101 brilliant tips and tricks for anyone keeping chickens. Some really helpful ideas in here that I will certainly be trying. My chickens will be thrilled and spoilt rotten. My only issue is the chicken tutus. Why??!!! I am now going to have to find the time to make a flocks worth of colourful tutus for my chickens and upon completion attempt to get them all into a photo at the same time to add to the family gallery! Adorable .
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is both a Martha Stewart for chickens sort of book, as well as a good source for hacks that you should know. In between making curtains for the coop, and cleaning the glass of the said coop, you get practicle advice, such as the best way to make fermented treats, or what herbs are best to keep out mites.
And the Martha Stewart type tips are not bad, but I doubt I would ever make a nest out of an old chair.
So, take this with what it is worth, that some things, like mirrors for the coop are both cool and a neat trick, other things, such as building a swing might be more than you are up to doing.
Having chickens is not so much a hobby, these days, it is a way of life, and I totally believe in this, as I have been keeping chickens for over six years, and can't imagine a life without them, even if I don't make curtains for their coop.
So, yes, I would recommend this book, especially for the hardened veteren such as me, who thinks they know everything there is to know about chickens, and who doesn't mind admitting that this book gave some tips that I hadn't heard of.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
As chicken owners (new ones, especially) can get bogged down on what they should or should not use to ensure comfort, egg-laying efficiency, and optimal health, Steele has accumulated an honestly helpful guide into not only helping yourself and your chickens of all ages, but how to do it economically. This information is given in betwixt some gorgeous pictures from around the farm.
The hacks provided cover creative ways to feed your chickens nutrient-rich foods while also keeping them entertained (so they're not slowly pecking away at your fence line, for instance), keeping them in the best environment possible to lay, staving off infestations, applications to the garden, what to grow relatively easily, and how one could benefit from eggs around the home.
I definitely wish I had this book when I started keeping my hens. I have so much of what Steele's aggregated here that I cannot wait to implement.
Read it! Your chickens will thank you.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group, and Voyageur Press for the advance read.
This book absolutely makes me feel happy, the ideas are just brilliant, I even liked the hen tutu, and by the look of the hen, she thought herself smart. Hens could not lay well after sharing these absolutely glamorous surrounds. But don't get the idea that this is a book of just fluff, no this is a informative book from someone that is knowledgeable about keeping chickens. And there is more, it isn't only about the chickens, the book also has information on making and using eggs, herbs and lotions, as well as looking after the garden and coup with clever and natural ideas. This book is a pleasure to read, not only informative, but beautifully presented and a must for any anyone who wants the care and keep healthy chickens. Using recycle or natural materials this book is really exciting.
This is a cheap and cheerful viewpoint on chicken keeping. The author tells us at the outset that we are welcome to spend thousands on coops and equipment, if we'd prefer, but she finds that repurposing, mending and using old reliables like enamel pans does the job.
Depending on how much free ranging your birds do, you may want to give them the seed and seaweed mix with added insects recommended. I don't consider everything in the book a hack - a feed recipe isn't a workaround in itself. But I admire the application of ingenuity and re-use we are shown. The colour photos are lovely and might encourage some people to start keeping hens.
I'm pleased the author has shared her experience and I am sure most interested readers will pick up several bright ideas. I downloaded this book from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.
I love this book and I’m so glad I quickly tossed it into my cart at Tractor Supply (it was $25 so a bit pricey and could probably be found cheaper elsewhere. But don’t tell me cause I’ll feel bad!)
There are so many tips inside with plenty of photos and recipes that are simple. I’ll definitely be testing out natural egg dying next year and this month I might try the hair elixir. So it’s not just about raising chickens.
I did test out the feeder idea for our baby chicks using an old egg carton… fail lol! They used it as a way to scratch and fling feed all around the brooder.
I will keep this book close at hand and constantly reread for new ideas to test out!
This book is the best book on keeping chickens that I have read...I even enjoyed it more than the more popular chicken keeping books. It has gorgeous and helpful photography, extremely clever and cost saving tips and tricks, and is especially helpful for a diy project version of all things chicken care. This will definitely come in handy in the coming year for my family as we begin our rooky chicken keeping journey.
101 Chicken Keeping Hacks is a cheerful, upbeat look at ways to improve ('hack') chicken husbandry. Aimed at the newer suburban chicken wrangler, it provides a humorous look at simple ways of upcycling, repurposing, and reusing items which the reader might have lying around.
