For a proper lady of the ton and the improper lord she’s mad for, love becomes an adventure in a rapturous and romantic romp by USA Today bestselling author Christi Caldwell.
Alexandra Bradbury and Dallin McQuoid are neighbors who couldn’t be more different. She’s prim, mindful, and skittish of social improprieties. Dallin is slightly scandalous, boisterously charming, and unbothered by gossip. On an unexpected night of magic forged under the stars, they discover what they do have in common. Could theirs be a rare love match that might last forever?
But everything changes in a a death in the Bradbury family, financial ruin, and Alexandra’s betrothal to a wickedly wealthy marquess. Alexandra is expected to do what’s best for her family, regardless of her heart.
Until another crisis arises, and the dutiful daughter must embark on a journey with the waggish lord across the street to prevent a catastrophe for both of their families.
USA TODAY Bestselling author CHRISTI CALDWELL blames Judith McNaught's "Whitney, My Love!" for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and pick up her laptop to try her hand at romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before crafting them a well deserved happily ever after!
Christi makes her home in Charlotte, North Carolina where she spends her time writing her own enchanting historical romances, and baking surprisingly good cakes (almost 2 years in lockdown will do that) with her courageous son and twin daughters, each who with their daily antics provides limitless source material.
Book 3 of this series. Enjoyable read. Two people meet under the stars. Fall for each other. Then life gets in the way for the next year. Family members from each of their families run off together to Gretna Green. They both meet up again while following the eloped couple. And they join forces. 3.75 stars 🌟

A Sure Duke is the third book in The McQuoid's of Mayfairseries following the siblings of a pretty unconventional family of the ton as they find their matches. You do not have to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy this one. So far we've had one sibling accidentally left behind Home Alone style. Another who thought she was stealing away on her brother's ship only to find herself on the wrong one and now it is time for the Eldest brother's story. Dallin McQuoid wasn't really interested in marrying, that is until he had a magical night on the rooftop looking at the stars with his beautiful and apparently brilliant neighbor, Alexandra. They are completely different in everyway but that night was magic. Unfortunately Alexandra's father dies and it will be a year before they meet again.
Alexandra had dreams, ones that revolved around Dillan McQuoid and her coming out. But they are dashed when her mother informs her there is no money. Alexandra's Uncle has already procured her match to another man, one of great character and breeding but definitely not a man interesting in wooing his new bride to be. To him she is a business transaction and next they meet will be at the alter. Alexandra may be sad she is basically being sold to save her family, but she will do it.
One problem. Her sister has run off to Gretna Green to elope with a McQuoid cousin, if that happens the scandal will rock Alexandra's family and put all of their futures in jeopardy if her engagement ends up broken because of it. The only difficulty is Dillan is off to fetch his cousin before he makes a terrible mistake as well and their paths will be entwined until they catch up to the couple.
This is a fun story of two people trying to stay apart when they desperately want to be together. Alexandra is far too proud to tell Dillan about her families finances and Dillan is convinced all she was looking for was a title. As they travel the chemistry and banter between them is a lot of fun. Alexandra is not one to cow down to any and her pride rears its head more than once. Dillan, always felt trapped by his title and just wanted to travel and see the world. That was until he found an entire world in another person. This is romantic and cute with some fun characters in it.
My one complaint is that the ending felt really abrupt. I wish there would have been an epilogue or at least a little more to the last chapter before we were just done. But I'm sure we will get to see them again in future stories. Other than that this is a fun read for when you are just looking for that guaranteed Happily Ever After.
