In this funny and inspiring novel from the authors of The Better Half, a mess of a heroine is desperate to resolve her past so she can finally rediscover who she was always meant to be.

Antonia “Toni” Arroyo’s protective mother has outdated notions for her daughter’s life: employ her natural beauty and marry young. But Toni has wholly different aspirations.

A promising inventor and budding entrepreneur, she fights to keep her passions alive as a financially strapped mother of twins with a job in airport transportation services that has her going in circles. One treasured frequent passenger is elderly traveler Sylvia Eisenberg, Toni’s sage but unofficial adviser and cheerleader. When Toni meets Sylvia’s grandson, Ash, a striking venture capitalist, luck just might bend her way.

With a game-changing new business endeavor in development, Toni hustles an opportunity to pitch her idea on TV’s Innovation Nation. Toni’s unexpected challenger? Her very own recently resurfaced, self-aggrandizing not-quite-ex-husband. As Toni’s interrupted past collides with her tenuous future, she is more determined than ever to follow through on her delayed dreams. Toni’s been clinging to “maybe” for so long—it’s finally time for “absolutely.”

The robustness of a farm girl, the honed sophistication of a city woman, a dash of Jewish chutzpah, and a heaping cup of endurance athlete and voila, you have Alli Frank. Alli was raised in Yakima, WA, the only child of two parents who instilled in her that hard work coupled with a resilient spirit will take you where you want to go. So up some of the highest mountains Alli climbed, down insanely steep terrain she skied and across long swathes of land she ran. To pay for all this adventure, Alli has worked in education for over 20 years in San Francisco and Seattle - from an overcrowded, cacophonous public high school to a pristine private girl's school. She has been a teacher, curriculum leader, coach, college counselor, assistant head, private school co-founder, sometimes pastor, often mayor, and de facto parent therapist. A graduate of Cornell and Stanford Universities, Alli can still be found with her nose deep in a book or hunkered down at the movies, never one to miss a great story. Alli lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband, two daughters and terribly cute mini-Bernedoodle. When she needs good food (cause she can't really cook) she turns to her co-author Asha Youmans.

I feel like the only reasonable explanation for the title of this book is IRONY because the fmc was anything but.

I truly dislike like. She was annoying, indecisive and spineless especially when it came to her husband.
The book also an info dump. So many unnecessary information that did not serve any purpose other than to tell me the authors are "woke".

The writing also made it hard to follow.

Boss Lady by Alli Frank & Asha Youmans was more than I expected. This was pretty much a rags to riches story, with an emphasis on strong female characters. This was a very inspiring read & I would recommend to friends.

Thank you NetGalley & Montlake for the ARC copy of this book.

I know I keep saying this, but I absolutely adore Alli Frank and Asha Youmans, and so far, I have not read a single book by them I haven't loved. Boss Lady was no different and their blend of uniqueness, humor, and tear-jerking topics get me every single time, so it's no wonder this book blew me away! I love where they got their idea for Toni's job and their not-so-subtle references to a famous TV show and a certain male entrepreneur. 😏 The family and motherhood elements were on point as always and I loved Toni's character immensely, even as she debates taking her crappy ex back.

The cast of characters is very eclectic, and I couldn't help but fall head over heels in love with Mrs. Eisenberg. The banter between her and Toni was hilarious, and there were plenty of both funny and heart-wrenching moments. The audiobook is narrated by Bahni Turpin who has been the narrator for all of Frank and Youmans books to date, and once again she knocked it out of the park. Turpin is one of my favorite narrators for a very good reason, and she was a joy and pleasure to listen to. The romance between Toni and Ash took a bit to get going but the tension and chemistry were there, and I was rooting for this 'second chance' romance to win out. Boss Lady is inspiring, has lots of depth, and made my heart happy. And I dare you not to cry at the end...

Thank you to the publishers and Over the River Public Relations for my complimentary listening and reader copies of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

This is a funny and poignant story about a woman's journey and desire to be an entrepreneur.

