From being a little girl in a village in China with polio to a tech executive at Apple, Libo Cao Meyers (曹力波) has had quite a journey in life—a journey steeped in rich family legacy and powered by determination, growth, and love. Over the years and the miles, she’s embraced her differences and has allowed no one—including herself—to set limitations on what she’s able to accomplish. But just because she’s been successful doesn’t mean it’s been easy. Not by a long shot. Along the way, Libo has overcome challenges as an immigrant in a new country, a person with a disability, a mother, and a woman in the male-dominated world of technology. In Limp Forward , Libo boldly shares her story—both the hard and the beautiful—so that you may feel seen, be reminded of your inherent value, and find the strength you need to face your own challenges in life. Every journey is unique, but Libo’s experiences contain insight that connects us all. Limp Forward is a captivating, unbridled exploration of the truths that guide us and shows what is possible when we pursue our full potential.
Libo Cao Meyers is an accomplished engineering executive who has been with Apple since 2011. With a passion for enriching people’s lives, she serves on multiple boards and is dedicated to creating innovative products and meaningful services that help individuals reach their full potential.
Despite being diagnosed with polio as an infant while growing up in rural parts of Northern China, Libo Cao Meyers refused to let her disability hold her back. At the age of twenty-four, she immigrated alone to the United States and achieved an incredible feat by completing her MS and Ph.D. simultaneously in two different engineering fields from Ohio University within four years. Her tech profession began in Silicon Valley in early 2004, where she has thrived in the culture of innovation ever since.
Libo’s determination to push through limitations extends beyond her academic and professional life. She completed a one-hundred-mile bike ride, battling wind for eleven and a half hours, and is pursuing a black belt in Karate to lead her young sons by example. Additionally, she is learning to use an exoskeleton to play various sports with polio, demonstrating her commitment to defying physical limitations.
Of all Libo has accomplished, she is most proud of her family, including the deep roots of the Cao family from China with 3,000 years of history. Libo lives in California with her husband and their two sons.
Libo Cao Meyers has hit it out of the park with her memoir, Limp Forward: A Memoir of Disability, Perseverance, and Success. She was born in China and was diagnosed with polio when she was eleven months old. It was human error that led to over 80 children being diagnosed with polio in her village. A nurse had overlooked providing the sugar cube polio vaccine to that community.
Libo is the 87th generation of the Cao family and has the Cao family history books that trace her lineage. Women who are born into a family in China are not recorded in the family tree since they don't typically carry the family name once they marry; however, women who marry into the family are recorded in the book. Libo was able to challenge and change that custom and have her name, along with her husband and two sons' names, placed in the family history record.
Perseverance is the primary incredible quality that Libo possesses in overabundance. Chinese children's stories have themes of resistance and perseverance. Her father and mother were both resolute in their quest for a better life. When Libo was born, she was raised in a tent. Once she was diagnosed with polio, her parents worked and saved in order for her to have several surgeries with the hope that her polio would improve.
The surgeries did not improve Libo's gait and she became determined to live the life she wanted and to achieve her full potential. In 1992, Deng Xiaoping, encouraged entrepreneurship, boldness, and wealth building. It was a pivotal moment for China and for Libo's family. Her father opened his own business and the family was able to move from poverty to middle-class wealth.
Libo constantly set aggressive goals for herself and created plans for achieving her BHAGs (big, hairy, audacious goals). Her powerful personal journey includes bachelors, masters and PhD degrees, immigrating to the US, working at startups, obtaining her green card, competing in a century mile bike event, learning karate, and continually learning.
Powerful passages include:
* When I am told no, I make my own yes
* I chose not to select the easy routes
* Life lesson: look ahead while still pedaling for the present
* Never forget what you truly want and keep inching toward your goals; keep moving
* View yourself as successful regardless of other people's opinions
* Timing can cause technology to succeed or fail in the blink of an eye
* A black belt is just a white belt who will never quit
* Comfort and growth don't go together
* Leap forward rather than limp forward
* My heritage is my fuel, shield and strength
Libo is an inspiration with her unwavering grit, determination and perseverance.
Some of the technical stuff she explained went over my head and sometimes my glazed over and I had to re-read but I still found it interesting or semi-interesting.
Libo is an impressive person. I am in awe of what all she has accomplished and everything she went through. I want to shake her hand and I hope she continues to crush it in the world.
She kept going with every obstacle in her way, kept trying different ways to achieve her dreams and proves her deserved to be there.
I took my time with this one and I think I enjoyed it that way.
Her parent's stories were compelling too. The perseverance of them all is just..wow to me,for lack of a better term.
