The Orchard

Rate this book
MP3 CD Format "She realized there was peace right here in the midst of this heavenly sort of place, despite the unpredictable storm churning around her family." For generations, Ellie Hostetler's family has tended their Lancaster County orchard, a tradition her twin brother, Evan, will someday continue. Yet when Evan's draft number is called up in the lottery for the Vietnam War, the family is shocked to learn he has not sought conscientious objector status, despite their Old Order Amish belief in non-resistance. The faraway war that has caused so much turmoil and grief among their Englisher neighbors threatens too close to home. As Evan departs for boot camp, Ellie confides her disappointment to Sol Bontrager, the brother of her best friend and cousin to her new beau, Menno. In contrast to Evan, Sol is a conscientious objector. Despite Ellie's attraction to Menno, she finds herself drawn to Sol's steady presence as they work together in the orchard. Suddenly, it feels as if everything in Ellie's world is shifting, and the plans she held so dear seem increasingly uncertain. Can she and her family find the courage to face a future unlike any they could have imagined?

Two reasons drew me to this book, no it was three things. First was that I love Anything written by Beverly Lewis. Second the cover is breathtakingly beautiful with the spring blossoms on the trees. Third I enjoy any book written that goes back in history and this book’s story covers the early years of the Vietnam war in the seventies. It’s a story about an Amish Family that made their living from an orchard that grew peaches and apples. The main characters in the story are Amish 19 year old twins Evan Hostetler and Ellie Hostetler. All characters in this story play an important role and are strong personalities. Even though the Amish are conscientious objectors of war, the Vietnam war changes their life when a member of the Hostetler family decides to enlist when his number comes up in the draft call. This book was very realistic and I thought it to be original. It covers a two year span in this family’s life and when the end comes I just wanted the book to go on and on. I wanted to cry with the family and rejoice with the family. This is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year.

I highly recommend this book to readers of Amish Fiction, Historical Fiction, and Christian Fiction. It can be read as a stand alone.

I purchased my own copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are my own.

This is a Historical Amish Fiction. I just found this story to not pull me into it, and it was a very slow moving story. I did not think this was the author for me. I do not think this is a bad book, but it is just not the book from me. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

I am the daughter of a Vietnam vet, so this book was very interesting to me from that aspect. I have read several Beverly Lewis books and she is always my go to when I need a good up beat, Amish read. I can always count on her for a light-hearted, pick up.

This is the story of Ellie and her twin brother, Evan. Evan is at the age where he had to register for the draft, but unlike other Amish men, he did not register as a conscious objector. Which that brought a whole different aspect to the book. It follows the day to day life of running an orchard in their community, and who will be the next sibling to take that over. But with Evan turning his back on the "Community", it is clear who will be doing that. Ellie has many ideas of how to expand and make the orchard better. It also follows Ellie during her courting season and how the times and what Evan did brought out people's true feelings.

I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to others. Thank you Netgalley and Bethany House for this advanced copy of this book.

I enjoyed this book about set of twins named Ellie and Evan. Evan decided to sign up for the draft against everyone’s wishes. This book is that in the 1970s when the Vietnam war was taking place. Of course things do you in on a good note but there were a lot of times that Evan‘s family did not know where he was and feared that he had died. I enjoyed reading about the apple orchard because it reminded me of the Samantha Price books that I enjoy.

This was an interesting book and the first I’d read that featured an Amish man drafted into war. I loved that it was set during the Vietnam War. I would like more fiction in this era, if accurately portrayed.

The peach and apple orchard was such a great backdrop for this story featuring multiple generations of a single family. From little kids to grandparents, this book highlighted the ins and outs of family life, including daily troubles and how each member dealt with such matters.

The courtship was sweet. It was fun to see how the challenges to the relationship involved health, friends, and family. The balance was good, and I enjoyed seeing how the relationship progressed.

Disappointments were that baptism was by sprinkling and that an apply type’s history was “adjusted.”

Take each day as it comes.

Ellie Hostetler's world is going thru many changes. The English world has affected her family with the Vietnam War. Her twin brother Evan has a friendship with an Englisher and his sister. That relationship had affected a decision of going to war and not being a conscientious objector as his family encouraged him. Ellie is torn about her brother's choices and seeks to understand why he made that choice and how he will be when he comes back if he comes back. It seems like all her relationships are taking a shift that she has to reexamine. Her brother, her best friend, and her new beau.

What I liked about this story is Ellie found comfort and an anchor in the Lord but also in the Orchard her family owned. She was reminded of spiritual truths about love, sacrifice, and how God provides. God's provision many times is in our relationships that we do not always see but in waiting, his love for us is revealed. Having the patience to see that is what brings hope. I also was encouraged by her brother's story. His good intentions to his English friend but his realization of what really matters in the end. I loved how the story ended. If you like Amish romance with a little historical value, you will appreciate this one.