Antonia (Toni) is raising twin daughters alone after her husband disappears. He has some sort of midlife crisis and is seeking to find himself. That doesn't help Toni raise their teenage daughters. Luckily, she has friends and family who are supportive and push her to achieve more in life. One of these is a client, Mrs Eisenberg, who is a hoot. She has lived quite the life, and has a lot of knowledge and advice to dispense to Toni. That is, if Toni hears and accepts it, sometimes Toni gets in her own way.

I had a love-hate relationship with Toni. I admired her independence and gumption, but she also came across as wishy-washy when it came to her husband, Simon. She knows what she has to do, but her guilt is holding her back. That Catholic guilt will get you every time! Plus, her mother is pressuring her to keep her marriage intact. I despised Simon. He believes he can have whatever he wants without regard for Toni or anyone else.

Now, there is a bright spot in this book: Ash. He is the grandson of Sylvia Eisenberg and a gem. There are the usual misunderstandings between him and Toni, but he doesn't let that stop him from trying to win her heart.

Other characters help round out this book and support Toni in her dream. I did think the product that she pitched to Innovation Nation was genius.

Overall, this was a book about self-discovery, and we give it 4 paws up.

I'm really just loving this author duo - I have enjoyed every book they have written together so far! This book was such a treat with a middle aged single mother navigating life with her teen daughters and a job in the airport alongside her lifelong dream of entrepreneurship, her feisty aging mother, and the husband who abandoned the family years ago. It's such a treat to read about someone with a different kind of job than is so often depicted in women's fiction, especially a customer-facing job in an airport, which I find just fascinating.

I can't wait to see what this duo writes next!

Clever, humorous, and inspiring!

Boss Lady is a flirty, charming tale about the hardworking, driven Antonia Arroyo who, after her husband walks out and doesn’t return for more than a year learns to juggle her love of science, her extreme creativity and drive to succeed, the raising of her twin teen girls, her monotonous job in airport transportation, and the reappearance of a crush from a lifetime ago.

The prose is smooth and sharp. The characters are focused, amusing, and dependable. And the plot is a lighthearted, funny blend of life, love, introspection, friendship, awkward situations, embarrassing moments, taking chances, and the ups and downs of being a single mother and an entrepreneur.

Overall, I found Boss Lady to be a smart, simmering, entertaining read by Frank & Youmans that’s brimming with empowerment, female friendships, and delectable romance.

What I loved:

Female positive friendships, great messages for working toward a goal, the humor, plenty of back story for all the characters, the writing was great

What I didn't love:

The putzy, almost ex-husband who never feels quite fully authentic for this story, the way the plot seems to get side tracked by yet another one page anecdote, the plot that was never really clear until past the half way point

I wish the plot was arranged in a more linear way and focused more on Toni's business goals rather than meandering all over the place. I wasn't sure if the main point of the story was about Simon, or a new love interest or her dream of running her own business. The writing was good but the story only started to come together in the last three or four chapters. Tbh, I think an editor should have seen where to tighten up the focus of the plot or move things around to make the flow work much better.

I wish I would have loved this book more because I can see what this novel should have been.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this book for free in exchange for my review! All opinions are my own.

I chose this book because the cover caught my eye and I had also heard that Bahni Turpin was a great audiobook narrator, however I had not yet listened to any books by her.

This was an interesting story about a middle-aged Black woman who is a single mom and works at an airport helping the disabled/older passengers get where they need to go. It just so happens that one of her clients is related to her former professor who she had a thing for 20+ years ago. Chaos ensues of course.

Overall, I thought this was a cute story and I can see why Bahni Turpin is a well-respected audiobook narrator, but I also know that I was not the target demographic for this book as I'm only in my 20s. I do want to check out more books by Alli and Asha though in the future.

Many Thanks again to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review.

Boss Lady by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans. Thanks to @overtheriverpr for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Toni is a recently single mother of twins trying her best. When she has a new business endeavor and an opportunity to pitch it on a tv show, she is excited but her past will get in the way.

This story is perfect for someone in my age group: forties! The main character carves her one path at middle age and follows dreams, despite obstacles along the way. It was slow paced at times and parts were hard to get through but I appreciated the story, the strong female independence, and the support shown.

Boss Lady comes out 7/2.

Such a cute and quick read.

