds us as only she can that staying stuck requires as much energy as moving forward. She explains how to get up and
figure out what needs to change in your life.unpack the messed-up thinking that holds you back.replace destructive thoughts with God’s truth.stop bleeding on people who didn’t cut you.stand up just one more time than you fall down. What will you choose today? The effort to get moving or the effort to stay stuck? A powerful blend of biblical wisdom and a loving kick in the pants, You Gotta Get Up calls you to heal, let go, and get moving . . . because hope is never too far away.
In You Gotta Get Up, Kimberly Jones helps readers to become unstuck in their rut and pain and to get up again and live their lives. She begins the book by describing how she chooses to look at pain, rejection, and sadness like it’s a disco ball. We can be broken into thousands of small pieces and somehow God can still cause us to shine. She shared how rejection is God’s way of taking someone out of our future. She explained how at 36 years old she had to move back in with her parents with her two young sons. She had no income and her marriage was officially over. She shared how she was traumatized by the incredible pain. She compared parts of her story to the Samaritan woman and how she was judged from being married five times and currently living with a man. She came to the well and met Jesus. He helped her to heal and have hope again. He provided her a solution to become unstuck in life. Kimberly explained how she felt betrayed and rejected as well. She was able to let go of her failure and she realized that her past didn’t hold any influence over her life. She was able to explore her own stuckness in life and figure out all of the labels that were defining her. She offered a new and special way to get free of our imprisonment. She encouraged readers to ask “and” when they are dealing with their fear. These included you got fired, lied about, got divorced. We can use the and’s to move forward. This was very powerful tool to use against worry and asking ourselves questions to overcome our negative voices. We can learn to remember that our identity is not found in whatever things that have caused our pain.
One of my favorite chapters discussed how we need to stop living the lies that others have spoken over us. Many of us have fallen for and believed them, such as we won’t ever be loved, won’t succeed, and we aren’t good enough. If we fail victim to the lies and believe them, then they can become our reality. Instead, we need to care more about Jesus says about us. God is able to work everything out for our good. She explained how she turned all of her messes into our messages to help others. She explained how if we allow another person to control and determine our worth then this becomes like a modern-day idol. We must always remember that God thinks we are wonderfully made.
I would recommend this awesome book about choosing to get up again and living your life to the fullest. I immensely loved how she included multiple different Biblical stories throughout the book to explain the message of the book. I liked how she enclosed a story in each chapter about how her message has changed their lives whether it be a podcast, speaking event, or Sunday message. She also included a declaration and a prayer to assist us in getting up. The most powerful lessons in the book that I related to was the label many of us wear every single day. We fall into the rut of hanging on to what people have spoked over us and the things we have gone through. It was astonishing to read about how she was able to find her own healing through the pain she faced in her life and surrender to God.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Zondervan for my honest review.”

Pastor Kimberly Jones was a guest on the Life Today program. After hearing her speak about her life, and new book, You Gotta Get Up, I purchased it. I believed there was something in it that I needed to discover for myself. Is there something from my past that I need to totally let go of? I'm hoped by reading what is shared in You Gotta Get Up would be revealed to me. I don't want anything to hinder God's great plan for my life.
I'm enjoyed this book. The author has a way of drawing her readers in. I love quotes. Below the title of Chapter 1 - Choose Your Hard, the author wrote Your life doesn't get better by chance, it gets better by change!
Yes, that has proven to be true in my own life. Pastor Kim has come a long way to where she is today. Kudos to her for showing others how to make positive changes in their lives too.
I found the best piece of advice in Chapter 4. "You can continually allow your past to dictate your present and your future, or you can determine it's a new season, a new day." Oh my, I'm ready to embrace the season I'm in, and allow God to work out the plan He has for my life. The past is gone, I want to enjoy the present and whatever God has planned for my future.
This book is just what I needed. Pastor Kim is living proof how God will transform the heart and soul of the person desiring change in their life, and for the better. Pastor Kim has well-chosen scripture verses throughout the chapters, plus a Declaration and Prayer at the end. She includes short testimonies from those encouraged by Pastor Kim and the Inner Circle group. The Lord is fulfilling His purpose for her, and I know He will do the same for me, and anyone else wanting God’s best for their lives.
This book has the potential to change lives and for the better. Pastor Kim openly shares what caused her to stay stuck where she was and how the You Gotta Get Up attitude pushed her forward. Chapter 10 is titled, How Bad Do You Want It? Yes, change is possible when we become willing to do what it takes to make it happen. It's clear Pastor Kim loves to help people become all God destined them to be.
Her message for her readers is: the pain might not be our fault, but the healing is our responsibility. This book is a must for anyone wanting to move forward but doesn't know how or where to begin. It's written by someone who has worked very hard to get to where she is today, and has the desire to help others in their journeys to become all God destined them to be. And those whom lost hope, will find hope again! Praise the Lord
Losing my mom to Covid paralyzed me. I was knocked down just as the book title describes. Reading is therapy, and I was searching for a book to provide spiritual inspiration. I purchased this book after discovering it on Amazon and began reading it as soon as it arrived. While reading, I heard RTK speak live. I loved her energy so I placed the audiobook on hold through Libby. I wanted to hear RTK’s energy and words of wisdom while I followed along and made notes in my book along with adding favorite quotes in my journal. It took several weeks from beginning to end and it was worth the time. RTK isn’t a traditional and passive pastor. She lays it out, and I love this about her. She speaks from the heart and shares her personal experiences with applicable scripture. I loved that each chapter provided prayer time with RTK. She has definitely inspired me to get up and to find and live my purpose through a meaningful relationship with God, which also keeps my mom alive in my heart. ❤️
This book is amazing. It has open my mind and has allowed me to make major changes. First by praying and putting my feet to faith. I enjoyed this and I love Pastor Kim. Great book.
While I think the author was well intentioned, a lot of Bible verses were taken out of context. I had a hard time getting into the book and quit about 1/3 the way through.
