Elizabeth and her nine siblings are kept under tight control by their father, Edward Moulton-Barrett. Elizabeth’s poor health is also used as a ploy by her father to keep control of her. He only loves her and needs her to love him. His moods keep his children in fear of him keeping them pliable to be dictated to. They all know and accept they will never have their own lives or be allowed to marry. But then Elizabeth and her sister Henrietta meet men they fall in love with, Elizabeth manages to keep hers, with the poet Robert Browning, a secret. Henrietta is not so lucky, and in controlling his daughter’s love life Elizabeth learns some truths about her father which helps her to decide about her future.

Set in Victorian England, in mid 1840s, the play, even with its slightly-outdated melodramatic dialogue, makes a shocking read. It was first performed in the 1930s, the story’s centre is the meeting and romance of two English Victorian poets, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning. Reading this play now makes me want to know more about this poetess than the couple of poems I have read by her. In Act II the character Elizabeth, in describing her dream to her brother Octavius, adds:

“Like automata, you get up at half past seven every morning. Like automata, you eat your breakfasts. Like automata, you go to your work. Like automata, you return home. You dine like automata. You go to bed like automata. … You all seem to me to have cut out of life everything that makes life worth living—excitement, adventure, change, conflict, frivolity, love. . . .”

This play was based on Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s life, despite all the obstacles from her health to her controlling father, it’s hard to read this and not respect her courage for not giving up on life and being determined to not just live but be alive.

When I stumbled across this play because my wife and I were studying poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (my wife’s chosen poet of the year) (I know, so much nerdiness to unpack here!), I knew that I always needed more plays to read (last year I only read three new ones!), and I figured that this would be an interesting way to learn more about the Brownings’ romance while I was at it. What I did not expect was a nuanced look at an abusive parental relationship from way back in 1846 (and written in 1930) with insight that resonates with any type of mentally or emotionally abusive relationship today.

The whole of the play takes place in Elizabeth’s bedroom, where she is a poetic invalid simply counting down the days until her poor constitution fades her away into nothing. We meet (probably) all of her eleven siblings, and even though that is a lot to keep track of, several of them are given distinguishing enough characteristics that they are recognizable and interesting. Her strict father, who clearly loves his children even if he has super high or unreasonable expectations for them, frequents her room to pooh pooh visitors and any optimistic doctor reports.

Enter famed poet Robert Browning, who had been exchanging letters with Elizabeth after reading some of her poems, and we get a double effect: the visibly improved health of Elizabeth and the underlying discomfort of knowing that her father would disapprove of their growing relationship.

These things play out in ways that you would expect for a normal romantic plotline, but--as previously noted--what surprised me was Besier’s poignant look at abusive and manipulative relationships. I do not know how historical this is, but clearly Besier either experienced or was intimately acquainted with someone who had experienced this type of abuse--because this reaches beyond plot device and delves into true and appalling personal mistreatment, in such a subtle yet (to the audience) obvious way. And when the audience is afforded a view into Mr. Barrett’s rationalization for his actions, it reveals past abuse that is even more despicable, yet entirely plausible. Finally, it ends on a note that ultimately highlights the desperate traits of an abusive personality while also giving hope for escaping such a relationship.

So, I’ve now read a play about the Brownings’ romance and that was interesting enough, but I also learned more about identifying and extricating vulnerable persons from a poisonous relationship. And if that is not a pleasant change of plans, it sure is--at least--a very satisfying one.

Fantastic!! It took a little while to get into, but now that I’ve read it, I realize how great it is! I wish I could leave it 6 stars! It raises so many great philosophical questions and is entertaining (it has so many exciting/climax scenes). This play has true literary merit, and I honestly think it should be taught in the classroom. Wow. Just read it. Wowow wowowow.

A book that belonged to my mother or my grandfather. I loved this when I read it as a teenager. It describes the courtship of Elizabeth Barret and Robert Browning while her controlling and disapproving father looks on.