Toni is a recent single mother of twin girls who has a passion for inventing. Currently working in transportation at the airport, she befriends an elderly woman when the woman's grandson, Ash, enters her life and helps open some doors.

A cast full of loveable characters, cultural references, girl boss energy and family dynamics. This is a great book with a lot of heart.

I “absolutely” adore this book. It’s heartfelt, inspiring, AND I just love how it’s fundamentally about women supporting women. While I loved the slow-burn romance between Toni & Ash, I appreciated how their romance wasn't the focus of the book. The book was about Toni believing in herself and finding ways to go after her goals, dreams, and what she truly wants in life, with the encouragement of other strong women (best friend, mother, as well as a mentor). I especially loved the supportive relationship between Toni and Mrs. Eisenberg—that just captured my heart entirely 🤍

Read this book if you love:
✈️ binge watching Shark Tank
🤍 a hardworking, self-deprecating, and very relatable Afro-Puerto Rican heroin
✈️ an international cast of characters
🤍 slow-burn romance
✈️ women supporting women

Thank you to Alli and Asha, Over the River PR & Amazon Publishing for the gifted copy to read and review.

Boss Lady is the second novel I have read by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans. I like their writing style a lot and this story was really engaging throughout.

Most of the time, I found myself getting angry on Toni's behalf or laughing along with her. I was always cheering her on, as well. The supporting characters were great (especially Zwena) and I loved Toni's interactions with them. I want there to be another book featuring these characters. There were moments I wasn't expecting and that kept the story fresh and even more interesting. I had been watching How to Die Alone when I started reading this novel and there were some similarities to that show, especially with Toni and Mel having the same job.

My only concern was that there were some time inconsistencies. Since this was an ARC, I hope they were fixed for the final print.

I definitely recommend this novel for an entertaining read that will keep you turning the pages.

Movie casting suggestions:
Gloria: Debbi Morgan
Sylvia: Linda Lavin
Simon: Chris Pine

I loved the great supporting characters! Toni had a fantastic support system and I loved her relationship with Mrs. Eisenberg and what they both took from it. I also enjoyed that the main characters were more mature in age. It's nice to see mid-life representation in a romance story. This feels like a rarity (outside of romantasy "mid-life woman comes into her magic and enters her crone years" type stories) and it shouldn't be.

That said, I think it's a disservice and slightly misleading to call this a romance, although there's definitely a romantic storyline. There was much more focus on Toni's journey of self-growth than on her love life, which felt appropriate given the premise and description. But it took me a while to get pulled into the story, Toni has a lot going on and a full life but something about the storyline just felt flat for me for most of the book. There's some conflict and misunderstandings along the way that will keep readers' interest, especially with her a-hole ex-husband. Mild spoiler: I got frustrated with her regarding the conflict(s) of interest surrounding her participation on the show, mostly because what did she think was going to happen? I kept waiting to see the conflicts of interest take more of a main focus earlier in the story and be addressed, and while some were noted they just didn't impact things in the ways I was expecting. Watching for the resolution of those also took me out of my enjoyment of the story a bit. Not a bad story overall and it was a quick read, but it ultimately left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. Thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC of this story in exchange for my objective opinion.

I received this ARC and was READY. I mean, “Boss Lady”? Sign me up. I was expecting power moves, sharp heels, and feminist mic drops.

What I got? A whole mixed bag. There were moments that delivered our main character had flashes of wit and ambition I lived for—but other times it felt like she was stuck in a LinkedIn motivational post. And not in a good way.

There were definitely themes I appreciated women in leadership, identity, cultural pressure; but the execution didn’t always slay. Some parts dragged, and the tone? A little all over the place. Like, are we laughing? Crying? Starting a business? I needed a memo.

Still, I enjoyed the book trying to be bold. She’s not perfect, but she’s out here hustling. Respect.

just…eh

I think the biggest accomplishment is getting through this book. That’s number 1. My eyes rolled so much I didn’t think it would be possible at times - Toni as a main character is just so annoying that if she were my friend or coworker I can see myself walking away from her or avoiding her. Half the time she’s berating other people she encounters for being judgmental or ignorant while completely ignoring her judgement and ignorance! Maybe the writer knew that she low-key sucks by writing the ending she did (not that her low-life husband deserved his ending, but still). Just be prepared to ick a lot at all these people.