Narration:
Timothy Campbell is a strong narrator and has over 100 titles to his name, most see to me in the Historical Romance category. His voice for all the characters carried well, I enjoyed Dillan's voice the most but he did great even with the female characters. I enjoyed his portrayal of the story and you could tell he felt really comfortable with all the character voices. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

T.I.M.E. Most Anticipated Books Of 2024
♡ T.I.M.E. TIP: Although it is a cumulative series, you can read this book series as standalone books since they are interconnected romance books… Meaning each book focuses on a different couple from the same "world" of the McQuoid family... As for me, I started with Book 1 and missed Book 2. But regretted it, as I felt a bit "out of the loop" of events referenced in Book 3... So, I intend to circle back to Book 2 and continue in order moving forward... I don't want to miss a single detail!... ✨😎✨

BOOK QUOTE: "Her eyes reflected back such hurt he immediately felt like he'd kicked a kitten..." — A Sure Duke by Christi Caldwell
When I picked up this book, it had been a while since I last read a book by Christi Caldwell, and boy, was I missing out! This book was fantastic! I won't be waiting so long again to read another of her books!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
First of all, how gorgeous is that cover? I was swooning over this love story before I even started it, and I had a feeling I was going to love the book as much as I loved others by the author. I was correct! It’s a wonderful historical romance that made my heart melt on more than one occasion.
Alexandra and Dallin are such dynamic protagonists, and they have an incredible love story. Their first meeting was so romantic, and I can totally see why they fell so hard for each other. Between the talks of Shakespeare, the beautiful evening, the secretive nature of their encounter, and the stargazing, it’s positively swoon-worthy.
Unfortunately for Alexandra and Dallin, life got in the way. Now, a year after their first meeting, things are very different, and Alexandra’s duty to her family prevents her from following her heart. And, in fear of being shunned by society, she cannot even tell Dallin why she must marry another. It’s easy to see why Dallin is confused, hurt, and angry with Alexandra, and you also sympathize with her because of the situation she’s in.
Their situation also reveals how different their families are. While Dallin’s is very open, boisterous, and supportive, Alexandra’s is more reserved and proper. However, in both families, there is a lot of love. The families, though neighbors, don’t associate with each other, and Alexandra’s looks down on Dallin’s. It’s interesting to see how the family dynamics influence their decisions, actions, and feelings, and I so hoped that they would eventually see eye to eye.
I always love historical romances with road trips. This one is filled with tension and chemistry, and tropes that I adore, including only one room/bed! It is on this trip that Alexandra and Dallin learn more about each other and really start to let their walls down. more about each other and events from the last year that led to their present situation.
I thought this was a great story and a fabulous addition to the series. I’m a big fan of Caldwell’s historical romances, and I’m looking forward to reading more by her. Hopefully, well have more stories with Dallin’s amazing family!
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
A Sure Duke is book three in “The McQuoids of Mayfair” written by the talented author Christi Caldwell. Although this is the third book of the series I was easily able to enjoy without having read books one or two (although I plan on reading them soon). Overall I would consider this book to be a light-hearted, opposites attract, historical romance with a banter filled journey providing the perfect forced proximity situation that ultimately brings the two MCs together with a satisfying conclusion. The MCs of this story are Dallin McQuoid who is the eldest son of the boisterous McQuoid family, whose reputation among the ton leaves much to be desired 😉 and the heroine, Alexandra Bradbury, the oldest daughter of the Marquess of Queensbury, whose family is struggling after the death of her father. I loved watching these two as their relationship grew from neighborly friendship to love and of course Caldwell knows how to turn up the heat as their feelings for each other developed into passion.
I read this book in one night and although there were some parts that kind of dragged - it wasn’t enough to make me consider not finishing the story and ultimately didn’t detract from my enjoyment.

One magical night leads to windfall of love, lost and power to follow your heart but at what cost? This is my first book by Caldwell and it will not be my last, I was pleasantly surprised how fun this story played out.
Alexandra Bradbury and Dallin McQuoid are neighbors but could not be more different, that is till one night changes everything. Could their be a love match? However when Alexandra's father dies and leaves them in financial ruin. Alexandra is expected to now do what is best for her family. She must marry a wicked wealthy marquess. regardless of what her heart wants.
This is until another crisis happens and puts both Alexandra and Dallin in the same place to save both their families. The sparks are still there as much as Alexandra tries to fight it. Is there away she can have love and also save her family?