I followed the writer on LinkedIn and obtained a copy, and I was greatly astonished by the author's experience.
From being a Chinese girl who became disabled simply because people forgot about the vaccine, to earning a PhD in the United States, and finally becoming an executive at Apple, Libo suffered due to the lack of attention towards disabled individuals. She experienced extreme difficulties while pursuing her desired Computer Science degree. As an able-bodied Chinese male, I have definitely not faced the same challenges on my journey, and it is truly a shame for society.
The achievements Libo has accomplished serve as an example of how immigrants accomplish in this country. Her story encompasses not only her disability but also the loneliness and culture shock she faced. She overcame all these difficulties by holding onto her family legacy, the Cao family. The history and stubbornness ingrained in her blood helped the author endure it all.
If you are seeking inspiration from life, this is the book you should read.
It's an inspiring and occasionally humorous memoir that deserves to be read. Reading about Libo's story and how hard she worked to get where she is made me appreciate the things I often take for granted. This memoir doesn't only enlighten you on Libo's experiences; but also the experiences of many other immigrants. After reading the book, understanding my immigrant parents' experiences was a lot easier. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and know no one will regret picking it up.
I absolutely loved reading "Limp Forward: A Memoir of Disability, Perseverance, and Success" by Libo Cao Meyers. Through her clear, concise, and witty writing style, Libo takes readers on an enthralling journey of her extraordinary life and her resilience despite the adversity she faced. A testament to human determination, this book is an empowering must-read for anyone seeking inspiration and courage. I especially enjoyed Libo's real-world examples and her insightful lessons from her journey in Silicon Valley. She truly pushes the envelope and, with her indomitable spirit, turns every 'no' she encounters into her own 'yes'. Her story is an amazing celebration of the human spirit and its capacity to overcome obstacles. "Limp Forward" is a powerful reminder that through resilience and determination, nothing is impossible. I highly recommend this book to anyone facing their own challenges and seeking a source of inspiration and hope. This inspiring book deserves a five-star rating and would make a perfect gift for readers of all walks of life.
Limp Forward: A Memoir of Disability, Perseverance, and Success by Libo Cao Meyers is a biography in which the author has penned her life experiences, from her birth in a small Chinese village to being an executive at Apple. During childhood, Meyers contracted polio, leaving her with a disability she still carries. I admired her determination and strong tone. I found her mention of ancestors and her ancestral book interesting. Such books, and similar records often kept by local temples and shrines in Asia, give more concrete proof that someone existed during specific times, and a name to match. I can imagine that being able to reflect upon your legacy in such a way could lead to reoccurring questioning of, “Who am I?”
''Limp Forward: A Memoir of Disability, Perseverance, and Success'' is an inspirational book that everyone should read. The author, Libo Cao Meyers, tells us her story of perseverance, her struggle to have a better life, and the obstacles that she experienced. The story of this book has the power to motivate people who believe that you have to have money to achieve your goals, this author teaches us that it is not necessary and that perseverance and hard work is the key to getting what you want. This woman is a role model to follow and she touched me deeply. I really want to recommend this book to those people who feel trapped and are looking for inspiration.
I wanted to get back to reading Memoirs, and I am glad I picked this up. I cannot even imagine what I would have done if I was in her place, however, I am certain, I may not have created the wholesome life she has. It was a really inspiring read, and someday I hope to read more from her, and perhaps even meet her. How lovely it would be to have people like her in your life and ecosystem :)
The strength of one woman. I’ve never met anyone as strong as Libo Meyers. Nothing will stop her from fulfilling her dreams and for fighting for what she’s entitled to. Even if that means leaving the country and her family behind. You will love this inspirational page-turner about the relentless strength of one woman’s journey.
What an incredible life and journey through challenge and adversity. Libo has an incredible story to tell and to be honest, I had no idea I would be hooked from the freezing cold tent in the mountains. Sometimes we struggle as Americans but truly we have no idea (most of us) what real hardship looks like. Libo showed an incredible journey and never missed a beat. Through life, challenge, family, and recreating who she is although she never lost who she was. Beautiful work and I absolutely recommend this memoir!
When I first saw that the memoir was 100k words long, I was hesitant to pick up this copy. However, after reading it, I can't put the book down. The author has an extremely compelling story about her life. Eventhough I have my own battle with the stroke, this author show me her resiliency overcoming her bout of polio at such a young age. I give it up to her for not allowing her disabilities define her just like my stroke. I'm also disabled on the right side and can't move right now. But I'm happy to use the power of my mind like this author. The anecdotes of her bike and green card inspired me to keep going forward like her book.