I had no idea these two authors had written other books together. Even reading Boss Lady, you cannot tell it was written by two people. The story flows as seamlessly as if it was written by only one person.

Boss Lady is a delightfully uplifting and humorous read that deals with everyday situations in the lives of true-to-life characters. At the center of the story we have our main character, Antonia "Toni" Arroyo, mother of teenage twin daughters, who was abandoned by her husband, Simon, who left them to "go find his true self". Thrust practically overnight into a life of single parenting with only her mother and two best friends, Zwena and Krish, as her support system, Toni navigates the challenges of everyday life - embarrassing moments and all - earning a living in airport transportation services, to make ends meet. But Toni knows she has more going for her than just her natural beauty. She has big plans for her future and those of her daughters. As a promising inventor and budding engineer, she develops a groundbreaking new product, and by a stroke of luck is afforded the opportunity to showcase and pitch her newest invention on TVs most popular show for entrepreneurs, Innovation Nation. But with her soon-to-be-ex-husband suddenly back in their lives, her world is turned upside down.

Luckily Toni has made another new friend, eccentric elderly traveler, and frequent passenger in need of Toni's airport transportation services, Sylvia Eisenberg. Then there is Sylvia's aloof grandson, Ash, whom Toni can't get off her mind.

With so much happening in Toni's life, the reader is taken on a wild ride alongside Toni and a wonderful cast of supporting characters for the ultimate prize of getting Antonia's budding business off the ground. Or could venture capitalist Ash or ex-husband-turned-life-coach, Simon, be what Toni needs more?

***

Filled with memorable characters, clever prose, and exceptional wit that will have you bent over with laughter, Boss Lady is an absolute treat. It features strong females and diverse characters; an engaging plot, and very realistic and relatable situations in which Toni finds herself.

What I liked most is the low-key romance that added a layer of sweetness to the story without being sappy. The main focus of the story is the friendships formed between all these assorted, quirky characters, and how they all come together to encourage and support our lovely protagonist, Antonia, in her venture for independence and the realization of a lifelong dream.

Boss Lady is ultimately a wonderfully lighthearted feel-good read, with a few wisdoms at its core. It might not be a book that takes itself too seriously, but it's certainly not a fluffy read either.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Montlake for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
3.5 stars rounded up

There is much to like in this book. I really liked that the old lady who chatted to Toni at the airport really was the entrepreneur and innovations guru who had supported some of the biggest names in the business – it was a clever reminder not to judge a book by its cover!

Toni has a brain which cannot stop coming up with bright ideas – she just needs one to work and be picked up by an investor so she can stop her job driving airport transfers. Her ex walked out, leaving her bringing up twins and shouldering all the bills and burdens. When Sylvia, her favourite client, falls ill and she goes with her to the hospital, their lives become more entwined.

Meeting Sylvia's grandson, Ash, changes everything – she finds someone attractive for the first time in forever, but he is completely out of reach... let alone she is still married. And now he is in a position to give her a chance at her dream on a TV investment show. Of course, her ex pops up, like a bad penny, and chaos ensues.

I felt that the plot got a bit overly twisted in places and could have been rejigged a bit to reduce the need for explanation, but I did really enjoy the characters and the storyline, as well as the outcome!

Boss Lady has one of the elements that I really enjoy in a novel --a strong older woman who is working hard to make a better life for herself and her children. Along with a strong main character, there is a bit of romance, an overbearing mother and friends that are always there when she needs them to be her support group.

Toni is a 40ish year old mom to two teenage girls. Her husband left several years earlier to 'find himself' and she's taken a job driving an airport shuttle to keep food on the table. She dreams of owning her own business and spends a lot of time trying out new ideas. Her friends are very supportive of her goal as is an elderly woman who she frequently shuttles to her airplane. Mrs. Eisenberg is very wealthy elderly woman and is one of her biggest cheerleaders and advisors. Throw Mrs. Eisenberg's grandson, Ash, into the mix. He is on a show similar to Shark Tank that tries to help entrepreneurs get money for start up of their business venture. Can she get on the show to pitch her latest idea -- and what is her wandering husband doing appearing on the same show to pitch his idea?? There seem to be some sparks between Toni and Ash -- will that help her get backing for her latest idea?