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for a copy of this story for my honest review.
I adored this book and read it in one day. It can be hard to make Regency romance feel novel and exciting, but Christi Caldwell succeeded with A Sure Duke.
I found both Alexandra and Dallin to be complex, fully formed characters (who additionally happened to both be very likable). I never once questioned their motivations or feelings. It all just made sense.
I was engaged in this book until the very end and found myself really invested in seeing this story through.
My one criticism would be that the conclusion of the book felt too quick and abrupt. To me, it felt like it was missing another chapter or at least a brief epilogue.
But, that minor flaw (entirely subjective!) really doesn’t take away from how great this book is. This was a five star read for me and I hope it gets as much readership as it deserves. It’s really a well done Regency romance that feels exciting until the very end.
This is my 84th book by Christi Caldwell. I read 2 of her books in 2013 but didn’t pick her up again to read faithfully until 2015. I have to admit this series hasn't really been my favorite of hers but she is such a good writer I can't not read a book she puts out.
I really enjoyed reading Alexandra and Dallin's story. It was such a fun read. I loved their personalities and their storyline. Even though I read this story and wasn't listening with an audio book, I love how Dallin said her name. What I mean by that, is in the wording of certain situations, the way Christi Caldwell, placed him saying her name was so hot!!! Just so good. The only thing is I wish there would have been an epilogue. Evan though you are pretty sure what happens, it's nice to know for sure.
This was really enjoyable and I was at the edge of my sit with 'll the twists and turns, wanting to know how all the mess would get sorted. I actually slowed down the narration to 2x speed so I could fully savour he story. Star crossed lovers, with slow burn but full of earning and virtually no spice, the story is enchanting. Whilst the narrator was amazingly good I think a female voice would have made it Even better. Free on KU with audio included.
The beautiful and curious Alexandra Bradbury has a chance encounter with Dallin McQuoid on a starlit night when she sneaks onto the rooftop of his family home. They feel an immediate attraction. Though they were neighbours, due to the dynamic of their family they had never met before. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes for Alexandra and she is forced to assume responsibility for her household. A sudden family crisis brings the two together on a journey, as they strive for the same goal, to protect their family.
I am a big fan of the historical romance genre, and one of my favourite things is how easily I can get lost in them. The writing in The Sure Duke, however, was initially very hard to read. Many sentences were overwritten, almost seeming to run on forever. I had to read some of these sentences 3 times over. But once I got used to the pace and flow of the writing style, it was much easier to follow along.
Both main characters are very likeable and have an adorable dynamic together. The plot was very exciting once the journey picked up and I had a really fun time. The romance is slow-burn and mildly spicy. I did find, however, that there was a lot of repetitive pining and misunderstanding for my liking throughout the journey and the resolution at the end was just so abrupt and left me wanting. A little more wrap up would have been great, it was almost as if it were missing one more chapter! I did enjoy reading about the many side characters and would love to see a spinoff novel with Wingrave one day. I also found out after reading that this is actually the third book in a series featuring the McQuoid siblings.
I’m not sure at what stage in editing I’m reading this novel, but I’ll only mention it here because I was very confused. At one point Alexandra’s siblings’ name is changed to Ellis, and there is a bit of confusion because both her younger sisters are referred to as the youngest.
Other than that I very much enjoyed reading this story and I’m so glad to have discovered this author and hope to read more from them!
Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for sending this book for review. All opinions are my own.
I initially snagged this book for its lovely cover design, and was so pleasantly surprised to see that astronomy featured as a connection between our hero and heroine. Isn’t it a gorgeous cover? The story begins with Alexandra being dared by her sisters to sneak over to her neighbor’s rooftop to determine what this silver spire is on their roof. Thinking no one is home, she is surprised to be caught by Viscout Dallin who thinks she is a burglar come to rob his family’s home. The opening banter between Dallin and Alexandra is perfection and their meet cute is both sweet and humorous—he teases her and she is so surprised to have this kind of encounter with a man that it makes her want to linger. It is clear that Dallin and Alexandra are enamored with one another, but since Alexandra has not yet come out, she makes Dallin promise to dance with her once she is debuted. The love of the night sky and stars features prominently and helps seal the budding romance between these two.
