Owner of the E.M. Ferguson Detective Agency, she prefers to live life outside of society’s norm – both in and out of the bedroom – which leads to complications when she finds herself attracted to her beautiful assistant, Julia Straton, and an arrogant, yet devastatingly handsome journalist named Walton Crew. But who has time for romance when there are murders to solve?
Her newest case is eerily similar to one from the past. Male brothel workers are being butchered, so she calls on old friends and Pinkerton detectives, Michael O’Leary and Stiles Long, to help track down the killer. Working together, the three friends race against the clock to prevent more blood from being shed, but when all is said and done, will the citizens of New York City accept Lizzie for who she is?
Lizzie just had a wonderful time with her close friends, Stiles Long and Michael O’Leary. Thanks to Lizzie, they just missed a close call with the Titanic.
Elizabeth Marie Ferguson, better known as Lizzie, has finally opened her own Detective Agency. This is a great accomplishment for a young woman, in 1912, New York City. To start her new endeavor, she’s had some low-key cases, that the police or other detectives wouldn’t touch. She hopes one day a more exciting case would come along. Lizzie also has hired an assistant, Julia Stratton, top of her class at Wellesley and five years younger than Lizzie.
Lizzie’s office is located in a building that house other occupants and she seems to have an impression of them. Two apartments upstairs and two businesses. An art studio owned by Laszlo Bertolli, looked to be in his forties and fit. August Accounting and Finance owned by Mylord August, snobbish, barely spoke and came from an affluential family and one other tenant that she hasn’t seen yet.
Then one day, Lizzie get’s lucky. Mrs. Abigale Strongworth enters the office. She’s concerned about her son, Adam. Adam was cut-off by his father and he left for the East Row where he became involved in a brothel. A New York Times Article by Walton Crew, told of the East Rows three deaths but none of them Adam. To gather more information, Lizzie finds herself heading to familiar territory, the Pinkerton Agency and Detective Martin Collins, the man in charge and once her lover.
Lizzie is ready to take on the complex case of missing Adam. It won’t be easy as she finds opposition with: Stiles, Michael, Collins and the irritating news reporter Walton Crew.
CJ Baty has outdone herself with the first spin-off novel from the “Pinkerton Man”. The author brings Elizabeth M. Ferguson aka Lizzie to the forefront. For those who followed the “Pinkerton Man” series will already be familiar with Lizzie. “Not Again” will be a more in-depth look into this brave and bold lady. The Den of Delights will have Lizzie entering a world that shows a dark side of male prostitution. It also reflects how much 1912 is really a man’s world and Lizzie will have to stand her ground and prove she is just as good as any man at being a detective. Even her former lover, Martin Collins, Walton Crew and the sweet assistant Julia Stratton will raise emotions for Lizzie. Will anyone capture her or will she stake a course for a life of her own.
Although, Stiles Long and Michael O’Leary aren’t the focus of the story, it’s always nice to have them in the picture and find out what’s new in their life. Lizzie will surely be in touch with them to consult or even if it is just to say hello to her two favorite men.
There’s many colorful characters that figure into this suspenseful mystery: Harris Gault - dead, Adam Strongworth, Nicky Copper, Laszlo Bertolli, Castel Insbury, Odell, Miss Rowan and Pixie.
“Not Again” was really impressive for the first book in the “E.M. Ferguson, Detective” series. The cover of this book really tells a story of Lizzie beginning her very own business in the struggling time for women in 1912. “Not Again” is a very entertaining thriller and I am excited to see what CJ Baty has planned next for Elizabeth Ferguson.
Lizzie is not your typical woman , she is the owner of E.M Ferguson detective agency and she has a new case which involves missing male brothel workers which is eerily similar to a past case. With the help of her friends and old owners of the detective agency . Michael O'Leary and his friend Niles Stiles all three will try and figure out what is happening in the brothel. The whole time trying to figure out her feelings for her pretty assistant Julia and what the people of New York will think of her. These are some really fun characters . Lizzie is a woman before her time , she is confidant and sassy but also very patient and sweet when it comes to those who she loves. She is a hard working woman with a heart of gold . Michael and Stiles seem like they are the comic relief that keep LIzzie on the right path when trying to solve the mystery. There are a lot of other characters that come and go with in the story that you will love . Julia is the sweetest character of the group she keeps Lizzie together and working hard but she is hiding a secret that might not let her work for Lizzie anymore. This is one of those novellas that will sweep you back into the past and see what was life like when you don't fit into normal society . The author takes us on an adventure while we are trying to solve the mystery, which is so much fun. We get to see the characters grow and become more complex as we read along. This has all the elements a mystery, great characters and some good ole romance thrown in for good measure . Check it ouf if you want a fun read for a rainy afternoon .
This is a delightful start to a spin-off series. An intelligent, independent woman opens her own detective agency in 1912-a time when men still ruled the world, and a woman being taken seriously or respected enough to make her own choices was not your daily standard. Lizzie seeks the truth in a case full of dark twists and truths, all the while exposing even darker parts of history that are buried. This novella is written in a way that feels like it matches the time period, and is wonderfully descriptive. I am very excited to see what Lizzie is up to on her next adventure.
If you like a good mystery novel with elements of, murder, a strong independent woman, and characters that are unique and quirky this is the book for you. This is the first book in the EM Ferguson Detective Agency a spin off of That Pinkerton Man. TThe story set in 1912 really gives an in depth look at how women were viewed. As a woman Lizzie should not have a business of her own in a time where women were viewed like property unable to take care of herself. The storyline is enticing and it is extremely well done. Character development is really a crucial part of why this story keep you guessing about who did what. I totally enjoyed the secondary characters who supported Lizzie in her work. The build up towards the end will keep you avidly turning pages. I enjoyed this book so much that I cannot wait to see what the next book will be like. The author really did an excellent job...a must read.