Written by 'Fresh Eggs Daily' blogger/media personality/chicken wrangler Lisa Steele and published by Quarto on their Voyageur imprint, it's 176 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is a very appealing, whimsical, and upbeat book. There are a bunch of cute decor ideas included (her chicken coop setup includes cute gingham curtains). There are tips and tricks for every area of chicken keeping. The hacks are arranged in chapters dealing with food, housing, outdoor areas & runs, raising chicks, chicken health & welfare, your (human) home use (hair rinses, egg storage, recipes, etc), and outdoor/garden.
There are a number of these ideas which are cute and whimsical and are utterly impractical. On the other hand there are a number of really good and practical ideas. It's a mixed bag. I really like the idea of repurposing and upcycling. There are bound to be some tips which are usable by most readers.
The photography is very clear and full of lovely, appealing, and healthy chickens. There's a useful resource list (aimed mostly at North American readers) and a handy index at the back of the book.
Well written and fun. Would make a nice gift for a beginning backyard chicken-herder (or soon-to-be).
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This was fun with some good images and tips. My Rating 4.5.
Since we have added our hen house this year, I thought this would be a good book to read. I loved the pictures of fluffy chickens, including some on swings and wearing tutus! There are good tips for cleaning the coop, the chickens and the eggs. There are some homemade recipes for food treats, herbal teas (I’m excited to try these) and homemade salves. I like the suggestion of sanitizing lotion at the pen. I am very careful to wash my hands anytime I pet the chickens (yes, they like to be petted), collect eggs or touch the coop and run gates.
I made note of herbs and treats that are healthy and those that are poisonous to chickens. the I know I won’t implement all of the ideas, but there are healthy ones and fun ones. I might not be making curtains to spruce up our coop but I will try the frozen treats. And I hope to get hubby to make a swing for the chickens to play on. The recycling ideas are wonderful too - wish I had more time for those. I certainly can recommend this to new chicken breeders and to those who love to learn fun ideas and things about chickens.
We have been keeping chickens for a few years now and I still consider myself a newbie at the whole thing. This book is fantastic for someone just beginning or even someone who may have had chickens for quite some time but is just looking for new ideas.
I enjoyed all of the recipes and DIY projects mixed in with all of the important information and each "project" tied in nicely within each section. I truly appreciated the advice of taking what you already have or find and making it into something that can function in your coop. There are some great suggestions for herbs to plant, items to use, feed ideas, and more. For a little fun, there are also some extra things like curtains for your coop or twinkle lights that are totally unnecessary but could certainly add character and whimsy to the hobby.
Content aside, the overall design and images are absolutely beautiful and contribute to the experience of reading it. It truly has that "homestead" feel. I would love to see it in print!
I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts in this review are my own.
I love this book! The overall design is wonderful. It is a delight to read. But more than that, the hacks seem to be the real deal. Of course, I have no practical experience yet – but her suggestions seem to be focused on saving money, providing the best for your chickens, and imparting a sensible perspective. I can definitely see me turning to this book time and time again when I finally get my own chickens.
There are so many clever ideas here, some very practical and some more for fun, but I enjoyed reading them all! I already have taken some ideas and put them into practice with our little chicks and have noted several recipes for homemade cleaners and recipes that I want to try along the way as we grow our backyard flock.
= Read this book from NetGalley UK in exchange for a fair review. =
A coffee table book on raising chickens. It’s informative on the DIY recipes and such. I figure practicality (in regards to the design of said book) wasn’t very high on the priority checklist. I would appreciate it in a more portable format with more readable font (style & size).
Read every word and loved it! Very engaging book. Lots of lovely ideas, I especially loved the hacks using items I already have laying around the house. I don't think I'll ever have a coop as pretty as hers but it did inspire me with several things! The photography is fantastic. She also covers a great variety of topics!
How did I get so lucky??? I restrained myself and only tabbed eight pages the first read. These tabs will be my first chicken hacks. This book besotted me with the mirror in the chicken coop & ending with chicken tutus, (and of course, all the herbaceous wisdom)!!!!!!
Wow, I never realized there were so many hacks for keeping and care of chickens. This book really gives some great insight for the reader and some practical ideas for chicken tending. That's right, I said chicken tending, not chicken tenders. This is a must read for any chicken egg lover!
This book was like Martha Stewart on steroids. The author lost me at hand sewing tutus for her chickens. Is it so they can feel like turkeys? Fancy labeling & writing things inside the coop. Chickens can't read.
A fun, beautiful book with good ideas for chickens and your garden. I love the details on herbs, reusing old crappy tomato cages for good, storing eggs, and other projects.
This is a charming and useful resource for anyone keeping chickens. I love upcycling "junk" around the farmyard. I was surprised she didn't include the ever popular "bicycle tire" merry-go-round. Note that a lot of the medicine and first aid advice is herbal based in this book.

I've already shared many of my finds with my friends and neighbors that many are buying the book. That's one of the best references you can have.
