A half-human with a secret. A vampire with a plan.

In the new world where vampires rule alongside humans, Katerina Eli is a guardian in the Company of Essential Guardianship, a protection service for both species. When she receives an offer to protect a Regal Vampire Family, Katerina accepts the opportunity to put her past behind the CEG’s walls and subdue the beast that rampages deep within her. But what seems like a miracle never is.

Cast away from society, the Sephtis brothers are heirs to the Premier title, head of the Vampire Ministry, and ruler of their species. Besides their shared birthright, they hold one common interest: to take revenge against the father who drove their mother to her grave. When Alek Sephtis, the fourth oldest, is tasked to get rid of the new guardian, he’s granted the upper hand to end these petty retributions. Yet one’s plans can never quite go accordingly.

Bound by maintaining peace between their species, Katerina’s and Alek’s unlikely alliance will uncover more than they bargained for. Their blossoming attraction will resurrect buried lies. The future of a ruling title will dictate their end. And a monster will be their ultimate demise.

Honestly speechless. I was in a reading slump for a few months and this book officially got me out of it! Once I started Act Two I couldn’t put it down and I finished it within 24 hours. The character development, the romance, the plot twists. So much descriptive imagery. The ending is insane and leaves you wanting more. So excited for part 2!

“A Half-Human with a Secret,
A Vampire with a Plan.”🥀
omg, this book was unlike anything i’ve ever read in my life. coming 9/26 to Kindle!
4.5⭐️
0🌶️(flirting, kisses but that’s it, def wanted more)

this is a paranormal romance. though there’s definitely an underlying sense of mystery throughout the whole book.

tropes:
-forced proximity
-enemies to lovers
-slow burn
-dual pov
-fake dating ;)

why i took off half a star:
in the beginning, there was just excessive world building. i can kind of understand because i would assume this is going to be a series (it better be with that ending 😧), but it just got confusing in the first 4 chapters. and while i can understand that it’s needed, some of it wasn’t relevant to this current book (though it might be for the following ones) . also i wished there was spice, but it’s clearly a slow burn so i’m dying for book 2 😭

why you should read it:
1- the mmc is a vampire that gardens, plays piano for her, giggles with her, fake dates her, and blushes when she’s around
2- the fmc is confident, badass, not scared in a house full of vamps, has a soft spot for the vampire that smells like flowers🌸
3- you get that feeling where you feel like anyone could be the culprit, i didn’t guess it right😐

what it’s about in layman’s terms: (haha!)
there’s a world full of vampires and humans trying to coexist, except neither really seem to want that. then there’s the guardians (they have power like the vampires, only, there’s is temporary), they can sustain themselves on human food, or vampire blood. they are tasked to protect vampires who ask for their assistance.

well the sephtis family, is the oldest vampire lineage, and they go through, many, many guardians. all of them fleeing from their household, and no one knows why. finally, as a last resort, Katerina Eli is chosen to be their private guardian. but, she needs to remember to take her pills, because when she doesn’t, let’s just say stuff happens 🫣

she arrives, but they can tell she’s different somehow.. she doesn’t back down when they try to make her submit. how far will they go to get her to leave? how far will she go to prove she’s worthy of the position?

Alek Sephtis is tasked to get rid of her, but quickly discovers she could be the key to set his scheming into motion. Katerina and Alek discover an unlikely alliance that makes them share more time together. their attraction to each other seems to uncover buried lies.

there’s more.. you’ll just have to read and find out!
coming out 9/26 on KU! 🫶🏽

3.5 / 5 - I really wish goodreads would let us rate with half stars, but I'm rounding up because I enjoyed this book and I'm an absolute sucker for paranormal romances. Especially when vampires are involved.

There is *a lot* of world-building done at the start of this book. I felt like quite a bit of it was unnecessary for the story (though I understand why it's there, and it might be the groundwork for a series... and with the cliffhanger ending, I'd hope there's going to be a book two.) Once you get into it though, things start to fall into place and this was an enjoyable, quick read that I didn't want to put down.

Guardian takes place in a world where vampires and humans are currently co-existing and have a governing body to keep the peace. One of the royal vampire families has gone missing and as the CEG works to keep this news under wraps, another one of the vampire families (the Sephtis family) is doing everything they can to get the guardians that the CEG is appointing to their family to quit. Enter our MFC: Katerina, the latest guardian who is tasked with protecting the Sephtis family - and pretty much the last resort. She struggles with a challenging condition that requires her to take medication regularly. It's very important to the story, but on the surface appears to be a mental health issue but ends up being something much bigger. She accepts the task of being the Sephtis' guardian but it doesn’t go quite as she had expected. These brothers are a handful and try to get rid of Katerina right off the bat - but unlike their past guardians, she's not ready to back down. After being tasked to find a second way to make her leave, one of the brothers, Alek, realizes that Katerina may actually be helpful in taking down his brother instead, and an unlikely alliance is formed... that may just lead to something more.

