Hugh Thomson (1860 - 1920) was an Irish illustrator best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. Thomson inaugurated the Cranford School of illustration with the publication of the 1891 Macmillan reissue of Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford.

Beautiful illustrations made by famous artist Hugh Thomson to make what is wonderful (read Pride and Prejudice) even better.

More work here to clear my shelves of books I had purchased but not really read. This seemed charming at first glance, but wasn't particularly satisfying, as it was just quotes from the novel and illustrations that appeared many years ago. I supposed at the time they were originally published it may have been nice to see a depiction of the characters, although really Jane Austen characterization is so well done it is almost superfluous. But these days there are many film and TV adaptations that deliver us many opportunities to see as well as read, so this didn't hold my attention much. It is perhaps a bit more relevant as a historical document- how did a closer contemporary interpret her words, and what would a closer contemporary audience have enjoyed seeing in the novels.

This is a must have book for all those fans of Jane Austen and her most well-known and universally loved book `Pride & Prejudice' that will stay forever cherished in our hearts for hundreds of years to come. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) was commissioned in 1893 to illustrate Jane Austen's novel by Allen of London, with his somewhat humorous and most accurate drawings. The illustrations that are contained within this book are only a small selection of his work as an illustrator of books and magazines, during the time of Victorian England which was a career that spanned over forty years. This book contains sixty-five of the one hundred and sixty illustrations for Pride & Prejudice that clearly depict the moods and personalities of Jane Austen's characters, with great humor and affection. The illustrations compliment the novel beautifully bringing the written words in Jane Austen's book to life, taking you through from chapter one (when we first meet Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters) to the very end of the book (of the wedding couples happily married leaving Longbourne). This is an indispensable guide for all those readers who are new to Austen, that brings her creation to life with the most authentic images that make the story that much more realistic and believable. It is also a must have book for long-term Austen fans as an extra volume to complete your collection, that contains within it a piece of history within the old illustrations that would have adorned Austen's book as it was first published.

It is brilliant to have all of Hugh Thompson's famous illustrations in one book! Highly recommend this for any Jane Austen fan!