A special thank you to Bethany House Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

This book takes us back to the Vietnam time period. I enjoyed the book, but have to admit that it took a while for the book to grab my attention. It seemed a bit slow starting for me. It wasn't my favorite Beverly Lewis book. But once I got into the book, it moved a bit faster and became more interesting to me.
The book deals with the struggles of the conscientious objectors to the war and those left behind them and dealing with the thoughts of not seeing their family members again. The romance was sweet.

Review:
Its been awhile since i last read an Amish Fiction Novel by Beverly Lewis but i have to say this one like all the others did not disappoint since its so enjoyable and interesting to read about especially since ive never read a book about an Amish Man wanting to join The Army during Vietnam War in The Winter of 1970.

The Characters were very intriguing and enjoyable to read about. Ellie, Ruthann, Leah, and Soloman were my favorites. I loved learning about their connections to each other as well as their life stories.

The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually Lancaster County and Bird-in-Hand PA especially when the scenery was described since my parents and i vacationed their in 2010s.

I do wish this was part of a series cause id love to see where Evan, Ellie and Soloman are now or what's next for them in life.

Overall Another Phenomenal Amish Fiction Novel by Beverly Lewis!! Can't wait to read more by Beverly Lewis in the future!!

My thoughts: The Orchard is Ms Lewis's newest release, available for preorder. It is a bit of a historical, set around the Vietnam War, I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do her books. It was telling, mostly, and I couldn't get into the story. Fans of Ms. Lewis will probably love it... This story was a miss for me but check it out for yourself. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own.

4.25⭐. I don't normally read Amish books. I've tried in the past but they don't usually appeal to me but the premise of The Orchard hit home. I very much enjoyed the book and truly connected with the characters. At the time of my reading, my son is preparing to join the military and all the anxiety that was felt by the characters mirrors my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will probably pick up more by this author.

The story revolves around the “conscientious objector” status during the Vietnam War era. Not all draft-age Amish men seek it.

The Hostetler family orchard has existed for generations & Ellie loves everything about it. She & the rest of the family are shocked to find her twin brother did *not* request the conscientious objector status and his draft number is low.

Evan goes to war.
-------------------------
My review ...
Other subplots are a romance for Ellie, the orchard’s future especially if Evan does not return, the Amish communities reaction to Evan going into the military, their treatment of the family, and the frightening threats of some Englischers for all Amish calling them draft dodgers.

The Orchard has a wealth of subplots but the story delves into an Amish family living through the experience of a son/brother fighting in a war, something the Amish do not believe in. One blessing the Hostetlers had, which was not mentioned, was “no news” since they do not have television or radios.

Books can bring back memories. You see, the Vietnam War wasn’t just an “era” to this reviewer. My husband flew literally thousands of hours in this war. He was stationed at Clark AFB, PI. Twenty-one days in Vietnam, three or four days ‘home’ — over and over. I was a new bride fresh out of graduate school. I volunteered as a Red Cross worker at the base hospital. I might cry once home but never in front of the guys. Men weren’t always sent home; some were so seriously injured they couldn’t be flown back to the States. Those were “my guys”.

Evan had not been baptized so his family did support him with letters. Remember this was long before cell phones. Every phone call cost the military personnel money — there was no setup for calling home.

The Orchard has a lot going on it it. Life doesn’t stop even when a loved one is serving in an active war. The orchard was the family’s principal livelihood, but who would take over if Evan went Englishe? An unmarried or married woman (if Ellie married) was not expected to “run a business”. Yet Ellie knew more about the orchard except for her Dat or Dawdi.

So why doesn’t The Orchard get 5 stars?
Two words … THE BEGINNING … that went on and on and on.
Until I was 25% into the book, I flat wasn’t interested. The author took forever to set the scene and introduce the characters. Fortunately, at that point, the book “took off”. Sometimes editor(s) and writing “assistants” get so familiar with the trees in the forest, that they forget that the reader doesn’t want to deal with a long, tangled forest to get to the story. I’ve never been an editor but I have been a Beta reader. My approach in that role is to read like a “typical” reader. If I have to stop and look at past pages, that is reported. If I am bored and can’t “buy into” a setting or scene, that is reported. And someone should have taken a RED pencil to the first 25% of The Orchard.

If the rest of the story had not been so good, the reduction would have been more than just one star. I still recommend the book but just remember, you’ll do some wading before you get to the “rest of the story”.

