THE ADVENTURES OF KIRK ROGERS: INSIDE THE MOON by CJ Boyle is a book that I'd had in my TBR pile for a long time. I am a huge fan of classic sci-fi, humor, and over-the-top space opera action. The title and cover promised all of this and more. However, my TBR pile is a mountain and I never got around to reading it. However, I heard the author was releasing an audiobook so I decided to listen instead.
Lauren Rogers is the sister of the square-jawed Air Force pilot and astronaut-to-be Kirk Rogers. Unfortunately, she has few dreams of her own due to the fact that she's dying of kidney failure and has been for most of her life. Circumstances change for them both, though, when she's kidnapped by a mysterious force and finds herself in the hollow jungle-like paradise of the moon!
Kirk, desperate to get her back, takes advantage of recovered alien technology to journey up to the mysterious alien structure that had been built long before humanity crawled out of the primordial ooze. There, they will unlock a fantastic mystery alongside their oddball and quirky associates. Hopefully before the Sun explodes in a few days.
It's a surprisingly more serious book than I expected. I was expecting something verging on parody but instead got a deep and thoughtful science fiction novel that explored its deliberately silly premise in a serious way. This is a story about our protagonists discovering the moon is hollow and full of alien artifacts but has a lot of fascinating personal moments between the protagonists. Rarely do I encounter that in traditional fiction let alone indie and I want to give the author props for it.
Despite Kirk Rogers being the titular character, I actually believe Lauren Rogers is the real protagonist. A character who has struggled with a debilitating and (eventually) fatal condition, she perseveres with quiet inner strength. You want her to find some kind of miracle cure inside the moon and go on to live a normal life.
There's a lot of fun in the book as well, including plenty of references subtle and otherwise to past science fiction properties. These are never disruptive to the narrative and are special treats to those who are long term fans of genre fiction. I especially loved all the references to the old Buck Rogers TV show.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book and think fans of science fiction in general will enjoy it. The narration is done by a fantastic voice actor and while it was a bit disconcerting to have the story open on him with Lauren, he does a great job with all the other voices. I also recommend the audiobook over the ebook version due to that stellar performance.

There are times when you need to challenge your mind: perhaps a whodunit that keeps you in the dark until the last page or a character driven drama that leaves the reader teary eyed. The Adventures of Kirk Rogers – Inside the Moon by C.J. Boyle is not one of those books and will instead delight the reader and bring a smile to one’s face.
This story was reminiscent of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It is a light hearted read mixed with colourful characters, easter eggs, and geek humour that is sure to tickle your funny bone. True to form, this science fiction saga would play well as a radio show, television series, or even a movie… minus the sexy aspects, of course.

This book has so many fun homages to sci-if and pop culture tropes that it could have fallen into parody...but it doesn't. I congratulate Boyle on giving us light-hearted fun, but with a truly great adventure in the process. That is a hard combination to manage! I thought the epilogue a bit long, but I have to say she did a great job of bringing the story to a great conclusion, while leaving the door open to further adventures. I have zero tolerance for authors who don't bring their stories to a conclusion because they want to sell the next installment. Boyle gave us a great ending here, while leaving us interested in what might happen next. She gave us identifiable and interesting personalities with all the right tensions between them. I am intrigued to explore everything else she has written.

I read this book in one pass. It’s good. A little plodding in places. But good. Interesting characters. Good scene transitions. Pretty believable concept. I look forward to the next installment.

Science Fiction at its best. While it carries its own style and technology, it ranks right there with Niven, Asimov and the other masters.
Nobody is kidnapped by aliens, just random people who find themselves stranded in a giant ship and have to learn to survive together. Brother and sister, lovers, sentient animals, cyborgs with personality, all build an interesting story that keeps the reader turning the pages. Thanks CJ

4.5 Stars! Let me just say, this was a fun book! The Moon is a spaceship for crying out loud!! I will never look at it the same again. The characters are all very relatable, some likable some not so much. The modern geeky references had me laughing. In all of it's space-opera silliness, this book has a real story of the love between a brother and sister and true sacrifice.

Ok now I’m dumbfounded !
Lately I’ve been listening to C. J. Boyle books and each and every one of them is absolutely amazing.
I just don’t get how an author can jump from genre to genre and always write something so beautiful every time !
From serious Science Fiction to mystery Science Fiction and Romantic Science Fiction and now a somewhat Comedy Science Fiction, all beautifully written with an amazing imagination which just grabs you and don’t let you go from the beginnings till the ending and always an excepted twist but still surprising.
As I said one hell of an author, all she touches turn to gold and some spices of Star Trek included here !!!
Once again the author have picked the perfect narrator for the book, Jared Kedzia narrating is absolutely perfect for each character, a perfect job for creating a great audiobook.
And again I’m stuck with the first two in audio of a series of four hoping for the next two to be narrated and somehow getting my hands on them for reviewing.

Humorous sci-fi
This is a book you'll want to read for fun. As you can tell from the title, it's like humorous sci-fi. If you've ever seen a movie called "Amazon Women on the Moon," you'll understand.
In a series of events, several people end up inside the moon. One is Laura Rogers who is dying of kidney failure. Her brother, Captain Kirk Rogers, is trying to locate her and discovers she is inside the moor, so he steals a space ship and goes to rescue her.
The story is unfinished so you can buy the second book to finish the story.

