Lets be honest: it's Pushkin!! Great translation and great collection of the greatest Russian poet of all time. Now for the controversial part of my review. I believe that Pushkin is the greatest poet of all time period full stop. During Operation Provide Comfort, after the First Gulf War I was stationed at Incirlik Air Base Turkey. I read a piece on Pushkin in Nat Geo and promptly fell in love with his work. In that piece the Pushkin expert said to the author "It's a shame you have no Pushkin." I would ask who in the west compares in both quality, quantity, and variety of work in such a short time. Emily Dickenson is just as good a poet, maybe better, but has no prose or epic poems. Elizabeth Barret Browning? Aurora Leigh is a s good as Eugene Onegin, but her other work pales. Byron? Epic poems, yes. Poetry just as good if not a bit better, but short stories arn't close. Poe and Washington Irving? Poetry no where as good while short stories are just as good and epic poems? I know this is personal opinion, but I believe/know I''m correct.