The story about her mom making sacrifices for her and her brother made me cry when they were younger. And the risk that the dad took in starting his own business shows me an incredible family who love and support each other, that's amazing!
The author mentioned her two best friends were Dongmei and Hongmei, both ending in mei. They are rare trees that ‘blossom’. I adore how she described her bestie. I'm sorry about Dongmei. Your friendship had me crying. She sounded like a beautiful soul. RIP Dongmei. I couldn't help having a roller coaster of emotions from reading this book. I wholeheartedly recommend reading it. It'll be a great honor to meet with the author Libo Cao Meyers and shake the author's hand as she inspired me. Thanks for all the level and attention to details that went into the book. I'm glad you are at Apple. You are a doctorate, PhD, alright. Your memories are impeccable, an inspiration figure for people who have a disability like me, and you are amazing! Bravo!!!
Lastly, I can't get the images out of my head that the dog ate your poop as a treat. It had me rothlmao, rolling on the floor laughing my ass off. Great job on writing the book, and thanks for sharing your intimate stories with the audience. You must be proud! Maybe a movie from this book, I love it!
I won this on a Goodreads give away. It arrived with a personal, handwritten message from the author, Libo Cao Meyers. I was hooked from the start. The author tells us her life story, starting with her polio diagnosis and living through poverty in China. She goes through life always having to prove herself, due to her disability. She rises above time and time again, partly due to her family support, but mostly her drive and ambition to prove all the nay-sayers wrong. She navigated cultural diversity, learns the English language, is an outstanding student while living in the U.S., and eventually lands a top paying job, finds a husband and loving extended family, and raises two children. She then shares her bout with depression, and learns to take care of herself. This is a well-written, wonderful and uplifting book.
This was my first ever book from the Goodreads Giveaways, and I’m so glad I got the chance to read it! I’m grateful that Libo Cao Meyers felt moved to share her story, and I was absolutely fascinated every step of the way (I especially enjoyed the feel-good love story we got a glimpse at in chapter eight!).
I’m hoping to continue to explore Libo’s story, especially in my classroom. I’m a composition instructor, and my courses focus on discovering personal values and identifying values in the voices of others. The introduction to this book is an incredible example, and it gives me an opportunity to add another new voice to my syllabus! This is a book of perseverance and determination that I highly recommend for anyone looking to read a meaningful memoir.
In Limp Forward, an engrossing memoir by Silicon Valley executive Libo Meyers, readers are invited to explore a rich tapestry of cultural insights, life lessons, and remarkable triumphs. Meyers, who has trained vigorously to achieve a black belt in karate, showcases her unyielding spirit throughout her extraordinary life. Her journey, which begins with a childhood struggle with polio and a sense of otherness in her school days, transforms into an inspiring tale of resilience and determination.
At the tender age of 24, Meyers emigrated from China to the United States, where she encountered a daunting wave of isolation while simultaneously striving to balance her employment, maintain her academic performance, and manage a plethora of other tasks. Her narrative further encapsulates the complexities of motherhood, the sting of professional dismissal, and the quest for love. These challenges, however, do not weaken Meyers. Instead, they fuel her growth, deepening her wisdom and anchoring her in a profound sense of self-assuredness.
Meyers' narrative represents the quintessence of resilience, interweaving the history of her resilient ancestry with her own indomitable spirit. As she recounts the trials and tribulations her ancestors overcame - war, famine, loss, and oppressive governance - readers gain a newfound appreciation for their own comforts, often taken for granted. Meyers' journey, however, extends beyond her familial legacy; it evolves into an awe-inspiring chronicle that readers will undoubtedly resonate with. Despite her battle with polio and limited mobility, Meyers ambitiously propels herself to achieve excellence in all facets of her life - physically, intellectually, financially, and socially, offering readers a soaring sense of inspiration.
Meyers' open-hearted recounting of her journey encompasses her internal deliberations, meticulously strategized plans, and the harsh criticisms she withstood in pursuit of her goals. This candid revelation is intended not merely to intrigue readers but to enrich their perspectives and inspire them to face their own battles. Her narrative further sheds light on pressing societal issues such as sexism, discrimination, the intricacies of the American immigration process, restrictive cultural norms, and other societal ills.
Limp Forward is a compelling narrative that invites readers into a whirlwind of emotions, from joy and pain to exhilaration and determination, all underscored by Meyers' strategic ingenuity. The book serves as a testament to a life lived fully and richly, making it a must-read for enthusiasts of culturally nuanced memoirs and narratives exploring robust social themes. Prepare to be captivated and motivated by Meyers' vibrant story in this highly engaging, thought-provoking memoir.