Unfortunately a lot can happen in two years and Alexandra and Dallin have not seen each other since their rooftop meet cute until it is time for Alexandra to debut. Expecting to see the same young hopeful girl he left behind, Dallin overhears a conversation and misunderstands Alexandra’s intentions. This miscommunication is crucial to the enormity of the book, and pits Alexandra and Dallin against one another. I found that the misunderstanding went on just a tad too long, but it does however set up sparking banter between Dallin and Alexandra as they both race across England to prevent a marriage from occurring.
I love a good roadtrip and it opens up so many possibilities for Dallin and Alexandra to reexplore their initial sparks of interest. You can expect some favorite tropes such as only one room at the inn, one bed, and enemies to lovers. This is definitely a slowburn and there were many times I just wanted to grab Dallin and Alexandra and scream, “tell each other!” to help propel them past their misunderstanding. The romance aspect is apparent in their internal thoughts and actions towards one another and I loved how they mutually loathed and pined at the same time, but I just wished they had gotten there quicker. I had so many beautiful quotes highlighted in my reading and found many moments to just sigh and swoon over.
This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone even though there are mentions to previous relationships. Christi Caldwell is definitely an author I hope to read again, and I’m curious to see what she will write next—it’s bound to be sweetly emotional and lovely. I received this advanced copy from Montlake and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I devoured this book in one sitting! The pining, the tension, the heartache; this book has it all and Christi Caldwell wrote it so beautifully.
Notes: Happily Ever After, 4/5 stars, 2/5 spicy
Our FMC, Alexandra, is the oldest Bradbury sister and finds herself in a situation that requires she marry not for love, but to ensure the livelihood of her family and, most importantly, her two younger sisters. While betrothed to the very formidable and cold Marquess Wingrave, Alexandra finds herself pining for Dallin McQuoid, the eldest McQuoid brother. Dallin and Alexandra had a very brief romantic (PG) encounter years ago, that left them both wanting more. Once Dallin finds out though that Alexandra will be marrying the future Duke, he writes her off as a vain woman, searching only for a title and wealth.
Alexandra and Dallin are thrown together as they attempt to rectify a situation that could be disastrous to both families. While traveling, the two continue to fight their attraction, even as their hesitant friendship forms.
We meet quite a few enjoyable side characters! Alexandra’s two sisters, Cora and Daphne, and the large extended McQuoid brood. I believe there are some previous books involving the McQuoid sisters, but I haven’t yet had the change to read those. I’ve definitely added them to my TBR though!
Christi does such an amazing job in making you feel for both of these characters. And while this book does have a little spice, and lovely “will they, won’t they” tension, I wouldn’t exactly call it spicy. Christi is not overly descriptive with her scenes, but provides enough information you get the gist. ;) I found myself multiple times holding my breath through the romantic tension, and also frowning as the characters fought their heartache.
I hope we get to see more of the McQuoid family, and the remaining Bradford sisters. I also wonder if Marquess Wingrave will maybe have a redemption arc??
I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review.
A Sure Duke is the third book in The McQuoids of Mayfair series. I read the first one in the series, but missed the second, not sure how that happened. But these can all be stand-alone reads.
Alexandra, is the oldest Bradbury sister and finds herself in a situation that requires she marry not for love, but to rescue her family and, most importantly, her two younger sisters from being ruined from her father's lack of financial stability. An arranged marriage with the Marquess Wingrave is expected of her.
Alexandra remembers a night long ago when she broke into the McQuoid house and found Dallin, the eldest McQuoid brother. Dallin and Alexandra bonded during a brief meeting looking at the stars through a telescope. After overhearing a conversation that he misinterprets, Dallin finds out that Alexandra will be marrying the future duke, a sworn enemy of the McQuiods.