I received a complimentary e-ARC copy of “The Orchard” via NetGalley from the publisher, Bethany House, Bethany House Publishers. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

The Hostetler family has tended their orchard for generations and look forward enjoying its beauty for many years to come. Twins Ellie and Evan are the last children at home and the family fully expects Evan to take over the business. But when his draft number is drawn, Evan makes the difficult decision to enlist. Amid the tensions of the Vietnam war, Ellie's world starts to shift as well. Between her love for the Orchard and thinking of her future, she must find her way, all while awaiting for her brother's safe return.

Beverly Lewis' newest title, The Orchard, introduces the idea of what happens when a young man from a pacifist community goes off to war. What drives his decision? How does his community react? And how does a family survive when a son goes off to war?

I loved how honest this book was about a parents' emotions. Being a mom of an older teen, I often wonder if I could have done more in the time I've had. The chapters written from a parents perspective were relatable and rang true to what a lot of us feel. Ellie was also a relatable character as she often struggle with her brother's decisions and still missed him tremendously. Lewis did a good job of combining the emotions of pain, fear, and longing in the Hostetler family.

Overall, I enjoyed the plot twist in this one. The beginning was a little slow and I had to commit myself to seeing it through. But this book definitely took a different look at Amish life that hasn't been explored in Lewis' earlier works. A good book for anyone who enjoys Amish fiction.

*Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Wow! This is definitely one of my favorite books by Beverly Lewis.

The premise was so intriguing with it being set during the Vietnam and it definitely met up to my expectations.

I really like that Sol and Ellie got married, and I was able to see the beginning of their marriage. Very few books show that.

I really like that Grandpa's character, and even the Dad's character because He wasn't controlling and simply allowed Evan go to the miliary.

The only negative I have to say is the book was slow in the beginning. I really didn't start getting into it until Evan left for the military. But that didn't stop me from reading the book, and once I got to the middle of the book I read the rest very quickly.

Favorite Quote: "And then and there, Ellie was sure that God was indeed present everywhere, both in the wintertime orchard when all seemed dormant and fragile and in the dire conditions of Vietnam's jungles" (403).

I live in the Amish belt and know the stance on war is clear but I hadn't ever considered the draft playing into it. There was a section of a character who conscientiously objected the war/draft and was then stoned & attacked for doing so by complete strangers further emphasizes the hate to those not willing to serve. That was eye opening but even more so was that they never called the police or took him to a hospital but rather, cleaned him up and monitored his healing at home. Is that really how it would have played out? I'm not so sure, the Amish around me go to the same doctors the rest of us do, and use traditional medicine. Maybe that is something that has changed since Vietnam? I'm not so sure.

The Orchard by Beverly Lewis find Evan, a young Amish man, not signing up as an “conscientious objector” during the Vietnam War Era. Ellie and him are close but she doesn’t support his decision. This tale is penned in Lewis’ style with her characters, the struggles of the Amish community when Evan is drafted to go to war. Ellie loved her family’s orchard and had dreams for the future. What will happen while Evan is overseas to his family’s business and to him?

I borrowed this book from our library without obligation to write a review. I have shared my own opinion.

Ellie Hosteller resides in a large Amish community in Lancaster County with her parents and her twin brother Evan. The family owns a huge orchard supplying apples and peaches to restaurants and which they sell at their farm stand along with homemade pies, jams, and preserves made from their produce. Ellie believes where she lives is the best place in the world and though she wishes it could one day be hers, the tradition is that property/businesses go to the son when the father retires.

It is 1970 and the war in Vietnam is raging. The Amish are peace lovers and can be exempt from joining the service. Evan had been very close to Jack, an English friend during his "rumspringa" enticed by the "Englischer" novelties of technology and the things he is not accustomed to.

When Jack gets killed in battle, Evan feels unjustly guilty and becomes more obsessed with joining the service without applying for the exemption his faith allows. All family members and those in the community are upset by his attitude and behavior and try everything in their power to make him perceive how he was raised.

Ellie discusses her concerns about Evan with Sol Bontrager, listed as a conscientious objector and a close friend to Evan. She hopes maybe he can talk some sense into Evan, but her brother is stubborn and bullheaded.

It seems not only is Evan attracted to the English way of life, but Jack's sister has caught his eye. With love at stake and empathy for Jack's death, Evan pushes ahead to accept his duty. Seeing his number in the draft is low, he is quickly inducted into the Army much to the family's distress.

Ellie faces a lot of changes and does not know how to deal with them. First, the biggest change is in Evan, then her best friend Leah decides to take a job as a nanny for a single English mom in another city. What will Ellie do? Evan and Leah are both her closest confidants, and now she considers she is completely alone. Though friends with her cousin Ruthanne, they are not as intimate as she is with Leah and Evan.

