This Little Golden Book retells the story of how The Golden Girls met!
Ever wonder how Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sofia from The Golden Girls met? This beautifully illustrated Little Golden Book retells fateful episode 25 of The Golden Girls from 1986. It's the perfect gift for fans of the beloved series and Little Golden Book collectors of all ages!
This was a gift from my friend Tammy and I loved it! They had to alter the story a bit to make it kid-friendly (so there’s no Sophia coming into the kitchen to scare the ladies wielding a butcher knife). But, I digress. The best part was the bulletin board with all the references to other aspects of the show, like Fernando, Jasper DeKimmel, and Missster Burt Reynolds.
So cute and wildly funny! It was awesome all of the little details that the author took from the show and made to include (Hi, it's me Stan). It was also such a smart idea to take an iconic show and simplify one of the sweetest episodes to make a kids' book out of it. It's perfect for parents that love the show to read with their kids. Just like adults find the show funny, kids will be laughing out loud while reading this book, especially at the herring circus part. Lastly, the illustrations were amazing. They really did the show justice and conveyed the unique personalities of each of the characters.
So, I knew exactly what lines were missing as I read lol. Also Sophia does not scare the girls with a knife, which is one of my all-time favorite scenes - I also missed the I know the Shady Pines, the Shady Pines is lovely line, but you do get Sophia reminding the audience that it was a prison. I am planning on using this at the beginning of school - when we are all thrown together and have to make the best of it all.
A short book about how the women from the Golden Girls met. It wasn’t as funny as the show and I felt didn’t really capture the characters. Blanche’s hyper-sexuality was completely absent nor was Dorothy’s grumpiness present. Sophia was just there with no development at all. The only character really flushed out was Rose as we see her sweetness and quirkiness come through. This is the rare case where the show is better than the book.
I spotted this book in my local grocery store and couldn't pass up buying it for my Little Free Library. As a lifelong Golden Girls fan, I had to read it for myself first. The story is just a retelling of an episode of the show, but the illustrations are cute and it was a fun way to spend a few minutes reminiscing about a show I've loved for so long.
A storybook adaptation of one of the best episodes of the series! Kid approved of course. They edited out the language in dirty jokes - but I think they're still holds up :) a great introduction to the Golden girls for kiddos!
3.75 stars. Before writing this review, I must preface it by saying I have never watched the Golden Girls. The book describes how the girls met and recounts their first days of living together. I loved the art style of this book. It is beyond gorgeous.
Just a bit of fun. This was a holiday gift to me. In one very quick read, I learned the origin story of this show that I didn't watch but I know is beloved by many. I have seen clips, and I'm sure I would have enjoyed it. Now I can talk about the women as if I know them at least a little bit.
The art's adorable but the story's trash. I wanted to love this so much (I've had it preordered for eons and I tore open the box when it showed up this afternoon) but it's an oddly flat retelling of the episode that misses pretty much all of the charm, nearly every joke, and just plain sounds stilted when read aloud.
This adaptation of one of the most iconic episodes from The Golden Girls is funny. There some elements of the story that have been edited for language and adult situations. The one item that I loved about this version is they actually showed a herring being shot of a cannon~hilarious! This book is picture for the die hard Golden Girls fan.
One of my favorite episodes of Golden girls turned into a children’s story?! Love it- counted as part of my challenge this year because my toddler barely paid attention while I read lol.
The fact that this book exists made my day! I was so excited that I came across this while shelving at the store that I actually cheered a little bit, pretty sure people looked at me funny, but I don't care. This is a cute one, and I loved it.