When Cora, Alexandra's younger sister runs off to Gretna Green to marry a cousin to the McQuoid's, Alexandra chases after her and runs into trouble, only be rescued by Dallin. They join forces to stop the wedding.
This was very entertaining. This is a wonderful addition to the series. The characters are strong willed and fun to get to know. The character of the Marquess Wingrave is featured as a potential match for Alexandra, and we have learned that he lost out on another bride previously which puts him at odds with the McQuoids. This leaves me to believe that he will be featured in another one possibly finding his own true match with one of the McQuoid sisters. I hope...
I received an ARC from NetGAlley for an unbiased review.
what a page turner! I couldn't stop reading and then I remembered that it's in the same series as Heiress at Sea, one of my favorites from the last year. . Alexandra made me cry, the difficulties in her life, her family, and her dreams. I couldn't help but cry and wish for a happy ending for her. Dallin is very compelling especially when he shows how much he loves her and wants to be with her . Alexandra and her sisters are very curious about their neighbors, the Mcquoids, especially with the great rivalry between their families. But Alexandra wants to see that strange terrace where men usually spend their time. One night when the family seems to be traveling, they decide to enter the house and solve the mystery . and is surprised by the eldest son of the family, Dallin Mcquoid . Only one night and a brief exchange for both of them are enough to fall in love, but when tragedy hits Alexandra's family and she is forced to make a very difficult decision, Dallin reappears in her life to complicate things . A bumpy road trip, extravagant family members and a slow burn passion that seems to set all the pages on fire are the elements that keep me turning pages and wishing for more . Thanks to Christi Caldwell and Montlake for give me a copy of this beautiful book in exchange for my honest and voluntary opinion
Alexandra Bradbury and Dallin McQuoid are neighbours who couldn’t be more different. She’s prim, mindful, and skittish of social improprieties. Dallin is slightly scandalous, boisterously charming, and unbothered by gossip. On an unexpected night of magic forged under the stars, they discover what they do have in common. Then another crisis arises, and the dutiful daughter must embark on a journey with the waggish lord across the street to prevent a catastrophe for both of their families. The third book in the series & is easily read on its own. Another engrossing, captivating romance from the author. Dallin & Alexandra were complex delightful characters & I was taken on an emotional journey with them to their HEA. The author always delivers & this is no exception. I was drawn in from the beginning & finished it several hours later as I couldn’t put it down My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I read this book as a stand alone, but this is the third book in the series.
I was drawn in by the synopsis and the beautiful cover and I actually had a lot of fun reading this book. I did find it hard not knowing the backstory of a few of the characters when reading this and I feel like if I had read the first two books in the series I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more.
That being said, I haven't read a historical fiction book in quite a while, the MCs were likeable, their romance was cute and very swoony but I felt as though the ending left me with more questions than answers, as it was quite abrupt.
I enjoyed the book but it was lacking something I couldn.t quite put my finer on in able to rate it higher.
they want to be in love, they are in love, but they can’t tell anyone about it. not even to themselves. alexandra and dallin can’t be together. despite being neighbours, they don’t go around in the circle nor does her mother think highly of a merchant family. when dallin’s cousin and alexandra’s younger sister eloped to get married at gretna green, the eldest in both families rushed out to prevent them from making a mistake. however, not the mistake they had both conjured up with their prejudices and preconceived notions. there are more than meets the eye, and maybe it takes a trip together for them to understand their own hearts.
I haven’t read a Regency Romance in a while and this is a new author to me. I liked the characters Alexandra and Dallin and their first meeting was daring and romantic. When Alexandra’s family secretly faces ruin the plan to save them means Alexandra can never be with Dallin. But they’re thrown together in strange circumstances and a race across the country ensues. There is a happy ending but it’s very abrupt and I would have liked a bit more.
Thank you, Netgallery, for this ARC! Very good Historical Romance.. sexy, and good plot! Didn't give it 4 stars as it wasn't my favorite, but it was still good!