This story has a strong political story unfolding in the background. There are a lot of moving pieces, several schemes, and alliances. Just when you think you've got things figured out, there is a new twist that makes you reconsider everything and go back to the drawing board. Without giving anything away, this story is very much a case of "trust no one." I'm very hopeful that this is going to be explored more in the future because I'm personally very interested in more of the interactions between the vampire families and seeing how humans and vampires actually interact.

If I had to critique one thing about this book, it would be the introduction of the brothers. Being introduced to all of the brothers at once and trying to get up to speed with what they were trying to plan was a lot to take in at one time, and I wish that had been spaced out just a bit more. Keeping track of Christopher, Noah, Kaleb, Jacques, Jacob, and Raphael and the plot to get rid of their guardian all in one go was just a bit much for me and I had to read over the chapter a few times to make sure I understood what was going on. But that is probably just a me problem.

Over all, I enjoyed this a lot. I think there's a lot of good here, and a lot of room for the story to continue on and expand. I hope it does because I want to see where Katerina and Alek's story goes.

And I also need Kaleb to get a swift kick from karma. That's all. ☺️

An addicting, paranormal romance told through the pov of both Alek Sephtis and Katerina Eli. Katerina, a guardian with the CEG, is tasked with protecting a regal vampire family. Though she struggles with her own inner demons, she accepts this task but it doesn’t go quite as she had expected. *cue the Sephtis brothers* 🤭 Without giving too much away, these brothers were a handful and didn’t make her job very easy. With this, an alliance formed between Katerina and Alek and later blossomed into something more.

Going into this book, expect fake dating, enemies to reluctant allies to lovers, slowburn, forced proximity and of course, dual pov! There were so many plot twists and the way the author wrote each character made me fall more and more in love with the story. Reading this sent me on an emotional roller coaster but I enjoyed every single minute of it! The cover is absolutely stunning and I cannot wait for the next book!!

i’m going to share some of my favorite quotes/highlights below so spoiler warning!!

spoilers below:

“They were the most dangerous features any of us bore because eyes confessed what lips bit away.”

“The past controls us while the future avoids us,” she would say, “but the present always reminds us that we have a purpose within our own existence. We have the will of choice, tomorrow determined by today and whether you want to live or be stuck in the unattainable.”

“Being with Katerina felt as natural as breathing. The greatest intoxication, the strongest craving. I wanted to be bound to it —to her— without escape.”

Oh wow what an ending. Guardian ends on an amazing cliffhanger. I desperately need to know what happens next! This book is new adult with no steam but still has sweet romance with some heavy make out scenes but nothing dirty. Katerina being the more teasing and dominant or lead in the relationship with Alek being the shy and blushing one is refreshing from the common alphahole and sunshine trope. Both characters are well written. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out, more information came to pass and I'd have to restructure my theory on what was happening next. I admit I did not see the ending of Guardian happening the way it did. I so appreciate when authors catch me off guard. The suspense in Act 3 is insane. There's betrayal from so many people throughout the entire book, then it's not betrayal but instead a misunderstanding, then it's betrayal again. My emotions are all over the place. I don't want to spoil the story for any reader but my advice is DONT TRUST ANYONE! I liked that KL Hernandez takes popular paranormal characters, like vampires and lycans, but gives them unique attributes instead of giving them all the stereotypical characteristics. The world building was also well done with the story setting being very vivid. I'd recommend this story to readers who enjoy paranormal thrillers or those who love books who keep them guessing what happens on the next page 🩵 can't wait for the next book

Despite its sometimes slow pacing, Guardian is guaranteed to keep you reading until the end. The romance is present (and will have you kicking your feet and giggling it up) but it’s placed second as the center of the story remains its protagonists’ complicated past and uncertain future. Even if you’re not fond of the genre, the overall tension and mystery, as well as the bond between Katerina and Alek, will keep you tethered to it until you finish it. The novel is just one giant puzzle, and just like Katerina, readers are left trying to solve it, surprised by what it all entails. I’m so glad there’s a second book because the first one (though it comes full circle) leaves you wanting more— not only because we want to see more of Alek and our girl (uncertain future, remember??), but because it felt like we were just entering the beginning of a chaotic and incredible world. It would be a crime not to have a sequel!

It’s giving twilight, aka I had the twilight instrumental soundtrack playing everytime I read this book.

Great first book to a series that I know is going to unfold secret after secret. You can definitely tell the author put in work putting together this story that just unravels bit by bit. The ending?! Give me the second book NOW.

