“This heart is tired. This heart is battered. But this heart is trying to survive.”
Are these the things we whisper to our hearts, as we bravely go through our day-to-day life?
The heart tries to beat courageously for us, but there are days when we feel defeated because it has gone through so much battle for us. Sometimes it runs to chase perfection and sometimes it struggles to overcome insecurities.
At each turn where we feel like we’re grasping what we thought was perfect but somehow end up feeling dissatisfied and worn out. We become engulfed in the pains of dealing with our endless imperfections–because we fail to see anything beautiful about us.
In Hearts That Remember, author Sa’diyya Nesar tenderly leads the journey of exploring the meaning of beauty and it starts with our tired and battered hearts.
This book invites us to create a space for the heart to rest and be happy by embracing our imperfections. Allah’s definition of beauty isn’t the same as the perfection we chase. He looks at our hearts–the one that is always in remembrance of Him.
“Verily, with the remembrance of Allah (SWT) do hearts find rest.” (Qu’ran, Surah Ar-Ra’d : Aayah 28)
Hearts that Remember is a captivating and deeply moving book that takes readers on a heartfelt journey of self-discovery, faith, and emotional resonance. Through eloquent prose and beautifully crafted poems, the author's words touched my soul, evoking tears and a profound sense of connection. This book arrived in my life at the perfect time, and I found myself relating to every chapter. Sadiyya's ability to infuse spirituality and reflection into her storytelling is remarkable. "Hearts that Remember" deserves to be widely read and cherished for its ability to inspire and purify hearts. A truly beautiful and inspiring book that I wholeheartedly recommend.
I cant remember much on overall content if the book since I read it on June (I guess? Few days after KLIBF 2023.
This collection reflects the battles most of us go through. feelings of inferiority, regrets, wasted potential, heartbreak, and more.
What makes this book especially meaningful is the author’s openness in sharing her own struggles, particularly as a person with a disability navigating society. Her reflections carry both pain and hope, making her voice stand out. One of the most beautiful aspects is how she pairs her writing with the names of Allah, offering poems that bring comfort and reflection.
I only wish the chapters had a clearer structure, the mix of advice, reflections, and poetry sometimes felt a bit scattered, with styles clashing.
Still, it’s a thoughtful and reflective read, one that reminds you that healing and hope can be found even in life’s hardest struggles.
Would you agree if I said that we deal with the matters of heart everyday?
Would you agree if I said that these matters of hearts make us tired sometimes?
Would you agree if I said that sometimes we feel like questioning why do other people make it so easy in their lives?
Would you agree if I said that sometimes we feel like we don’t know what we are doing and we feel like giving up?
Your feelings matter and they are valid. Being normal human beings, we can’t run away from those feelings. Sometimes we become sad and angry at certain things, but we do know we could do better. There are ways of how we can improve that. It could be a long process, but we need to trust Allah for that.
The author, a TEDx speaker, was born with muscular myopathy which certainly hinders her physical disabilities. That’s when she started writing poems to Allah, concerning her feelings. Thus, these poems become the reflections where she ponders upon her thoughts about her feelings regarding her predicaments.
The author is in the opinion that, the reason we have been feelings certain ways is because we are too consumed about all the distractions around us which makes it difficult for us to achieve ‘qalbun saleem’ also known as the sound heart. A situation where we trust Allah’s plans for us although they might not be something to our dreams. A situation where we strive towards goodness and sincerity, content of our lives no matter what and being happy for others.
Sometimes, we are too preoccupied with the judgment of others towards us and making ourselves fight for a place in the social conformity, we tend to lose ourselves, our authenticity. That could probably cause our restlessness and battles in our hearts. We become unhappy.
Our hearts are meant to remember, but in order to do that, we need to remove that superficial surface and turn to the remembrance of the Greatest, Allah SWT, and the author has stated that we can do this through the remembrance of Allah’s 99 beautiful names. These remembrance of Allah, is also a form of supplication which can help to strengthen us in safeguarding peace in our hearts. Only through the remembrance of Allah that we would be able to project the right actions and decisions for ourselves.
What I love about this book, are all the poems written by the author. They are genuinely beautiful that I think my heart has been touched deeply of them. It shows that the author really poured our her heart through them.
We may not realise that Allah SWT has never ever stop loving us and pouring His love and mercy towards us. He has given us signs upon signs throughout our lives that sometimes we do not realise. Sometimes He answers our prayers by not giving us what we want because He knows that is the best for us.
We will remember. Our hearts will remember that if we submit ourselves to the One and Only, Al-Ahad.
This is definitely not a book for you to just tick off from your reading list. It should be our everyday companion. It should be a daily reminder. It should be a book for us to refer to whenever we feel we have gone astray. It’s a book that we can take our time with, so that our hearts can become the;
I thought I've read a normal self-help books or self healing books like any other books out there. But it turned out that this self-help books assisting us in getting back our lives in line with what Allah SWT wants us to.
And the author reflected it through the names of Allah. One thing that I was impressed is the poems of the names of Allah..mashaAllah, I couldn't even describe it how beautiful the poems are. And ya..my fav poem is An-Nur (The Light).
Every battles that we are struggling in life, be it inferiority, regrets, loneliness, jealousy, insufficiency, broken heart, financial struggle...how pretty the writings are when the author relate it with the names of Allah SWT. The cure is there - to soothe your heart, to calm your thought. Everything will turn out pretty well if we go back to Allah, to His beautiful names. That's what the author describe it in Part 2 of this book on how to attain peace when we are facing many obstacles in life.
I have a love-hate relationship with this book, and was thinking either to give 3.8 score or a 4.0. But I've made my decision to give a 4.0 because I can feel my heart remembers Allah through her writing and there are some chapters that I feel connected to. This book can b considered a light reading, not heavy at all.
“He can delay the next stage in our lives from occurring so that our hearts have more time to rest.”
The author who has disability, tried to comfort herself with her differences and oddness from others in Islamic POV. Self-help book with some poems focusing on Asmaul Husna, basically. Light read.
The author, sister Sa’diyya has her own “difficulties” that she deals with on a daily basis, and her remembrance of Allah SWT, keeps her moving forward. Throughout the book, she shares her life experiences and serves them as examples right before she complements them with beautiful, heartfelt, consoling, encouraging poetries; highlighting the grandeur, and the “functions” of Beautiful Names.
The book taught us to rely only on Allah, yet always appreciate and show gratitude to the good people surrounding us. The book also taught us it is human to feel down and helpless, but embrace yourself, care for yourself better, look for Allah’s signs internally and externally, and try your best to have faith. Find strength in the remembrance of Allah. I pray that this book may heal more troubled souls as much as it inspires deeper enlightenment in our fellow readers.
This book is truly top tier! A beautiful bonus is that it includes poems for most of the names of Allah, each one offering comfort through its words. The author's writing is incredibly touching and eloquent, drawing me closer to Allah and making me long for His presence