Lady Alexandra Bradbury's continuous observation of the house across the street pays off, she's finally given the opportunity to discover the secret on the roof. With the McQuiod family gone and the dark of night, she makes her way up to the roof of the house only to be discovered by Viscount Crichton, Lord Dallin McQuoid. Under the stars promises are made, but death and debt changes Alexandra's dreams. When her sister runs away with a McQuiod cousin, she and Dallin must work together to avoid disaster. On the road to Gretna Green, gives them time to know each other, but more pain. This is a long road trip with delays, revelations and a few puzzling questions. Open bedroom door. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
You definitely get what you pay for with this one. It’s a run of the mill romance book with a run of the mill plot. Not anything you haven’t seen before but a quick read with enjoyable tropes.
*I‘d like to thank NetGalley, the publisher and Christi Caldwell for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for a honest review.
„A Sure Duke“ by Christi Caldwell is somewhat a sequel to the book „A Duke Alone“ and tells the story of Alexandra and Dallin. Alex and Dallin are neighbours who have shared the one or other snowball fight when they were younger. But because their parents don‘t get along, never had to chance to get closer. Until the night Alex can‘t help herself but to find out what the strange thing on Dallin‘s roof is. As his family is absent and her sisters egg her on, she throws on her coat and wanders through the dark halls of the abandoned manor. Once she reaches the roof, she realises that the house wasn‘t abandoned at all and Dallin had caught her red handed trespassing. They bond over astronomy and desire to break free from the constraints of their status. Love has its first spark and Dallin promises to dance with her once she is out in society. When Alex returns home she is confronted with the horrible news of her father passing. Even worse they are broke and the only way to save them is for Alex to marry the son of a Duke who couldn’t care less about her. Two years after the faithful night of Alex and Dallin‘s meeting on the rooftop, they meet again during a ball. Well, kind of. Dallin overhears a conversation between Alex and her mother regarding him and his family, degrading them and promising to keep Alex‘s younger sister from Dallin‘s cousin. Angry and hurt, he retreats. But when Alex‘s younger sister runs away with Dallin‘s cousin, both of them get thrown into an unexpected road trip on which they are forced to overcome their differences.
I want to start with everything I liked about this novel. Firstly, I am a fan of Caldwell‘s overall writing style. I get immediately thrown into her world and reading feels like watching a movie. Every character you meet in unique and fun, creating great interactions between them. Additionally, I was over the moon for the Myrtle cameo, the heroine of „A Duke Alone“. I was too glad to see her again and happy with her husband. I loved her story and was excited to meet more of her family. Lastly, I liked the way Caldwell wove Greek Mythology throughout the story. It was kinda like a re-telling, but not really. Still, I liked that about the book how the Myth foreshadowed the story and worked as a red thread through the story.
Now to what couldn‘t win me over. First, Dallin and Alex‘s age difference wouldn‘t have bothered if Dallin hadn‘t felt her up when he was aware that she might be under eighteen and he was already in his twenties. He instantly felt lust towards her even though she wasn‘t even out in society yet. On this notion, I also disliked how immature Dallin appeared for someone well in his twenties and the heir to an title. Dallin talks and talks about his duty and his responsibility to fulfil it, but then gets into a sissy fit with a young girl over small piece of conversation he overhears. He is so mad at her and constantly berates her, a young girl barely of age. Never once does he confront her though. He sulks and clashes out as her, but it never occurs to him that there is more to the story than a few seconds of conversation between Alex and her mother, a woman who hates him family. The miscommunication trope in this novel is just simply annoying. I am usual not a hater of miscommunication as almost every single romance novel works with it in one way or another. But at a certain point the trope was just lazy writing and pulled the story like chewing gum. Like you are going to tell me that an adult of probably almost thirty years doesn‘t manage to have a proper conversation with a young woman he likes? Yeah, right. Furthermore, the story felt so long. Like the scenes were never ending. The first scene was dragged over at least 5 chapters, the ballroom scene was of similar length. Either the scenes were never ending or almost cut short, creating a very strange pacing between spending chapters in the same scene or changing the scenery from one paragraph to another completely without any form of transition. The ending happened way to quick. Alex and Dallin just made up…or at least somewhat made up and then immediately sleep with each other. Then they get discovered the morning after and are forced to marry. The End. Literally nothing happens after that.