Trying not to let her feelings get the better of her and hoping to take her mind off of things, Ellie plunges herself into her work of harvesting and baking. She becomes fond of Menno
Bontrager, a cousin to Sol, who is the most handsome and available single guy around, and she wonders if he will ever notice her. Meanwhile, Ruthanne is besotted by Sol Bontrager, Leah's sister. Before long the four go out on double dates that Ellie finds enjoyable.

Ellie writes to Leah constantly, disclosing her thoughts and feelings, and when Leah reports she'll be home soon, Ellie is happy. Still, the tension in Ellie's household is thick with worry about Evan. They are excited to get letters from him, but when he's shipped to Vietnam, the correspondence ceases and the anxiety at home becomes more intense.

Several members of the community start to ignore the Hostellers because of Evan's going against their ways. After a few dates with Menno, just when Ellie thinks there could be a relationship between them, he voices his negative opinion of Evan, which angers her and makes her decide she no longer wants to see him. Though she believes Evan was misguided when he left the "way" he is still her brother and she loves him deeply.

One day, the family is visited by government officials reporting Evan is missing in action. The only thing getting them through this nerve-wracking ordeal is their faith in God, and their prayers never cease. Then Sol is battered by several English young men who are angry because the Amish do not believe in fighting and are spared from entering the service. Ellie realizes violence is all over, and not only with the ongoing war. She ministers to Sol's wounds, and though they've been friends forever, a romance kindles.

All the while, the worry over Evan's missing status has them realizing how fragile life is, and all they can do is trust in their beliefs to find Evan alive. Ellie wonders if she'll ever be truly happy not knowing what happened to her twin. This novel demonstrates how the Amish also face problems and obstacles like others, yet their strong belief in family and the Lord sees them through and has them realize God is in control.

I enjoyed this book. I was in high school when young men were being drafted for the Vietnam War so the time period hit close to home for me. The story covered in more depth the struggles of the young men who were Conscientious Objectors, the anti war protestors, as well as those who were drafted and those who never made it home. The story covered a period of several years with a satisfying ending.

The best Beverly Lewis Amish story I've read in a long time!
Just simply couldn't put the book down!
Quite different from other Amish stories but I think thats what I liked what I liked about it.
I appreciated the faith filled themes throughout the book to help get this family through their storms of life.
Evan and Ellie are my two favorite people in this book. My heart hurt for them but most especially Evan. His journey seemed a little harder than Ellie's. Considering the decisions that he made in his choices.
I too agree that this is a prodigal son story and I think that's why it's one of my favorites.
As always Ms. Lewis has left my heart feeling full and satisfied. And I'm still thinking about the twins long after this book was finished!
Well done Ms. Lewis! It will be added to my 2022 list of favorites.
I won't say anything else about this book but I just want to recommend it to y'all!
You won't want to put it down until you've devoured the whole book!
I highly recommend!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

After reading some nonfiction books, I needed a light book, and this was a great choice! The book tells the story of an Amish family during the 1970s when the Vietnam war was going on. It broaches topics of pacifism and anger towards it. I love how the book ends on a happy note! It is a good read for teenage girls and up.

This was a good story about humility, rebellion, meekness, forgiveness, and strong family relationships that can only be found
in a family who loves Jesus and who thinks habitually on the words of God in the bible. I liked all of the characters, but the ones who
were most meaningful to me were Sol Bontrager, Ellie, and Dawdi Hezekiah. They were the glue that held the family together, in my opinion.
The dad, Lyle Hostetler, was a Godly man, who was a great example of perseverence and of truly adhering to the verses:[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. He was stretched beyond the limits of any parent, at one point in the story, and yet
he still didn't let his trust and faith in Jesus waver. He was a memorable example of what Godly men should be like.
I appreciate the professional and expert writing style of Beverly Lewis. I've read many of her books, and she did a good job of telling of the attitudes and social
evils of the Vietnam War era in America in an eye-witness type viewpoint. War protestors and war supporters were both represented accurately. I was in high school
during the war, and I do recall the same events, and the tv news showing the horrors of the war, and violence against pacifists, and against soldiers.
I highly recommend this book, it is several story lines in one, and all will keep the reader interested.

A new slant on this Lewis Amish story gives readers an idea of how attending a soldier's funeral might make some waves in her Amish community. The family's expansive fruit tree orchard plays a central theme in this tale. Come smell the early morning blossoms.

It is so refreshing to read books written by Ms Lewis. Not only are they true to life and full of knowledge about Amish lifestyles, it is very easy to like all the characters. There are Bible quotations and references to God, but this is not overwhelming. I believe this book correctly portrays what any family feels when one of them goes off to fight in a war. Throughout Evan’s time in the Army, his family kept their faith in God, believing He would return their son and brother to them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about Amish lifestyle and likes a good clean romance with a bit of a side story. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher.
