The Coyote and a One-Armed Man is the action-packed second book in the One-Armed Detective series. If you like suspense and mystery combined with a high-stakes mission into a foreign country, then you’ll love B.D. Lawrence’s thrilling private detective novel.Buy The Coyote and a One-Armed Man today to learn if Lefty Bruder and his team can accomplish their dangerous mission.
B.D. Lawrence has always loved reading fiction. Ironically, though, his worst subject in high school was English. One night, sitting in a master's level computer programming class, daydreaming about vigilantes, he decided to give writing a try. Out of that came his first novel, which went nowhere. That was many years ago. During his writing journey he’s dabbled in several genres, including mystery, suspense, science fiction, fantasy, and literary fiction. He currently is focusing on crime stories of justice, vengeance, and redemption. He hopes his Lefty Bruder private detective series will not only entertain lovers of P.I. fiction but will also help fight the scourge of human trafficking, as B.D. Lawrence is going to donate half of all his profits from that series to organizations helping to fight human trafficking.
This was a really exciting read. George (Lefty) is on a crusade to find and return stolen girls to their families. He finds a benefactor who is willing to bankroll his work and also supply assistance. In looking for one of their own, an autistic girl, they also find another two girls taken by the same people. When the Mexican cartel is involved, it's never a simple extraction. Be prepared for lots of twists and turns along the way. Jean, ARC Team
What a ride! The Coyote and a One-Armed Man is a tense, exciting, Christian thriller. Lefty, a one-armed private eye, and Eileen, his partner (and his all-important connection to the Ottumwa police department), dive into the world of drug cartels and sex trafficking to rescue a teen named Talia. Of course, the job isn’t that simple. It grows exponentially both in the number of people involved and the location, starting in one Iowan city and reaching all the way to Mexico.
Talia is autistic, and it makes her situation even more vulnerable. Even when she’s in contact with people who can help her, she isn’t always able to do what she needs to do. I just wanted to wrap my arms around the poor child!
Lefty is hilarious. He makes jokes about his arm, and his banter with a teen named Darlene made laugh.
As for Eileen, she’s a woman of faith, and the reader gets a glimpse at her prayers and the strength of her faith. She’s also smart and capable. She wears a prosthetic leg, so when she and Lefty are together, they draw a lot of stares.
There are high action scenes throughout the book: car chases, explosions, gun fights, and hand-to-hand combat. The car chases and gun fights had me holding my breath, and Lawrence sure knows how to write a hand-to-hand combat scene. Lefty is trained in martial arts, and I could follow the fight and all of Lefty’s impressive moves.
The settings are perfect for a thriller, and I could picture the story playing out on the big screen. Talia is held in a bleak, smelly, dark, warehouse kind of place in Arizona. Lawrence conveys the hopelessness of Talia’s surroundings. Then the desert (and its cholla cacti!) come into play. Later, there are scenes at a Mexican drug lord’s compound. The compound is lavish and intimidating. And the scenes at the empty container yard are scary.
An unidentified character keeps following Lefty around. Whenever Lefty glimpses the stranger, the man felt foreboding on the page, and I worried about Lefty and Eileen… and then I’d hurry and read faster to see if Lefty and Eileen were okay. Eventually Lawrence tells the reader the stranger’s identity; the reveal is fun.
Overall, thriller and suspense readers will love this book. Lawrence is brave for writing a Christian fiction book about a very serious, sobering topic (sex trafficking). Lots of action, lots of fun, and dappled with moments of humor and faith. Five stars!
I read The Coyote and a One-Armed Man through Kindle Unlimited.
Rescue Across The Border This book is part of a series that would best be enjoyed when read in order. Each episode is a complete story, but future stories are built on past stories. It also seems that our cast of characters increases in each story and it gives a fuller understanding of how each person became part of the group. In this episode, our hero is tasked with recovering 2 young girls who have been sold into the sex trade. The action just never stops! This is a clean story with minimal foul language, no bedroom scenes, no gore, and minimal violence. Some Christian faith is shared in the story. It adds depth and is important to the story. It is not overwhelming but is very present. I can't wait for the next book to come out!
An exciting read about a serious issue (human trafficking) that held my interest from the first page. Good moral values here. Some interesting characters that I hope to read more about in the future. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