C.J. Boyle writes an interesting adventure of aliens and siblings and scary creatures and space travel. Yep, all packed into one intriguing fun story that draws the listener in the longer it goes. The narrator was very good and added nuances to the storylines and characters.
If you are looking for an adventure that takes you out of this world and back, this is it. Even Ralph Kramden would enjoy this.

Space Opera
An easy read along the lines of a Classic Space Opera story, enough drama, action, and novelty to keep the reader engaged. A lot of nods to pop science fiction, through out the story, some obvious some not but fairly entertaining. Not hard science fiction but entertaining. A fair number of classic TV style moments in the story but enjoyable.

Enjoyable Read
The characters were amusing and interesting. I look forward to reading more of this series. The plot with the origin of the moon was an interesting take on science fiction.

Inter series mix-up
I'm liked the idea of mixing Star Trek, Buck Rogers, Lost in Space and Big Bang Theory, but felt a little more humour could have been achieved from the mix.

Finally, reading something has satisfied my itch. I have been looking for something like Mutineer's Moon or CADICLE. Really enjoyed this one.

I took a listen to C. J. Boyle's sci-fi book, The Adventures of Kirk Rogers Inside the Moon the first installment of The Kirk Rogers Series. It was a fun story that had me grinning and thinking for at least a week after I listened to it.
The unique world-building stood out as the key factor of this book, an aspect that I always appreciate.
Kirk Rogers, a devoted older brother who's willing to go to any length, like stealing a spaceship, to rescue his younger sister, Laura. What unfolds is a series of unexpected events that lead the two of them into an entirely different realm—inside the moon itself!
Once there, they form some unusual and endearing friendships, [spoiler alert] one of which is a giant spider, someone known as The Dangerous One, and more. The story arc is top-notch, and the characters are relatable and charming despite familiar tropes. Again, her excellent world-building is what I keep coming back to, almost as if the environment was a kind of character of its own.
The story pays homage to all things sci-fi, sprinkling in subtle nods to beloved classics. While the story carries some familiar themes, it does so with a fresh and imaginative take on the concept of the moon.
For me, no audiobook is complete without a good narrator, and in this case, Jared Kedzia didn't disappoint. He pulled off both male and female voices as well as distinct characters.

While some minor line editing issues occasionally pulled me out of the story, they were minor and the sheer fun and creativity of the narrative won out. As an author, this point is a common criticism of mine, even for traditionally published novels, so probably won't impact others.

Entertaining
I must start by admitting that I'm not used to modern literature. I usually read Jules Verne, Charles Dickens and Wells, occasionally. That said, this book felt rushed. There's lots of action, which is nice and keeps you entertained but sometimes the transitions are very abrupt. I can mention for example the way romance happens, some couples get together for lack of better options, those two girls felt more like bodies than real people. The solution Steven found to the cannon being blocked also made me think that Sheldor could've done that on his own without all the trouble. In my opinion as a simple reader, it would be more profitable to avoid writing for the masses, focus on the book's specific audience and adjust the pace accordingly. I probably am going to read book two because reviews are better, maybe it'll involve more sci-fi and be better developed.

After reading several descriptions online, I expected this book to be entertaining and humorous. I wasn’t disappointed. Filled with so many campy sci-fi (and geek) references that I lost count, this imaginative story never failed to put a smile on my face.
C. J. Boyle filled the pages with wit, Easter eggs, and heart. From a giant talking spider, to a quirky android caretaker, to a crazy dog lady (oh, there’s more)… every chapter had something completely out of left field.

C.J. Boyle's The Adventures of Kirk Rogers: Inside the Moon is a comedic romp that is very reminiscent of the golden age of science fiction/fantasy serials. What if the moon were hollow? And what if it was not a natural satellite but a space ship? And what if such things as telepathic spiders and intelligent androids still lived there??
This is the entertaining premise of the inaugural book of Boyle's Kirk Rogers series. It was very entertaining and I will definitely be reading further entries in this series.

What a curious book. Spiders can be friendly! This is a book for nerdy folk, sciency-focused, with a good command of science fiction television/movies.
One main character is Captain Kirk (see what i mean?) Rogers and another is Laura (middle name Croft). And not to forget, Sheldor (yes, him). There is a big spider, CheeChee, and her children, the premature Junior and his 12 sisters. Some other characters also. Terminal renal failure gets healed! Yay science fiction. there is cloning. We have to move on to additional books in the series to see how the whole cloning thing works out.

To my way of thinking this was more of a spoof or a farce so I didn't expect the plot to be the best. I derived a good deal of my amusement by seeing the abundance of different sci-fi shows and characters and plot elements the author could make reference to in one book and still make it tie in to his plot. It was clever in that way. If you like books that reference other sci-fi this is the book to read.

I was unsure what to expect from this book and at the start of the book I was still very much on the fence.
As I got further into the book the characters definitely brought things together in a quite unexpected way.
Some of the parts are very much lifted from other sci fi stories but other parts are genuinely original and very good.
Overall a ok read.
I have already picked up the next in the series as I want to see which direction the stories go.

Good Enough
Definitely written for a young reader, the storyline and plot are easily followed and character development is slow but steady. Several emotional scenes, and a few very tense events, keep the reader engaged. This book ends with some story threads resolved and one major thread leading into the next installment.