I first read this play in the 1970s and it left such a strong impression on me that I hoped I would be able to see it performed live on stage. That still hasn’t happened. So I decided to re-read it now and still could not put it down even though I knew how it ended. My copy of this play was printed in 1969 and was part of a Readers Enrichment Series which also included a 50 page supplement. That included info on the author, how the play was written in 1930, rejected by most producers but finally performed. It also summarized the relevant historical background of the mid 1800s and the true history of the Barrett family as well as the relationship between Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning. The play itself, which is based on the true story of the Barrett Brownings, even without that supplemental information, is worth a read for people who wish to understand not only the societal norms at that time, and in the case of the Barretts, how the actions of an autocratic, unrealistic and emotionally abusive patriarch imposed severe behavioural restrictions on his children. The Barrett siblings were not permitted to be in relationships, marry, live outside the family home or have their own careers as they would be shunned and disinherited. It may not sound like a play you would want to read but I will read it again and still hope that I can see that under appreciated drama on stage.

The story of the romance between Robert and Elizabeth Browning is one of the loveliest romances, much more heartwarming than anything silly and fabricated like Romeo and Juliet. The play, however, is more about the family, as the title suggests.
The movie of the play made in the 1930s has a quaint charm to it. I read this after seeing the play and reading another book about the Brownings and of course their passionate letters.

I'd seen this mentioned several times recently. And I'd gotten the very mistaken idea that it was a comedy. Maybe it's funnier live since there were several witty lines. But it's a very dark play.

This was one of the few books i've read in acts, but i can say that it was quite an interesting story. The little room of 50 Wimpole street wrapped me completely and made me live the life of Barrets as one of them themselves. I got to know each one of them and i felt every kind of emotion running through them, fear, excitement, passion, love, kindness etc. What I didn't expect was the marriage of Elisabeth, the fragile of all the siblings and the oldest, in fact I was expecting Henrietta to get married like Ba did. But in the end all were surprised of what had come and the most shocked was their father Edward. He lost his favourite daughter and had to live with what was left and I think that deep down he forgave her, even though he pretended to be so rough and harsh, but he surely loved his children, in his own way.

I think I was expecting a melodramatic romance. Instead I got a harrowing tale of familial abuse. We don't really get to see much of the blossoming of the most famous courtship of all time, but what is there is just as poetic (and yes, as melodramatic) as I wanted. I can see why Katharine Cornell took the role of Elizabeth and ran. It's a delicious, meaty part, and her father too is a carefully drawn abuser. Robert Browning is slightly underwritten, but I suppose we're meant to be already quite familiar with him. The brothers are unecessary, and it seems a waste to have the whole crowd of them, I think the weird humour about their clown car entry seems out of place. I was absolutely rooting for Henrietta and I would've like to see more of the three sisters' relationship, instead of some of the slightly inane conversations. Additionally this is one of those fabulous old plays where the stage directions alone make it worth the read: 'he bends down and kisses the protests from her lips'

"Robert, if we were to say good-bye to-day, we should have nothing but beautiful memories of each other to last to the end of our lives. We should be unhappy: but there are many kinds of unhappiness. Ours would be the unhappiness of those who have put love away from them for the sake of love. There would be no disillusion in it, or bitterness, or remorse."

A rather commonplace dramatization. The fun of the family size is well conveyed, but the gravity of its despot insufficiently portrayed. No mention of Ba's addiction to laudanum, though the issue of porter is obliquely glossed. Nor any real foreshadowing of the fact that Ba's father never, to his death, forgave her for running away with Robert.

At first this seemed like a cute story, an invalid girl finds love when she thought she would be alone forever. On going further into the play you find that her father is very controlling the point of creepiness. Casey and I read this together and the end scene with the dad telling his daughter a few secrets and then him going nuts...well, let's just say it was disturbing but very well written.

At the tender age of sixteen I read and reread this lovely book. This is one of the most romantic stories in history. The romance between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett and her fathers refusal to approve of their marriage. The edition I had was Published by Little, Brown, And Company, Boston , 1935. It contained photographs of the 1930's Broadway stage production.