This is a very inspirational read. As an infant, Libo contracts polio and it effects the rest of her life. At times, growing up in China, her family faced poverty but eventually became well off. The polio left her with a limp and this affected how she was viewed as valuable in a communist society. She was not allowed to pursue her dream of a computer science degree in college and settled for a degree in chemistry. She researched and instead went to the United States to finish her education, where she received two doctorates, got great high paying jobs, married, had children and lives a life most can only dream of.
Despite the polio, Libo had advantages some can only dream of. She had parents that were 100% supportive and would sacrifice everything to see their children succeed. She was able to get scholarships for 100% of her studies in the US, including a living stipend, a lot of which she was able to invest. She used her education and school contacts to get a series of high paying, Silicone Valley jobs until she landed at Apple. She married a man who was well off.
The book ends with a brief history of her parents and ancestors. All in all, inspirational with caveats. A lot of people don't or didn't have the advantages she had, which really did help her succeed. It is hard to get top grades in school when you have to work full-time to pay for your education and living expenses, when your parents expect you to help around the house instead of spending the majority of your time studying. Many can't afford top collages and the type of contacts made there that can help you get great jobs.
The way she pursued her dream is very inspiring and will, no doubt, inspire others who read this book.

As a disabled woman born and raised in China and moved to the United States for studies, I found a deep resonance with this book. Around the year 2000, many people told me what I couldn't do because I am disabled, even though there were relatively well-developed disability laws in place at that time. The author attended school in China during a time when there were no such well-established laws, so her experiences were real and even difficult. I have no doubt that in the book, Libo couldn't attend her ideal university and study the computer science major she wanted because of her disability. Even now, some Chinese universities and specific majors reject certain students with disabilities because their disabilities "do not allow them to adapt to the major/school". However, at least such rejection isn't as brutal as it was in Libo's time.
I am inspired by what Libo has accomplished, and I can relate to her description of the loneliness she felt when she first arrived in the U.S., a sentiment I am currently experiencing. Libo is an exceptional woman, and this is a fantastic book. I was moved by the story of family legacy; however, I believe that more than family legacy, it was her courage and tenacity in the face of repeated questioning that shaped Libo's persistence and bravery to challenge.
If you wish to witness how a disabled woman from China overcomes numerous challenges to achieve success, you shouldn't miss this book.

Lioncrest Publishing and Netgalley provided me with a copy of Limp Forward for review:
Her journey in life has been steeped in rich family legacy and fueled by determination, growth, and love, from a little girl with polio in a village in China to a tech executive at Apple. Throughout the years and miles, she has embraced her differences and has never let anyone, including herself, limit her.
However, just because she's been successful doesn't mean it's been easy. Not by a long shot.
As an immigrant in a new country, a person with a disability, a mother, and a woman in a male-dominated industry, Libo has overcome challenges along the way.
With Limp Forward, Libo boldly shares her story-both the hard and the beautiful-to encourage you to see yourself, to realize your inherent worth, and to find the strength you need to face your own challenges.
Each journey is unique, but Libo's experience contains insights that can be applied to all journeys. A fascinating, unbridled exploration of what we can achieve when we pursue our full potential, Limp Forward shows what is possible when we do so.
The author, Libo Cao Meyers, tells her incredible story of growth and success in the field of technology in this fascinating novel. Meyers describes her experiences and challenges throughout her life. Meyers went from being a little child in a Chinese town with polio to being a high-level executive at Apple.
The book describes the challenges Libo Cao Meyers faced to become successful. Meyers has displayed outstanding strength and determination throughout her life, from the moment she moved to a new nation to overcoming the restrictions given by her sickness.
The fact that Meyers is a woman in the usually male-dominated area of technology is one of the most important features of her narrative. Meyers provides a unique perspective on the difficulties and opportunities faced by women in this industry thanks to her experience.
This is an inspiring and motivating story that invites readers to reflect on their own limitations and challenges. Through the story of Libo Cao Meyers, we are reminded that circumstances do not define our destiny and that personal empowerment can lead us to achieve incredible things. This book is a must-read for those seeking inspiration and motivation to reach their goals, no matter what difficulties they face along the way.
In her candid memoir “Limp Forward,” Libo Cao Meyers chronicles her extraordinary journey from a Chinese village to tech industry success while navigating challenges as an immigrant and disabled woman. Meyers’ writing shines most when conveying poignant cultural episodes, like her family’s perilous ocean voyage to America, illuminating struggles familiar to many Asian immigrants. While periods later in her career could benefit from richer detail, Meyers’ accounts of bridging disparate worlds as a disabled executive genuinely inspire. Occasionally the messaging surrounding adversity feels a bit simplistic. But ultimately Meyers delivers an uplifting take on realizing one’s potential despite obstacles, both internal and external, that hold many back. Most striking is her resilience, determination and compassion – invaluable traits she passes to her daughters. For readers who have encountered icy ceilings, Meyers stands tall as a pioneer who carved her own path forward. Her story serves as a timely reminder that no barrier need stop us from limping ahead toward our fullest selves.