Overall, a disappointment. It‘s not bad per se, but the story, the pacing and some of the character arc wasn‘t convincing. I saw a lot of potential for a great story, but the book felt rushed and weirdly constructed. I do not know if the published version will be much different, but I hope that some of my criticisms were erased by further editing.
I enjoyed this book very much! The story moved very well, the dialogue was snappy and fun, and it really keeps you glued to the book. There isn’t a boring part in any of the book. You expect a happily ever after but Christi Caldwell keeps it exhilarating right until the end.
The book refers to romances in previous books, in a way that made me curious about the other books. There are two: The Duke Alone and The Heiress at Sea. This book, A Sure Duke is the third book in the McQuoids of Mayfair series (although Goodreads lists it as #1). A Sure Duke can be read as a standalone, but I will definitely check out the other two books.
Alexandra comes from a very aristocratic and distinguished family, where she and her sisters are treated with the utmost respect and deference. Alexandra and her sisters are brought up with all the proper rules and are groomed to be perfect ladies. And they most definitely don’t interact with people that are considered beneath them. That is why they don’t associate with the McQuoids, their very interesting next door neighbors. One night Alexandra lets her curiosity get the better of her and that is how she meets Dallin. They quickly discover they have more in common than you would expect. Both Alexandra and Dallin feel entrapped; she by the restrictions of being a woman, Dallin by being the heir and thus not able to freely travel and explore the world. Their encounter is brief but their connection is strong, and they both look forward to meeting again in the future. But then Alexandra’s life is turned upside down and on top of that, she is confronted with a younger sister for whom she feels responsible to keep her out of trouble. When she tries to reason with her sister Dallin overhears their conversation in which Alexandra can’t divulge her true feelings about the McQuoids, and Dallin mistakenly assumes that is how she truly feels about him and his relatives. That she is haughty and snobbish and looks down on him, so he acts angry and accusingly. Alexandra is stunned by his behavior and thinks he never felt the same way about her as she did about him. They are both hurt, disillusioned and heartbroken but meet again on a journey to stop her sister and his cousin from eloping. It is truly a lovely story. You can feel the heartbreak and the longing for each other, and why they don’t dare to share their true feelings.
The clash between Alexandra and her sister Cora at the beginning of the book is so incredibly well written, it’s heartbreaking! Throughout the book Alexandra’s agony and inner turmoil is obvious but she feels there is nothing she can do. Dallin too, feels trapped by his feelings for Alexandra. They are both the same, yet so far away from each other. It is so beautifully and realistically written! This doesn’t make this book heavy, but both of them are weighed down by the burdens they feel they must carry and can’t share with anyone else.
Their siblings, on the other hand, are carefree, cheerful and enjoy everything life has to offer. Bold little Daphne and the perceptive, witty twins Fleur and Quillon. It makes the book so much more fun and lively when the ‘unimportant’ scenes are also filled with fun characters and humor. Definitely potential candidates for the leading role in a new book.
I liked that the book had some unexpected twists that were both refreshing but not too far-fetched. It was fresh and realistic. And I really liked the list of Ss!
If you decide to read this book, you will not be disappointed. It is a beautiful story and I can highly recommend it!
Thank you Netgalley, Christi caldwell and publisher Montlake for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
P.S. I found two little errors in the book: - Chapter 19: a part of a sentence accidentally disappeared: “As Dallin and Alexandra followed the proprietor abovestairs, Dallin’s…..” - and Brone’s last name apparently is Smith but he is referred to as Brone Campbell twice in the book. I think Campbell is the better name since it sounds more Scottish than Smith, but I’m sure he cannot have two surnames?
P.P.S. What happened to the coach and the horses?🤪