Alek & Katerina, my heart ugh. I loved their relationships progression throughout the book. My favorite thing was reading Alek become more and more himself around her and opening up after years of keeping to the shadows of his family. The cliff hanger at the end, I can’t do it.

I hope Karma destroys Kaleb. Every curse word I could think of was screamed into this book when he unveiled his scheme at the end.

Overall really enjoyable book! 🧛

3.5⭐️ rounded up!

The Guardian is an interesting novel filled with secrets and schemes. In a world where vampires and humans are forced to coexist, there are the guardians- half human, half vampire creations that are meant to protect the top vampire families.

Katerina is a guardian with a dark secret that she tries to drown in medications that numb her. But when she is assigned to be the new guardian to a notoriously horrible vampire family, that secret becomes harder and harder to keep from the surface.

This was an interesting book for me, I have definitely never read anything like it. It could get a bit confusing at times, but overall it was an intricate story. However, it did take me a little while to feel any real emotional connection to the main characters.

Guardian by K.L. Hernandez

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book! I normally stick to contemporary romance but wanted to branch out. It has some of my favorite tropes like fake dating and forced proximity. Having not read many paranormal romances, it took me a second to really get into it but when I did it was over. I enjoyed the world building, tension between the two main characters and even the political subplot. There were twists and turns that had me guessing the whole way through. All of it had me intrigued until the very end. I’m so excited for the second book. Thank you so much to K.L. Hernandez for sending this book to me!

Tropes: dual pov, fake dating, slowburn, forced proximity, political intrigue, and LGBTQ+

The author had me hooked from start to finish!
This book gave me that nostalgic 2000s grungey vampire feel and it’s what I have been missing and this book delivered. The characters and world building in this book is so good, the author does a good job at setting everything up. The female lead, Kat, is an absolute badass who doesn't take any crap from anyone. I loved the fact that this book was a dual POV and seeing the chemistry between Kat and Alek was so good, I need more of them! The cliffhanger this book left me on… I need the second book to come out already. I was not expecting the plots twists that took place. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read the rest of this series.

I found guardian by K., L. Hernandez to be a very fun and interesting paranormal romance. The spice is extremely light, but I assume that it will ramp up throughout the series to a certain extent.

I did find the world building and character intros a little dense in the beginning of the book. There are a lot of characters, and they are kind of just thrown at you, and it takes a while to get your footing as to who is aligned with who and what their motivations are. But once you get that down honestly, the book is just a lot of fun. There is a bad ass female main character that is absolutely interesting and can hold her own in a fight.

The relationship between the two main characters was very sweet and fun to read. They had great chemistry and I enjoyed that part of the story immensely. I can't wait to read more in the series when it's released to see what happens.

Honestly I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t like it because I’m not the biggest fan of political subplots, however while this book does have just a bit of it it doesn’t take up too much of the story. The romance between the characters is well written and the plot twists were just amazing. I was like halfway through and thought “ok I think I know how this will end” and I was wrong but that’s good cause the ending I had was nothing compared to the actual ending. I’m so ready for the next book especially with the cliffhanger.

I had high hopes for this book, but with grammatical errors, plot holes and a story line that was all over the place, it failed to deliver. Zero spice and I will not be continuing this series.

I found this book on tiktok, and the author is not only a very nice person, it is also clear from the contents of this book that she cares deeply for these characters. Therefore I feel like attempting a thorough review for the first time.

Firstly I want to give praise for the romance in this story. A lot of authors fail to create chemistry between their two love interests when romance is not the only theme, and this is NOT the case for this book. I genuinely felt the connection growing between our two main characters. I enjoyed watching Aleks care for Katrina grow throughout the book and it was entertaining and lovely to witness.

I did enjoy this book. However, I think this book had a lot of world building that I was overwhelmed by. While the book is short I don't recommend skimming because a lot of the world building is sandwiched between interactions. There are also a LOT of characters, and one is named "Catalina" along side the main character "Katerina", and this got confusing a few times. All in all, they're pretty hard to keep up with upon initial introductions.

basically, This book was a lot and I sometimes felt like the plot was being dumped on me all at once. However I get the feeling this is to set up for a second book, In which case I think there is a LOT of room for new and exciting things to happen. As I got to the end of the book and things were falling into place, I can confidently say it will be worth my time to read a continuation. As far as debuts go, this one is excellent and I can only imagine it getting better.

All I can say is wow… I have never really had a book hook me from beginning to end and this book definitely had me stuck to the pages. The author did such an amazing job with the world building, character arcs, relationships between them and plot. I’m not much of a reader but I definitely fell in love with this book and I can’t wait to read their future work!