Limp Forward: A memoir of Disability, Perseverance, and Success is part memoir, history book, tech info, and self-help all rolled into one. It is the journey of the author in overcoming the obstacles that life dealt her when she contracted polio at an early age. "But you can't do that," so many people and institutions screamed at her. Her response was always, "Just watch me! You're wrong!" Libo did so many things that she supposedly could not do - because she is ... Chinese, a victim of polio, comes from a family that struggled with poverty over the years. However, she continued to set and achieve goals, becoming the first person to achieve certain goals at her university even. The story that Libo recounts of her resilience and tenacity was inspirational in and of itself. She also includes some Chinese history as it relates to her family heritage, which added even more interest. I was quite lost in the section where she wrote of a lot of specifics regarding technology. But I found the rest of the book not only entertaining, but inspirational as well.

An excellent read!
This was a really inspiring and interesting memoir. I always enjoy learning about people who have different backgrounds than mine, and growing up in China, Libo had a very different childhood than mine, not just due to her polio. She is a very determined person, who sets high goals for herself and meets them, and looks for ways that she can mitigate the impact of her disability. I also really enjoyed the way she shared stories from her ancestors, as far back as her great-great grandfather, up to her father in current day, who is writing his own book as well. As a special educator, I also found it really fascinating to see the ways in which Libo has experienced discrimination both here in the United States and in China. I enjoy memoirs a lot and would recommend this memoir to anyone who also does!
"Limp Forward" reads like a blend of insightful life lessons and an intimate heart-to-heart conversation with a trusted friend. The author’s storytelling exudes an energy that lets me find solace and familiarity within the pages. Her fearless approach to life, marked by her enduring grit and unwavering determination, stands as a testament that surrendering to adversity is never an option.
I alternated between reading and listening to the audiobook. As I delved deeper into this rare gem of a book, I found myself in awe of the Libo's ability to weave her life's wisdom into a modern-day Tao De Ching. Within each chapter, her storytelling transforms into a practical guide for navigating the complexities of life. The audiobook, narrated by the author herself, adds a personal touch, making it feel like she was sharing her hard-earned insights directly with readers. I find this memoir to be a valuable life instruction book that teaches us how to thrive in this world.
Triumph Over Adversity. An amazing memoir and detailed family chronicle, enhanced with photographs. The author does not let her disability prevent her from achieving the highest of standards - these come at a cost however and are not handed on a plate The author has inherited a family trait of hard work, drive and determination, and also the work ethic of her parents - nothing stops them from progressing and bettering themselves. The book is also very motivational for all readers (whether disabled or non-disabled) and a great encouragement for all readers to navigate life's challenges with fortitude and perseverance. As a Westerner, reading this memoir was a complete education about life in China (both past and present) giving the reader an authentic insight into this fascinating country.
Growing up and completing college in China, obtaining a graduate degree in the US, finding a job in Silicon Valley, witnessing economic downturns and rounds of layoffs, worrying about the green card process, raising a family, and navigating mid-life crises—many first-generation immigrants in the Valley have followed a similar path. However, few have experienced the hardships that Libo has endured or achieved the level of success she has. Her unwavering determination and perseverance in pursuing her dreams set her apart. Through her experiences, I found renewed hope and motivation, reevaluating my own struggles and embracing resilience. I highly recommend this memoir to anyone seeking inspiration and a reminder of the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
This book is an amazing story of self-improvement and it talks about the importance of never giving up. The author of this incredible book named Libo, grew up in a village in Northern China and was diagnosed with polio as an infant. The future was discouraging for her, as she had to deal with the prejudice people and institutions have with disable people.
But she never gave up, she moved to the United States when she was only twenty-four, overcame every difficulty that came her way and today she is a successful woman worthy of admiration.
I love her writing style; she is very candid, and you almost feel like she is a good friend who shares her amazing story with you. I recommend this amazing book to anyone who is looking to be inspired and live their best life!

This book describes the countless obstacles the writer must overcome to achieve what many believe impossible. It´s very emotional to read all the struggles she faced in life and her challenging way from being an Asian immigrant with polio to become an Apple successful executive. It is a wonderful story and easy to read. The author´s autobiography is charming, captivating and really touching.