I really liked the character of Toni - she was a hard worker who was always thinking about ways to improve her life. She's spent so much of her life trying to come up with a business idea and as I read the book, I had my fingers crossed that she would succeed. When her husband shows up again, she has to decide whether to go back to her unfulfilling marriage or to continue to work to start up her own business. Mrs. Eisenberg always has good advice for her as do her friends at the airport. This book is a fun read with some laughs along the way. It's the first book that I've read by these authors and the reviews indicate that a lot of people liked their previous books, so I plan to look at some of their other books.

Boss Lady by A. Frank and A. Youmans, published by Montlake is a stand alone romance novel. I have to be honest, finishing this book was a challenge for me.
I read the blurb and was intrigued.
Toni's life is all mapped out by her overbearing mother. Only she has other plans - so far soo good. What I didn't expect was the pace and the one dimensionaity, the slow pace.
First I wanted to give three stars because I was bored at times but I trecked on and somehow I just can't, so here it is, I give 3,75 stars and hopefully someone else loves this story better than I.
Blurb:

Alli Frank and Asha Youmans' 2024 novel, Boss Lady, appealed to me because I had enjoyed a previous book of theirs (Tiny Imperfections), and because I was intrigued by the protagonist. Antonia "Toni" Arroyo transports passengers from one location to another in the San Francisco Airport. Her longtime aspirations to be a college-educated scientist had been put aside when her father died and her husband left her with twin girls to support. But she has continued to work on her inventions, with a dream of managing her own business. When she feels she has finally invented a worthwhile product that could attract investors, she is thrilled to get a spot on a Shark Tank-like TV show. Re-enter Toni's husband, who seems to think he can waltz back into their home and lives since he hasn't signed any divorce papers and their high school freshman daughters like having him around. He, too, has aspirations of starting his own business, and he clearly doesn't understand what attracts and motivates his wife.

Toni is a fun, relatable character, and I was charmed by her support system of her mother, her favorite transport client, and a couple of fellow airport employees, all with their own unique qualities and backgrounds, and their desire to help Toni succeed. There's a potential romance as well, but it's a very rocky road until late in the book and not as convincing as I would have liked. The Shark Tank-like show portrayed in the book is, of course, not very plausible (I watch a lot of Shark Tank). But the plot is something I hadn't encountered before, and although I thought that some sections were too drawn out, I recommend it as an easy, pleasurable read.

Antonia "Toni" Arroyo is a financially-strapped single mother of twins. She's married but her husband abandoned the family to find himself. *insert severe eye roll here* By day, Toni works in airport transportation; by night, she is a budding entrepreneur.

One of her frequent elderly travelers, Ms. Eisenberg, connects Toni with her handsome grandson who is a venture capitalist. Toni gets the opportunity to pitch her business idea on TV's Innovation Nation. Her unexpected challenger is the resurfaced not-quite-ex-husband. Oh, how the past collides with the present!

Antonia is the kind of chick you'd want to be friends with IRL. She is funny, loyal, responsible and self-aware of her flaws. She is playing the best she possibly can with the hand she was dealt. Yet there is no annoying self-pity. Antonia's circle of friends and daughters are quite likable too and a great representation of strong minority women.

Author duos are tricky. Some collaborate because of a mutual respect. Others are listed as a co-author to gain notoriety. But Alli Frank and Asha Youmans are meant to write together. Their writing styles complement perfectly. The dialogue and narrative passages intertwine. The tone of the main character did not change. I could hardly tell who wrote what until a few jumpy chapter transitions.

Boss Lady can be read fairly quickly; the story just flows and is very engaging. Don't let the romance genre mislead you. Boss Lady is about a strong female character determined to reach her goals with a positive support system. Very much like a "multicultural Golden Girls reboot." Readers will find themselves rooting for Toni the whole way. I totally recommend this new novel!

Happy Early Pub Day, Alli Frank and Asha Youmans! Boss Lady will be available Tuesday, July 2.
